Pretty much what's happening in a lot of places. Pretty much why every IT person that visits once a year just hands everyone Windows 10. There is a huge lack of IT personnel at these places to handle most things, so the easiest thing to do is to give it all to the cloud. Because who cares? The client doesn't seem to care as long as they don't have to hire IT people, because they see it as a waste of resources. That is, until they have a data breach, then they blame everyone but themselves.

They sell DIN rail mounted network switches with firewalls now. Most of them the size of the typical DIN rail mounted network switches. They will not spend the extra $600 to secure their internal stuff, even when the machine costs millions of dollars and they're getting great returns for selling it.

Many reasons. With the advent of more use with Ethernet/IP and Modbus/TCP, LAN communication is more convenient and much easier to control. Even I use it for my equipment and all the various software I made to communicate with said equipment. Of course I care about security and have this entire network isolated and separated. I don't trust any device manufacturer. Even my ABB speed drives for some reason want to talk an send data to the Internet, wtf ABB? Blocked

Then comes the support. Many manufacturers or builders of these control panels give themselves remote access to these panel. They always request internet access if you want technical support. Of course none of these people give a crap about security on both sides, the person buying the equipment and the manufacturers providing the equipment. And this isn't chump change here, we're talking about equipment ranging from 100K to millions.

You would be surprised how many power stations, manufacturing places, etc I've been at that have full access from the internet (wide open ports) to teamviewer installed on all their HMIs with the key and password fully visible if you walk by the station.

I always get moron naysayers that this is not true when we have a public case of it right here.

Good luck trying that with Java. None of these big developers for this software have any intention of improving the situation either. I still see even NEW ERP software using and requiring 1.7. This sector of the industry doesn't care, nor do they care about security much either, aka stuxnet.

You have 2 already. Amazon is playing this game because the government keeps them dependent and most likely their workers don't want higher wages or they lose their government benefits (Which can amount to thousands of dollars extra).

Amazon gets to lower their labor costs while the tax payer foots the bill for the rest of the stuff. This doesn't give you the best worker, but for a warehouse job, it works, and the bean counters get excited.

Overall, I don't like it because it encourages people to remain in this status quo and not improve themselves for better prospects. I'd rather have a selection of higher tier workers than 99% crap that this industry encourages. Just finding a good forklift driver that doesn't destroy your truck in the first week is becoming a headache.

You have a careless management you end up with careless workers too, that affects everyone in the industry, not just you.

This advertisement has been going on for years. This was the impression people got from those video demonstrations and this is why a lot of people wanted one. Now they're telling us that we should always keep our hands on the wheel and blame the drivers for accidents for not doing so.

It's not like they haven't posted videos before it on youtube. We have them showing a Tesla dropping off the driver in front of work and finding its own parking spot (Removed from Tesla's own channel), we have videos of them driving the car fully autonomous on wild roads. They've been promising these auto driving features in updates with tons of people waiting anxiously. Now since the criticism and accidents, they've clamped down on it and they've been removing any videos that advertised "Fully autonomous vehicle", but you can still find the reposts of them.

Now the only videos of their vehicle advertisement they have on their channel is just basically showing off a regular sedan basically with road/lane assistance. They took down all their videos of the car driving without a driver.
