Thousands of science stories published in a wide variety of media are faithful to the research, yet still interesting and topical. Still, one of the hardest things about science journalism is convincing the scientists you want to interview that you'll report accurately on their work.

And then some jackass like this comes along and pees in the pool. I hope he was fired, at least.

I'm not sure where things stand now, but originally "goodwill" in an accounting context was anything but a fictitious asset. If I were to buy a business called "Dave and Sons Whatevers" that had been providing great service to the local community for 30 years, I'd pay extra to keep the name and the good will of the community that went with it.

Not everybody is going to know that Dave and his kids have retired, so they'll keep coming back, expecting the same high level of service they've been getting. Even those that do know the facts also know Dave would have a huge sign in his window saying "We're out of here" and sure as hell wouldn't allow his name to stay on the store if the new owners were crooks or idiots. If I started a new Whatevers business, even in the same building, just as D & S is shutting down, I'm going to have to prove myself to a skeptical community. Even if I do pretty well, there's going to be stories going around about how much better things were back in the days of Dave & Sons.

So I fork out extra bucks for the direct or implied blessing of Dave and the boys. By accepting the extra money, they're in effect saying, "This guy's OK. You can keep coming to our old shop and he'll take good care of you.

That's "Goodwill", and it's definitely worth some bucks.

I guess you didn't notice when Burma shut down the whole cell phone network to stop pictures and video from getting out. As soon as the Western press wasn't getting spoon-fed a lot of free content, it dropped the story like a hot potato and the Burmese government happily went back to slaughtering monks.

P2P doesn't exist in a vaccuum. And because it's so pervasive, controlling copyright means significant intrusion of the state into peoples' lives in one way or another. If you want to go up against armed thugs waving a dead cell phone around and telling them, "If you kill me, I'll take pictures", you go right ahead.

Did you even read what I wrote? I said nothing about whether or not the Russians were good. I said they would cut corners. Cutting corners is what you do to save money, and the Russians are famous for it. They did it early on in the space program, and the only reason you didn't see how many of their projects screwed up is that they weren't exactly forthcoming about their failures. And FYI, they didn't send any "rovers" to Venus. Landers. Not rovers. There's a difference, and not an insignificant one.

The chance that they'll spend the extra millions of dollars to ensure the sterility of a Europa lander is non-existent.
