I have a beef with most of those PC fanboy sites because they immerse themselves in a very incomplete survey of computing. Hardware is just one component. They have little expertise in software, preferring to use it only for benchmarking hardware. Their lack of software expertise leaves them with poor rationalizations of the capabilities of their hardware!
In 2003, if they aren't experts in Linux, they aren't experts in computing.
It is an excellent way for the thumbheads at M$ to get at that $40billion hoard of cash, turn it into tax-free cash in their own bank.
Being that there will be a huge payout in stock options for those M$ employees who will be retiring soon undet their ESOP Ponzi Scheme, if Gates and friends gets the cash out NOW, then it won't matter so much that the stock price gets diluted to nothing when the retirements hit.
Being able to turn off html is the clincher for me with Kmail. Have been using it for years now and have abused it with more than 2,000 messages in my inbox.
Disclaimer: I do not presume that Master Bait is apathetic or politically disengaged. How would I know? I only note that I have heard this song many times from people who are apparently much more interested in complaining about the system than changing it.
Idealism noted, but my comment was a plea for the EFF to engage in EFFective uses of their time and money. Hopefully, somebody there will take note and try something out of the box, because the old ways are getting us nowhere fast.
Sad to say, this EFF ad campaign is weak in comparison to what potential they COULD have. What's worked for right-wing groups such as the Christian Coalition and the NRA is to target a marginally-held Congressional seat of one of their opposers. They pour money and 'grass-roots' footwork and work to defeat their opponent.
EFF should be putting in efforts to target one of the RIAA's lapdogs which is running against someone who supports the EFF's efforts. Just one Congress-critter being defeated with the efforts of the EFF would cause many, many more members of Congress to do more of the EFF's bidding. And that's what we want.
Letter writing campaigns like the EFF proposes right now is wasted baggage. Congress critters don't c are about letters, they care about getting reelected.
It's not a great deal, it's a lousy deal. For that kind of money, they could have bought Corel outright and would have OWNED everything outright AND have a lot left over to commission many many more video games for kiddies. Now they won't own anything but a limited-time, non-transferrable lease.
The whole US government is such a huge consumer of software, that they could save a tremendous amount of money by contracting with public universities to maintain their own Linux or BSD distro.
There. I've said it. Kudos to the person who invented the term. Reading yesterday's Slashdot postings, one can get the picture of what it would feel like if the new Macs actually were the "Fastest Desktops in the World".
I agree. Linux makes more headway in the office, government and schools, while Mac is in the studio and the home. The only place I think OSX loses to Linux is in the school.
I think surveys of the number of Linux Desktops in use are bulls**t. Nobody knows. Nobody takes a realtime census of desktop useage. All they can go on are number of preinstalls, and unscientific surveys of browser hits on a small number of websites. Utter, spindoctor bulls**t.
I feel the opposite, and am jumping for joy over Trolltech's release of QT/Free for the Mac. Out goes Finder to be replaced with Konqueror. Byebye Mail.app, hello Kmail. I already can't stand Dreamweaver, so it would be nice to run Quanta locally instead of over the net on X11 on the Mac.
as in the columns view? where you can preview nearly any file??
Where you can surf web, see images/movies full resolution, view text or other files full-size, have itunes display itself in the finder instead of launching itself as a separate app. The underlying capability in OSX is already there, I think (or is only on cocoa apps?). If not, then I might as well be switching to Konqueror as my Finder under OSX!
3) I don't see the Safari driven finder either. It's just the normal finder window with a brushed metallic look. (I still haven't made up my mind on the metallic. I don't hate it, but it's not lickable like the rest of the OS)
Apple seriously needs a new Finder. I hope the new one can be used as an all-purpose viewport like all the other modern operating environments do.
Which wouldn't have been playable on any of the current players.
Which made very good sense when the industry moved from LPs to CDs, and moved from 45rpm to 33rpm and moved from 78rpm to 45rpm. Each represents a leap forward in quality and/or capability. And you CAN tell the difference between 5.1 dolby and stereo.
But these days, the difference between MP3 and store bought CDs isn't all that great. Certainly, MP3s make FM radio moot.
I thought I already saw this.
True. It is a shame the article failed to plot a corresponding reassertion of genius a few years later in bad marriages.
Isn't that as simple as making a soundfile attachment?

I doubt that, but turnabout is fair play.

Or, how about one Sonnet 800mhz upgrade, and one year's vacation at a beach in Belize.
Upgrade $267
Vacation $12366
I noticed that Amazon is taking orders for Mac OS X Panther Unleashed, Third Edition (undiscounted).

So, I take it that you swallowed the blue pill and woke up not remembering a thing?
