    Micro-transactions aren't as popular here because they tend to give an advantage to people with more money.

    Most American gamers prefer games that emphasize skill and reward players for that, and would tend to be put off if you could simply buy an uber-item and win every time.

    This is simply, untrue. Almost every MMOG has resource monetization. While it's true players prefer not to link endgame content to real-world money, micro transactions are wildly popular and there is little stigma to "buying in" to an elevated gear/skill level.

    That's a straw man, because the reality is that they aren't. Even casting scumsucking middlemen (record labels etc) aside, you can't just make a song and have done.

    Calling it a strawman is either ignorance or simply stating fiction as fact. There are literally thousands of songs that have become popular in my lifetime without a single performance or record label. More through a single performance. Hamsterdance? Badger Badger Badger? Magical Trevor? Musical success is in the hands of the artists and listeners.

    In fact, a large number of CS majors apparently believe that everything can be implemented in a virtual machine and that both memory and [CPU] cycles are infinite.

    This is hyperbole and a misrepresentation at that. Students dont VALUE memory and cycles the same way because software is not about efficiency anymore, it's about development speed. We sacrificed the ability to make efficient code for development speed (VMs) and the only people who seem to be unhappy are the people who specialize in efficiency. When you start paying ridiculous amounts of money for embedded developers, you'll be surprised how many people will flock to it. Welcome to America.

    Wait a couple years. Never is not that far away.
    Unfortunately the organizations aren't very different.
    Government just fleeces the people due to our unique implementation of representative government where we are allowed to vote uninformed and disinterested.
    If America was founded on hiring the best and the brightest instead of "whoever doubts they can cut it at McDonald's" we wouldn't have gotten into many of our historical messes.

    Missed the nugget of truth lines with sarcasm did we? He knew exactly what he was saying. The tragedy of Christianity is how it's promoted and ultimately perverted. It's harder to fragment when you're private (or secretive). Ask the Scientologists. -1 for trolling.

    Poet? No.
    Salesperson? No.
    Empathy? Hell no.

    None of these are part of the job, although they are a part of being a human being.

    It's interesting to note that many people find that social norms are both inherently sancrosanct and intractable, when they are neither.

    *Denying non-emergency medical coverage is as deadly (although less dramatic, until a progressive condition has advanced) as denying emergency medical coverage. I make no distinction.

    I don't mind socialized medicine as long as it's only applied to those that HAVE paid into it. Social Security was and still is A BAD DEAL, with this fantasy future contribution mushroom. As for those who require care (of any kind) who have not paid into it, let them die. There is little remorse or apologies for someone who's foolish enough to run out into a freeway and gets killed, primarily because it's a social norm to EXPECT THAT. Once you have a social norm that predicts death when attempting to defraud our healthcare system, it will seem equally foolish; allowing us to maintain a scaleable healthcare system.

    Hillary has no real solutions anymore than Bush does. No independent thinking except to extend their own influence, wealth, and power.

    Why would anyone utter the term, anti-trust when talking about an MS/Yahoo merger. Neither come close to control of a market ANYWHERE. Combined, they equal nothing special.

    Perl scripts may not be portable because they use modules that are not installed everywhere. Shell scripts may not be portable because they use executables that are not installed everywhere.

    What kind of logic assumes that you can install Perl but are unable to execute a shell script? It's far more likely that you will have access to a shell and the basic commands in all cases. Making it a requirement to have root access (or permissions to install CPAN modules) to execute your script is dumb.

    If you find joy in anyone's death, you've got some serious problems.

    This is a subjective statement as humans are wired to be competitive and there is a mechanism for enjoying the end of struggle. The idea that everyone should be loving, caring, and nurturing is a "Politically Correct" AMERICAN ideal, not reality.

    A. This is not the "first time" the limit has been reached. The article is inaccurate.
    B. The reason it's a signed int is so that GMs/Developers can alter Gold amounts and either, not have to worry about setting or INTENTIONALLY set a player's Gold to a negative. If you have negative gold, you cannot gain any (gold effectively disappears, barring log analyzation). Simple logic there.

    Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean you should be happy they died.

    Should is a strong word, almost universally implying subjectivity. I believe it's normal to be happy when someone, you don't like, dies. It's a logical biological reaction.

    "Unique" in that most other games don't FORCE you to replay the newbie levels MULTIPLE TIMES just to level up to endgame.

    "Unique" in that most other games allow players to customize their class instead of having every single class/race combination be literally IDENTICAL.

    You obviously don't play WoW/GW and are trolling.

    FFXI is at most a footnote in the history of MMORPGs along with all the other EverQuest clones.

    That's Asheron's Call. FFXI is doing just fine. Many ppl who raid in WOW spend the off-raid time in FFXI as it's more flexible in the higher levels (mutable classes!). Unique in the high-end MMORPGs.

    Every major patch revision X.X.x has an economy adjustment. Your view of the economy is skewed. There's nothing special about the old high pop server economies with multiple ppl running around with multiple 70s and plenty of cash to burn. Gold buying is not even considered "cheating" (not in violation of the TOS or any rule), further inflating the pricing. Start/transfer to a NEWER, LOWER POPULATION server and all will be as you would expect.

    Gold selling is not considered "cheating" in WoW and many other games. Creating an economy means there will be things of value that people trade, eventually paying real-world money for. This is not a cheating issue. If the companies simply sold gold (as they should) it would destroy the gold market.
