The US wastes a ton of money on things that do not improve our readiness at defense. It's a huge waste but too few dare criticize it lest they appear unpatriotic. You could cut the budget by 1/3 and still spend more per capita on defense than most countries.
Putin came to power by engineering a war with Chechnya, Yeltsin seemed to basically step aside for him (maybe in return for promising to drop investigations). Everytime Putin does another invasion he gets a big surge in popularity. Right now the only difference between Putin in Russia today and the premieres in the Soviet era is that the Soviets at least had an ideology that they followed and you could quickly drop from favor if you appeared to not be ideologically correct.
Who's doing the disparaging? I don't think anyone gets free reins for that. I'm saying that as a white guy in a multicultural area, and I'm not seeing any blame, disparagement, racism, sexism, etc against myself. I am fully able to take advantage my privilege at any time.
My coworker has a new Windows phone. He likes it. If you don't need a million apps then it's not a bad product. The UI I think is pretty nice; what fails on the desktop works on the phone.
However, it's not dead because even the summary says there's a still Windows 10 phone. All that died was the previous version. That in itself should be the story, the Microsoft is accelerating the planned obsolescence in their rush to emulate Apple. But it's not dead. I know it's a Slashdot meme to declare things dead at the first sign of sniffles, but sheesh...
Haha, if you don't like the news then don't buy the National Enquirer! If you don't like the news then don't buy People magazine! It's too bad that bat boy isn't in the news anymore, none of the lamestream media ever bother covering bat boy.
But you have to say "not with the majority of the popular vote". That's because it makes Trump turn orange with anger. And when Trump turns orange with anger you get some very entertaining tweets at 3am. And entertaining tweets from the president at 3am keeps this economy running!
This particular CEO appears to have had a public drunken meltdown. Which certainly sends a very bad signal to the shareholder, leading to the offer to resign.
The reason for the rules very often arises from experience. The purely consensual no strings attached relationships do blow up and they do disrupt the workplace badly. When the don't blow up there is often accusations of nepotism or favoritism when the boss promotes the person in the sexual relationship than to the others in the group.
I've worked some places where some early relationships formed in the startup days (handful of people working in close quarters with zero free time to see anyone outside of work). Then you've got people in a relationship in relatively higher levels of power in the company. So I want to bitch about a persons behavior to my boss, except that they live together. It's hard to complain about that person to others in the company because they don't want to cause waves, and the whole thing is a minefield.
First, you seem to have a big chip on your shoulder. Do you honestly think that white guys have it worse in life than everyone else?
Second, it is never a good idea to attempt to date in the workplace, and most certainly never with someone you have a professional relationship with. Ie, maybe it's ok with someone from a different department in a different building and you never work with. but most certainly never with a manager or underling or anyone who gives or takes orders, never with a peer, or when there's a business relationship. Certainly, lots of people break these common sense rules, and sometimes magic just happens without it being planned. But someone looking to date in the workplace is almost always someone who's always on the prowl, actively trying to find out who's single, actively flirting to see who's interested, chatting up the new hires, and such a person is always labeled the company "creep".
In short - do not make your coworkers uncomfortable.
That's the snag. Rural residents are an important political and economic demographic, so it gets paid attention to. These aren't necessarily poor people. What's missing from broadband are the in-betweens. poorer sections of cities, small towns, regions dominated by minorities, etc. It's all about extracting money from consumers rather than connecting the citizens.
But the phone does only a tiny fraction of a what a computer does. Sure there are some addicts to smartphones, but they'll pay anything to get that next hit. The most a smartphone can do for me, other than being a phone, is let me see some email when I'm disconnected - but that's no big deal, life was bearable before then. Really, it does so very little that's useful that an old palm pilot didn't do.
I honestly can't imagine someone using the phone more than the computer unless they're addicted to social media or something, and even then a computer is better since the pictures are bigger and easier to see. Even when I read email on the phone I often still go and re-read it on the computer later where I can download attachments, follow links, use VPN, etc. Maybe the phone is good for twitter or instagram, but I'm not 13 so I wouldn't know.
While it's funny, imagine other scenarios with other leaders. People are always hanging on leader's words. Kim Jong Un always followed by generals holding notebook and pencil, ready to write down any words of wisdom. Turkmenistan, where the president for life (now dead) renamed all the months of the year. Imagine an absolute ruler a thousand years ago, maybe senile, maybe mad, everyone jumping at every word and taking it seriously.
Anyway, some perspective. No matter how crazy Trump seems, it's relatively mild.
This land was probably wetlands a few decades back, it's at sea level at the south end of the bay. Very close to the salt ponds. Drain the marsh, put garbage on top, put a golf course on top of that, then later try to put some major construction on top of it.
Note that the ampitheater on the landfill is not a corporate building. Ie, it's light, you don't have to worry about the ground subsiding, etc. The Google campus, previously Silicon Graphics, was at the edge of the landfill I believe, and not build on top of the landfill (I could be wrong).
I would be skeptical of multi-story residential/office on top of landfill.
I just saw the map in the paper today, and it's just a couple blocks from where I work and I walk past part of it. Right now it's mostly golf course.
The US could have been that way, but there was an active marketing/propaganda effort against trade unions and social institutions, which accelerated after the Russian revolution by linking it to communism. Despite so many decades having passed there is still a knee jerk reaction against the words "social" or "union". Certainly while growing up it wat he belief of many that trade unions were just a gateway drug to full blown takeover by the commies.
"Free market" means your cronies get to do what they want and are exempt from regulation. There really is no such thing as a fair free market free of oversight, there's always someone out there ready to abuse the system in some way (polluting the neighbor's property, restricting market access, etc). So the struggle is to get a government (or other measure of enforcement) that supports you and your friends, and maybe discouraging your competition as a bonus.

A single file makes it harder to use noscript also, as your choices are then to allow it all or allow nothing.

Yup, a good calculator by default would be great for Android.

Do we need Uber? It has plenty of competition ready to step up with better leadship and higher ethical standards.
So that's a woosh for the doosh.

A tech boss generally knows zilch about tech. Which is what is wrong with the entire venture capital system.
If you're not able to find time to flirt outside of work then maybe shorten your work hours. Don't they have weekends in your part of the country?

This land currently IS mostly a golf course! And a small BMX track, and some settling ponds, etc.

For that price, I want a keyboard with the control key in the correct location!
