the only way this software could be used illegally is to copy a dvd into another format (say divx) and send to a friend (or no friend for that matter).
No one would use this software to make dvd's of it - the resulting image wouldn't play on a dvd.
I think this is an important distinction.
More important, however, is that *at the time* there was no other way to play dvd's on linux boxes. Nothing in us law (that i'm aware of) says that the mpaa should have control of both the media *and* the players.
My guess (hope?) is this would have never come up if they had released a linux player.
Course an even bigger issue is that fact that never before has *code* been illegal - only the wrongful use of it. I'm sad to see this change...
Excellent suggestions but I think one thing needs to be said:
While it's true people may want to take your project in places you don't want to go, it's also possible they will want to take it in places you never thought of. My guess is there are *many* preojects that we use every day that do stuff the originator never thought of, wanted, or thought possible. Unfortunatly, I have no examples - it just seems right to me.
So, try and be open. It sounds corny, but synergy does happen and great stuff comes from it.
Actually I own/run an internet cafe/gaming center using gentoo linux. Not a spec of M$ code in the store (even removed IE from the one OS X box). I have *no* problem with people using windows, and only convert those who ask to be converted. By the same token, I expect M$ to keep their bloody hands off of Linux ands all the protocols that are required in a multi-os world (think how M$ tried to make everyone use IE by creating html only viewable using IE).
Again, the questin remains, who *wants* this tech (besides M$)?
Who besides M$ actually wants.net? Has anyone ever said "hey, I really want what.net is going to provide me?". Hell, how many people ubnderstand what.net is going to provide - somedays I'm not sure I understand.
I'm just getting tired of this 8 gazillion pound gorilla making all the decisions - most of which are not in my best interest (or rather, their customers - since I'm not a customer of theirs).
It does make me wonder what impact.net will have on non-windows users...
I have yet to read the article - however, these would be electric *motors*, not engines...
This is *exactly* how diesel locomotives work, except they have one motor per axles, rather than one per wheel (which means most loco's have 6 to 8 motors).
The advantage to this is that the motors can be smaller, cheaper, probably lower in center of gravity, maybe less weight (compared to one large electric motor and 2 or 4 wheel transmission),???.
Remember that electric motors have *way* more torque than gas engines - could be quite the "E" ticket.

Also, speaking as someone who does *not* code in Java, what do you mean by "Java already handles XML efficiently". Does this mean that the functionality provided by the XML perl modules is built into java?
Not that I'm thinking of chamging (I'm pretty pig-headed about this), but I am interested in why people pick java over perl...

All were excellent - Mark is always very prepared and knows more about the subject than anyone could ask. Also, and most important to someone of my perl ability (not very good), he usually makes the slides available after the class (via his server). This is exactly the problem - misinformation. There is a *huge* difference between these 2 types of ferrets - one can live in the wild - the other can't. If you buy your ferret from a reputible pet store then it will have been born in captivity (rather than a captured no. american ferret - which is illegal btw). These animals have *zero* ability to live on their own in the wild. They pose no danger to wild birds at all.
There is no such thing as a feral population of ferrets. No gov't agency has every documented one, and my guess is they never will.
All this misinfo comes from the cattle industry which would love to kill the native (and wild) black footed ferret. Aparently they dig hols which the cattle then break their legs in. Stupid cattle.
Cats, however. Check out audobons (sp?) web site - cat's kill a ton of wild birds every year. they're the real danger to wildlife - not ferrets.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled broadcast...
I'd have to disagree with this completly - I had a ferret for 5 years. While they do haave a slight musk odor, it's very manageble. The trick to so bath their bedding often, but the ferret not at all. Bathing the ferret causes the production of the oil that gives off the musk scent (food can affect this too). There are many books on ferrets that go into more detail.
My ferret was the most playful, enjoyable pet I ever had. They sleep most of the time, but shen they're awake, they do nothing but play. Hide and seek was Rascal's favorite game - she would hide behind the refridgerator - and then poke her head out. When you would say "boo", she'd scamper back. It was more fun that it sounds (they have a very funny lope - they run with their back arched)
Ferrets are very communal - best to have 2 or more. They also will develop a specific sleep schedule based on when you are available to play (less so if there are 2 or more) - so it's nice if you can devote the same time of each day to play with them. They sleep darn near 20 hours/day.
Ferret's can be house trained just like cats(but read up on the best types of litter to use).
I'd have a ferret now if the morons in the Ca. senate didn't have their heads up their ass - they can't tell the diff between the european ferret (domesticated for about 2000 years) and the wild ferrets of No. America.
There's been many studies of this nature - one in a room as stated above. Another study was done in a cave *way* deep in the earth. When they (this time it was a group) came back up (about a month later), they thought x days had passed, when in fact it had been x+ a couple days...
Both studies seemed to suggest the natural humnan biorythm (sp?) was over 24 hours...

" You just seem to be bitter because, apparently, you don't grasp the elegance of object oriented programming, especially in Java, and still cling to a clooge of a language called Perl."
Yes, it's clooge - that will change in perl 6. Amd yes. OO is cool, but perl 5 is perfectly capable of doing it - and 6 will be better.
"Let me see you design one good GUI based application with Perl, and see how well it runs on Windows/Linux/Solaris."
What are *you* smoking - remember we are talking about web based apps? Which all run on Windows/Linux/Solaris/Mac/Beos/etc... This is where perl *really* shines. From data manipulation, data access, html generation - perl does all these well *and* easily (thanks to thousand of wonderful modules).
"Perl faster than Java? Stop smoking whatever it is your smoking. Or while your still high go convince the financial industry to abandon Java and move to Perl..."
Thanks to those aformentioned modules, perl is *many* times faster than java to code. And, if the code is then precompiled (ala mod_perl) into apache, it runs *at least* twice as fast as java. Sorry, no data on hand, but it's out there (I've seen it) - I leave this as an excercise for the viewer.
I can't comment on the financial industry since I have no experince with it - but I *do* have experince with web apps - and perl kicks butt (along with PHP).
I agree with this 100%. However (there's always a however, right), any company with shareholders is legal responsible to maximize prfit - right? I hope I'm wrong about this - anyone know?
I also agree that apple is doing the right thing by bringing out updates when thay can, rather than when the market says so. I'm very much looking forward to 10.2.
Any ideas how much/if an upgrade from 10.1 will cost?

I think you missed the point of my original post - which is that both the client and server *supposedly* require a windows install - but, like all the loki games, maybe this can be worked around... (not work around needing the windows cd, just the windows install)
I never said buy the game now you dolt - wait until the linux port is released - that's fine. But buy the game - don't steal/copy it - that's my point.
You sound usire bioware is going to release the linux client - I'm not that cynical yet...
My guess is the number of folks who want to set up a server without actually playing the game is... well...nill. Buy the game - support bioware for porting to linux.
Um, I think if you re-read my post - you'll see I've said nothing about having to have the cd *in the computer* while playing - only that one needs to have the windows cd in order to have a linux server/client. I in no way want Bioware's experiment with linux to leave a bad taste in their mouth - which means we pay for the game just like the windows server/clients...
Okay, per Bioware's site - the first step is to install NN into windows (to create some files that will be copied to the linux partition). I think this is similar to what Loki did in the past - create a linux binary of the game (or in this case, the server), then write an installer to get the game files from the cd (cause they are packed up somehow). The question is: will bioware allow us to write an installer for linux that avoids having to install into windows and copy files over.
The windows cd would still be required (as it should be) - I'm not trying to circumvent that at all - I just wonmder what's involved in unpacking the files from cd and "installing" (copying) to disk...
I only ask because I don't have windows installed anywhere in my home or business.
