Don't you know you need to buy new hardware every time you upgrade, even if what you have is still perfectly functional /sarcasm.

I have a film scanner I bought well over 10 years ago and initially used it on a Win 98 box when that was still supported. It will scan in 35mm and medium format film at 19,200 vertical dpi X 19,200 horizontal dpi with a color depth of 16 bits per channel all in hardware but is USB 1.1 (I don't believe it is USB 2.0 but I could be wrong). I doubt that hardware is supported in Win 10 and if it isn't I would need to spends a substantial amount of money to replace it with one that is. It is slow but it works and also is a better device for what I use it for than a regular flatbed scanners as it was designed and calibrated to scan film.

I have experienced it a number of times and would gladly take that over the rampant incompetence of the TSA. Granted I never got the big interview but a substantially shortened one (about 1 minute) but then I was a guest of the government and had additional paperwork and documentation that was previously verified through multiple other channels. The only hangup I ever had was one time the x-ray screener questioned my camera that was packed in the middle of my suite case as he couldn't identify it. I got to take my bag over to a separate area where there were other screeners. I was then first asked what the metal item was in the middle of my bag to which I told them it was my film camera. I was then instructed to open my bag and produce the camera which I did. They then asked me several questions in quick succession about it in attempt to see if I would panic, be tripped up, or show signs of being a terrorist. After that brief hangup I was allowed to proceed on my way.

However night now if a terrorist were to bomb the huge security lines that the TSA is creating and a loved one were to die in that I would consider suing the government. The reason here is that the actions that the TSA is undertaking currently are making us less safe by providing a large mass of people in a single spot so the government is actively making us less safe. I have written my useless congress critters (Kline, Klobuchar, and Franken) on this issue stating that the TSA's actions are making us less safe but they don't care. I have told friends of mine who were fat that were afraid of going to the gym because of people like the ones you mention that they shouldn't care. There are only about 3 types of people who go to the gym. First you have the people who use it as a social event. These are the ones who spend more time talking while sitting or standing next to the equipment than using it. They may make snide comments about a fat person but they often are too absorbed in their discussion so don't worry about them. Then you have the people who are the look at me types. These are the people who bang the weights around, grunt loudly, strut around. These people are about as likely to comment about fat people being there as the ones who use it as a social club but often are too absorbed in themselves. The last group is the ones who are there for their own benefit. This group shows up starts their workout, does it and leaves and only badmouths someone if they are hogging a piece of equipment by having a social discussion or being annoying by banging equipment and making a shit ton of noise.

Having helped a number of my friends who were fat lose the weight I have had to put some people in their place for making snide comments while at the gym. What I have told my friends is that you are there for you benefit, not someone else's so fuck them. You are there to get into shape and be health and everyone has to start somewhere. I help them learn how to use the equipment right, learn how to work out right, learn a proper warmup and cool down routine, and how to push themselves (this is probably the hardest). The other thing everyone has a hard time learning is to not expect fast results as building proper strength, endurance, losing fat, etc takes a long time to do it right and when done right you don't risk injury and have a better chance of the results sticking. Shows like the biggest loser make this worse as they basically show miraculous results so everyone expects that.

Having seen the picture I would have thought the BMI would be much higher as I have a BMI of about 38 but then I do a lot of power lifting and strength training. That said I don't have that body builder look as that requires a very different style of workout where you build muscle mass, tone, and definition, I go for raw strength as I find it beneficial. Also I make it a point to do a fair amount of cardio (I run or bike for 1.5 hours three times a week instead of lifting) since if one doesn't it can lead to heart problems.

His comment was that he wasn't quite sure about the "black family" that moved in. I look over to their house and see the mother and daughter planting some flowers in the garden and the father and son with a soccer net setup and playing soccer. My response to the neighbor was I wasn't worried about them as they don't seem like the type of people who will throw wild partied with a bunch of underage teenagers drinking who when the cops show up flee in the cars and run over my mail box leaving empty beer cans and bottles in my lawn. Which was what had happened a couple times that summer from the house that was next to his that was a rental and currently occupied by some 19 year olds. That rental house thankfully is no longer a rental and the current occupants are pleasant family of Mexican origin. The parents go to work every day and and is a car guy who is restoring a 67 mustang and has asked if I would help him as I have a wire feed welder so I have welded in a number of patch panels for him. I much prefer judging someone based off of their actions.

You are correct on remoteness and desirability. I bought some recreational property up in norther Minnesota not far from one of the major lakes. The multi acre wooded lot with over 200 feet of shore line was under $40,000 yet if it had been on the major lake instead of 5 miles away it would have instead cost about $200,000 because it is just a more desirable lake. Personally I will stick to being on a small 50 acre lake that only has 7 properties the border it, no public water access, and 0 fishing pressure instead of the zoo on the major lake. Add in that there is just over a square mile of public land open to hunting, snowmobiles, and ATVs just 600 feed down at the end of the road that is only accessible from this road it is a hidden gem.

As opossums aren't native to Minnesota, not protected, and have no closed season you can kill as many of them as you want and I regularly pop a few with with my air rifle. Here in Minnesota a few years ago there was some group pushing for the legalization of shooting feral cats and in a rather strange case the MN DNR stayed silent on the issue instead of weighing in. I think the reason was that it would have offended a lot of people to find out it is perfectly legal to shoot a feral cat, or a dog that has gone wild for you dog lovers, as the way the law is written any critter that is not protected or has a closed season can be freely hunted. Specifically see PDF page 26 (in the booklet is is page 24) of the most recent MN hunting regulations in the "WHAT ARE UNPROTECTED ANIMALS?" section.

  23. I don't see the issue with a digital camera. I let my oldest (7 years old) use the first digital camera my wife and I had that is pretty obsolete as it has the form factor of the old point and shoot film cameras and an 8MP sensor with reasonable glass in front of it. It is a good way for him to learn about photography as he does have an interest in it and is a lot cheaper than learning with a film camera as god knows how much film I wasted when I learned. Then again he doesn't get to keep the camera and is supervised when using it.

Anyone can go and view/download the benchmarks. These go well beyond patching, AV, firewall, and other simple standard protections that most are aware of. Even the windows protections will do a lot to stop standard attacks by at least forcing the user to jump through some hoops to really F up their system.
