Emerging the gentoo-sources package will bring down a laundry list of kernel patches such as the pre-empt and latency packages and all sorts of fun stuff. The only snag there is that my laptop was done with XFS as it's sole filesystem, and pre-empt and XFS don't play well, at all.
This comes as a surprise to me as the latest gentoo install I did uses both the pre-empta and xfs. It's only been 4 days, but no problem so far (in fact, I'm *very* happy with my decision to switch from ext3 to xfs). Where does this info about pre-empt and xfs come from?
This isn't really news because the only change between Gentoo 1.1a and 1.2 is that the make.conf file points to the round-robin dns for downloads of the portage in 1.2. *Any* version of gentoo has support for kde 3 because of the ability to "emerge -u kde" when kde3 is released (regardless of what version of gentoo you're using) and *any* version of gentoo can use the round-robin dns by changing just one line in the make.conf file.
It's a very different way of looking at things compared to other distros which use binaries (which means that new releases add new features).
However, in spite of this, Gentoo 1.3 *will* be worth announcing because it will mark the moment when one can easly build a system using gcc3.1 exclusivly (1.3 is in testing now and works for many people).

However, the day after, you decide to 'emerge unmerge libxyz' (remove libxyz for Gentoo virigins). abc no longer works properly. Gentoo didn't tell you that abc needed libxyz, because it's not a dependecy.
This is very true, and there is an effort to resolve this. The rumor is that version 2.0 of the portage system wil have reverse dependency linking, so when I upgrade libxyz, gentoo knows what packages where compiled against it and will recompile those.
Should make upgrading gentoo a bit easier and safer.
I second this - bzflag is a great game. Perfect for kids from about 10 up to 35!
As I read the ask slashdot, I had a couple kids in my computer game/internet cafe (all linux) playing bzflag and having a great time. It's easy to learn, but hard to master.
BZFlag has some of the best playability of any game I've played. Great balance between flags and excellent homemade maps. Deserves to be up there with CS, Quake3, and UT.
While it's tru that it can be a bad thing, RtCW runs excellent (as native in Linux). Actually, I disagree with the person you replied to - I see nothing that says the patches and bug fixes are any different between windows and linux.
That said, RtCW native on Linux rocks! I'm interested in seeing the changes that v1.32 brings (I saw something about dowsnloading maps within the client).
First of all, I remeber the berlin screenshots from a couple years ago - they've made great progress.
Then I looked at directfd - damn! Screens look great! It appears that gnome and blackbox run on directfb. I like the network aspects of X11 (even if I only use it once ina while) but I wouldn't mind seeing more speed... I'm going to download and play with this.
Wait, wait, wait. Nobody said anything about copying cd's - just playing them. There are plenty of legit reasons why somone would want to play a music cd on their computer. Maybe it's not a legal right as I wrote above (wishfull thinking on my part), but it's a use of cd's we can (and should) defend.
As much as I would like to think this AC is wrong, I suspect they're right.:(
Now, I *still* think that a boycott is in order (along with supporting independent artists). Even if we have no *legal* right to play music cd's on our computers (and dvd's on our linux box), we can certainly assert our desire to do so - by only support companies that allow us to do these things.
Regardless if these cd's casue damage or not, this has to stop. We have a legal right to play these cd's (and dvd's - remember we aren't supposed to be able to watch them in linux) on any system we want. Period. The only way to get through to the music and movie industry (besides a lawsuit) is to boycott them. Don't buy new cd's or dvd's.
"But I want my music (and video)" you say. Same here, so I suggest *only* buying used cd's and dvd's. That as good as a boycott. And, so far, it's still legal (the selling and buying of used cd's and dvd's. Even if it wasn't, I would fight to the death my right to sell my old cd's and dvd's.
I wonder what a sentient web browser would be like...
maybe it would automatically filter out all microsoft news (cause it just depresses me). And, it only show's the oakland A's score when they are ahead.:)
Back to the original thread, I just switched to gealon yesterday and am *very* impressed at its built in ad filtering options:
1) don't animate gifs
2) only animate once
3) don't show images not hosted on server (the option I use) - very nice!
I'm very impressed by this image (http://desktopian.org/e17/screenshots/e17-theme2. jpg)- remonds me of what I liked about irix, but it's tons prettier.
I've been missing the old, active, vibrant themes.org since it was hacked (last summer?). This is fantastic news. Can't wait for all the themes and wallpaper goodness to come!
Actually, I was dealing with some strange problems. listing nv as the chipset casused X to lock the computer hard (before *and* after installing the nvidia drivers). I assume this has something to do with the nforce board I'm using???
Also, the nvidia drivers that come with gentoo 1.0 have the incorect kernel headers, but 1.1a seems to have this fixed (I'm just finishing setting up X for 1.1a)
The problem I had with sorcerer wasn;t kde, it was incorrect/old url's in the grimoire, even though it was the latest version. I would imagine it takes quite a bit of effort to keep up with new and dissapearing ftp servers
I installed gentoo on one of my boxes a couple of days ago - here is my impression:
Speed, speed, speed 0 just like the author stated
the docs are excellent - I spent a half day figureing out how to st up the nvidia drivers and x, just becasue I didn't read the docs. I finally read the desktop guide, and it had everything I needed.
Maturity - I've also installed sorcerer (the latest release) and while I like it I think gentoio is more mature. No glitches during the install - sorcerer has some kde hangups. No slight to sorcerer, I just think gentoo has had more time to work out the bugs
What about a *VERY POLITE* email campaign to the company (if Tilly will tell us who it is) explaining the importance of the code to the perl community and our displeasure with their actions (I've used carp many time - it rocks!). My first reaction is concern this would lead to him being fired, but on reflection, it seems to me that only an idiot would fire someone because of an email campaign - right?
This is a troll, right? Perl runs faster than java almost *all* the time (common knowledge), and development in in perl is *much* faster then c and c++ (also common knowledge).

You don't ever have to read Katz - it's called the back button. Use it. Shut up.
This would be quite a trick as I think DeForest Kelley passed away a few years ago. Still, it would have been cool. He was/is my favorite above all the star trek characters with Voyagers doctor following a close second. Something about a mix of compassion, stubborness, and (in Bones case) humor works for me.
I've been reading a book called "The Nothing That Is - A Natural History of Zero" by Robert Kaplan. Probably goes into much more detail than you want about who invented/re-invented the zero, but it's an amazingly enjoyable read.
I think it's important at this point to thank Bero for posting all these replies to slashdot. There's nothing better than getting the viewpoint of someone from the company directly - I rarely ever see this.
Thanks!

No, Saint Foo is okay! :)
I *don't* read kernel.org, but enjoy being reminded once in the while about what's happening in kernel dev, so STFU!
