Noah: Not that it’s any of your business, but I plan to teach. Archer: Anthropology. Noah: What? Yes! Rip: To, uh, anthropology majors? Archer: Thus continuing the circle of “Why bother?”
First: This wouldn't be a war like Afghanistan or Iraq, because the US would most likely only be concerned with destroying the Iranian military and forcing them out of the strait of Hormuz. This would be largely an air war, and the US would likely suffer very few casualties as a result. We could destroy their navy, inflict massive military casualties, and cripple their ability to project force into the strait without more than a few boots on the ground, and most likely this is how it would go.
Second: None of that matters, because Iran does not gain from a war with the US. It would be an absolute disaster for their people and it would likely force their government out of power. The reason that they're doing this is because Ahmadinejad needs a scapegoat in order to keep his popularity up, and calling out the US and Israel at every opportunity is a lot easier than dealing with real issues. Hes been doing it for years, the only reason hes making more noise now is because his popularity is dwindling.
That isn't necessarily true. As with most things, the situation dictates, but there are certainly a lot of situations where you want the enemy dead rather than wounded. Most situations in fact.
It seems like the sort of thing that ought to tear him away from the manbearpig hunt, considering that this is guaranteed to cause observable climate change.
Seriously? Look at the posts above you. The clear majority are blatantly bashing the US, just like every single topic that has anything to do with politics on slashdot.
Hell, Iran is better liked on slashdot than the US.
What on earth are you basing that on? Why would people move back into the crime ridden middle when there are vast, much nicer suburbs. I think a far more likely outcome is that the suburban populations will gravitate to new population centers within the suburbs, assuming the population crash that you seem to be expecting.
... Then criminals would be able to do whatever they wanted all the time. You know, the reason that every society on earth going back to Ur has had a justice system?
A good defense attorney might argue that the very fact that the coffee wasn't very good lead to jurors not drinking it, and thusly not paying close attention during the trial.
Hopefully this guy still gets the death penalty if hes found guilty. It really does look like he murdered a 17 year old over the money in the kids pocket.
My favorite theory from the 6 minutes of Wikipedia-based research that I just conducted is the idea that intelligent life tends to be very short lived.
It makes a lot of sense if you think about it, chances are that at some point in the future the world will be taken over by religious zealots who don't like technology, or made uninhabitable by nuclear war, or compressed to a singularity by accident, or turned into gray goo by tiny replicating bending robots.
Maybe the reason that we don't see any signs of alien life is because, well, we're fucked!
The whole point of the Fermi paradox is that if the earth isn't special, then where the hell is the evidence of alien life? All these posts explaining how we aren't special, and how "life will find a way", just lead right back to it. Why haven't we found so much as a single piece of evidence of any kind?
Ah, wait, I just flipped over to the history channel. Apparently aliens were responsible for the destruction of Pompeii. Never-mind, proof found.
Except the chances of our exact situation are probably a lot worse than one in a million. Pulling numbers out of my ass, I'd say its more like one in 200 Billion.
I know, I know, we all hate Bush. I get it. But the fact is that he won in 2000 because of the electoral college system, not because of any sort of fraud.
I'm sorry, but you're just wrong. The middle class by and large got where they are through hard work, and the last thing they need is to be driven into poverty by terribly thought out "robin hood" campaigns.
The wealth disparity isn't between the middle class and the poor, its between the rich and everyone else. Stealing from the middle class just creates new poor.
We're taking it back!
And just like "Porch Monkeys", the idea that someone would be so attached to using "Hacker" as a positive is hilariously absurd.
Yep, that's what we're up to. It makes perfect sense. No falsifiability or critical thinking failures there, no sir.

Yea, you take that anonymous coward obviously telling a joke! Get your facts straight or get the fuck out!
And once survival becomes too easy, evolution simply rewards whoever breeds the most.

I know I'll probably get modded -1 for pointing this out, but you're a fucking moron.
Sony doesn't hate gamers, they just have absolutely no respect for them.
Those who actively harm others. Its pretty simple really.

Ahh, modded down by the usual slashdot sycophants. Anything pro-US, anti-socialist, or anti limousine-liberal is modded down as low as it will go.
Is Al Gore up in arms over this?

You missed my last sentence, the history channel figured it out.
Also ghosts.

I wish I had mod points, this is a great response.
