You can buy a Panasonic Toughbook, that's about it.
Chances are, any new laptop you buy, is most likely at least produced in China. Even Clevo, a Taiwanese company, produces its laptops in China. Just buy another Thinkpad, they're still great and Lenevo has a better record than all the other laptop producers in terms of labor and pollution.
The sad part is that many of us know it's all bullshit, it's just that no one is willing to stand up for what is right anymore. If you do, you get tasered or shot to death, while a group of people around you just watch in shock and horror, then go home and forget about you.
"Oh, for you idiot teenagers with mod points today that will be modding me down as flamebait or a troll. Kiss my ass. You'll have kids one day. Your entire attitude will change.
Note to dad: Uhm, you remember when I was a teenager and was a complete asshole. I'm sorry about that. You were right."
Yes, we kids learned, we learned that the system is terrible. Would you send your kids to a prison camp, knowing you came out of one and how it is? No, I don't think so, unless you really don't give a damn about them. My father actually listened to me when I was a teenager and believed me, sent me to private school, then home schooled and regrets having sent me to public school when I was younger. My kids won't be going to public school and nor will I encourage them too. Maybe your child even mentioned it and you refused to listen as many parents do and called them an asshole instead?
So yes, my attitude changed alright, I am 100% against these policies, and any encouragement for public school systems. They destroy lives and family with their indoctrination. I am a full fledged libertarian and will find other means to educate my children because the state doesn't provide any encouraging benefits at all but decreases my children's chances for a good or better life. I've met so many home schooled children and private school children that have excellent relationships with their parents (myself included), doing excellent academically and well off in life, unlike those from public schools. No one will decide what is better for my children, and that includes store managers.
Perhaps it was different in your time, but this is how it is now. I am glad this manager got suspended, and most likely fired. I am all for encouraging privacy and that manager crossed the privacy line and had no business whatsoever to do it. If my kid wanted to buy something, by all means. Let me deal with it myself at home. All I see this encouraging is more socialism, which I want less of (Coming from a European), showing children they have no rights as a human being until they're 18.
"While Linux is not designed to destroy a computer, one can't expect every manufacturer to be aware of every flavor of linux or to know if it has the proper drivers and regulations. Someone who runs gentoo is exactly the kind of tweaker who might just try to disable thermal performance limiters."
As opposed to someone who overclocks their hardware in Windows? I fail to see the relevance in this case. Plenty of people running Gentoo just fine without tweaking anything on the hardware side.
I just got a Thinkpad T61p a few days ago. It came loaded with Vista Basic unfortunately, but it was the cheapest option and Lenovo gave me a $40 discount (Call them, the customer service guys are pretty friendly, at least for me) on that as well since I was going to uninstall it. Lenovo doesn't sell the new laptops with linux installed, they do with the T60's, but not the 61's yet, but supposedly they will in the future.
So the day I got it, I played around with Vista for a couple hours, then wiped everything, installed XP and Slackware, dual booting, and was forever happy and impressed by this laptop. Vista really does makes this beautiful laptop freaking ugly.
The amount of players maybe smaller than console players, but the PC game market is one expensive niche with some far more excellent games than what consoles games can spit out. It's like people buying sports cars, not everyone is driving one, but those that do spend a lot of money for them and do enjoy it.
Face it, without us PC gamers demanding more from our hardware and games, the PS3 and Xbox wouldn't exist right now, accelerated graphics would just be a dream and we'd be stuck with underpowered machines. And hell, recently the price dropped more than enough (vs. the PS3 and Xbox) to have an excellent PC to play most of the recent games and any later released games for a while. There are great PC games which will not be on the console ever.
And now with ATI opening up their specs, it might interest the PC game market to open up some more to create games for other OS's like linux and OSX, which has been long past overdue.
I stopped using torrentspy.com when they put up all those annoying ads on it. Their search has been pretty lame lately. Mininova, piratebay and a host of others offer a lot more. So good riddance, good bye Torrentspy.com. I hope you lose a lot of money from the lost ad revenue from US internet users.
And that's all that is required for me. Why can't people understand that? If you're not providing what you advertised, then you are outright basing your service with lies. The advertisment is a TOS agreement and topples any TOS hidden on the company website, at least here in America.
Don't try to sell me oranges you don't have and then try to back out of the deal after I eat a few of them on the grounds that I'm hungrier than the average customer and/or then whoop out a hidden TOS agreement.
Either you can provide the service as advertised or you can't, which is it? Time to fess up so we know not to ever consider your service again. Oh and all those apologists complaing about how much this would cost and defending Comcast for this sleasy business practice: Fuck you.

The iPhone was an overprice piece of junk in the first place.
