  10. What free package is that? I would like to know because I had to build my own inventory and warehouse management software to integrate with my RFID tracking. I like Linux and I do use Linux in my facility almost 100% (Doing a lot of stuff on my own and also hiring people to build things for me), but come on now, you know there isn't anything good on Linux that's free to do all that stuff without custom building your own software.

That's where Quickbooks has quite an advantage where setting up even a medium size business is quite possible with it in a short amount of time. A lot banking has no problem integrating with Quickbooks and a lot of high priced inventory software integrates very well with Quickbooks. Even EDI is a cake walk in Quickbooks. Finding people to work with Quickbooks isn't a problem without having to go through some rigorous training with them and hope they get it over time (Training costs money and I find a lot of financial people able to use Quickbooks within a day). While on Linux, you need to custom roll your own design and hope that your vendor will also provide you ways to integrate with your Linux software. And then comes the training of new employees all the time to use your system (Ultimately it's a better solution overall if you want more customization and integration, for say machines).

Pretty much I started off on Quickbooks and eventually moved completely to my own custom rolled Linux system, but it took a while (With some pitfalls here and there), but without Quickbooks, I would still be stuck wasting my time trying to think of an accounting and inventory system when I started up. Granted Intuit is now shit with its recent releases, but it served me well for a couple years.

Especially in the manufacturing world where a lot of machines are running some version of Windows for their HMI, and a lot of them had the Windows 10 upgrade popup (Bypassing every little trick to prevent from going to desktop) and a lot of operators clicked yes on it. It's pretty neat seeing multimillion dollar machines go down left and right. The last one I've seen go down was a Makino CNC machine at a machine shop. The best one was a multi million dollar bottling line go down.

There has been a lot of downtime because of this and that's a lot of money.

  16. It's definitely hitting Steam a lot when a lot of triple A titles are no longer selling on Steam. Just look at what's selling now on the front page of Steam. 50% of the titles there is pure crap. Facebook has the infrastructure to distribute their own games and making a distribution content system is just a drop in the bucket for them.

Basically the whole gaming industry is turning into this fractured system where I have to now have multiple content distribution software to play these games and now game developers and publishers have to support multiple content distribution systems to get their games out there. All because every company wants to control their own content and how it's distributed to cash in on this money train. People so far are putting up with it. Even Uplay of all things.

Nothing to do with socialism, just better thought out regulations and jurisdictions that work together, that doesn't require major bureaucratic work, lobbying and buying out corrupt government officials to do such work.

Just google trenching permits in many cities in the US and see the elaborate details it entails in the US. If you're crossing multiple jurisdictions and private property, all that requires different permits and more restrictions apply (And A LOT OF FREAKING DRIVING). None of the requirements are harmonized, they're all different. And then you have OSHA on top of this making sure you follow all the rules. All this drives the costs up because now you need a legal adviser(s) to help you.

Many US regulations and jurisdictional requirements are very cost prohibitive because of badly thought out regulations and jurisdictions that refuse to work together on issues like this.

  22. Re:This disaster is entirely of your own making on The Chip Card Transition In the US Has Been a Disaster (qz.com) · · Score: 2

This is reminiscent of the US industry in general. Everything is half-assed here. A lot of my suppliers in the US that I vet are half-assed that I have to dump them. I go through a lot of resumes for managers and engineering positions, all their stuff on linkdin is about saving me money and how they saved "X" company money. I asked them how they did it, of course they can never tell me (Obvious cost cutting procedures). Even contractors, I had to go through a full year of them before I found one that wasn't cutting corners and was doing things the right way. Even the building that they were building for me, if I didn't bitch, it would have been half-assed.

I follow standards and I don't pick and choose what I like. A lot of companies in the US pick and choose standards they like and they also pick and choose every paragraph that they like in such standards while ignoring the rest. If it costs them too much money, it's not going to be done. This is why, unfortunately, the majority of my vetted suppliers are in Europe. I even tried to help one, giving them a full report on how to fix things, procedure wise and safety wise (They have accidents there every week, I guess they don't mind settling in courts every 50k). They just gawked at the price tag even though being one of my suppliers would have easily covered all the costs while benefiting them in the long term. Most manufacturers in the US operate old broken machines with illegals running them. Management and owners here in the US are sick.

So, the chip and pin disaster is no surprise to me. I already see how a lot of stores are completely failing procedure wise and I already see that a lot of companies do not want to spend the money on better equipment or do anything about it. Everything is short term. They don't see any long term benefits, I actually think they're incapable of seeing anything in the long term.
