The patent was granted on Tuesday and another one was granted in March 2006. They also asked Apple first to license it out and Apple told them no. So no they did not wait for a long time. The waited till the patents were granted. They applied for the patent in 1999.
success of Safari 3 (which originally scored 31, but is now Scoring 87/100) IE6, and IE7 (massive fail, of course)'." Umm what did Firefox get on this? What about Opera? If you are going to report something why not report all the facts. You listed three browsers where are the other two+ ?
another Republican will waltz into office with his bible and rifle in hand. What is wrong with the right to own a gun and the right to practice religion?
I did not say spanking was the solution. It was an example. As in the lack of respect for the teachers and the classroom. A child knows he can act up in class, not pay attention, etc. and nothing will happen to them. Because Mom and Dad both work, and the schools are not allowed to discipline. So with the lack of respect a child can disrupt the rest of the class so every child in the classroom suffers because of one. I guess you are not a teacher and you do not see this every day;-)
Now if we can just get teachers to teach Math, Reading, History, and Science. While they are at it can they stop giving children grades and make them have to work for it. Perhaps they can go back to spanking the children that act up as apposed to having to not hurt the child's feelings and make sure they are "happy". Maybe then the United States will dominate the world again in the tech and science sectors.
Oh, so when I was laid off form Dell tech support because it cost less to have the Indian worker do my job it was because they could not find enough employees? Or when you hear about assembly workers in Detroit getting laid off because Mexican workers can assemble the cars for less that is because of lack of workers? I think if you open up shop in the correct area (for tech California, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, etc) you will find the workers you need. But in Cisco's, Dell's, GM's, Ford, and HP's case they just want to save a buck.
Because the CEO wants to save a buck and would rather take that risk of China getting/understanding how to build last years model. Instead of paying the $10 an hour to the American worker where he can pay 10 employees $1 an hour (yes it is just an example I don't know the exchange rate). It all comes down to greed. It looks good on paper but in the long run it gets you into trouble.
This would be a good way for China, or any other country that creates large amounts of tech goods, to spy on countries. China could embed components in the hardware to phone home with data. Yes people would catch on eventually that every packets are being sent, but a common person would not notice. How often do you suspect your network switch of phoning home with any information that looks like a credit card number or something worse?
But your kids did not need to use it every night for Myspace:) Or for IMing. The internet is for adults sorry to tell ya. Sometimes a child needs to use the internet for research but they need supervision. Think of it like getting your drivers license you can not drive till you are 16ish. Your parents or someone trains you. So yes children should not be on the internet till they are old enough. If they can not deal with porn, spam, predators in chartrooms, bullying, and the everyday head ache of the internet then they should not be online with out a parent! I do not want my child getting shot at school because you left your kid alone on the internet and he/she got bullied and could not handle it.
serves no legitimate purpose, that would cause a reasonable person to suffer substantial emotional distress I am tired of emotional distress. Yeah someone made you feel sad get over it. THAT IS LIFE. The reason kids shoot up schools is because from day one mommy and daddy tell their children that they should always be happy. "Are you happy little timmy?" "whats wrong Timmy you want a cookie? Will that make you feel better?" What happened to hey you lost the baseball game try harder? Now it is "The ump made bad calls so thats why you lost." Shit people LIFE SUCKS deal with it.
Hey, the internet is not for kids. People need to get over it and realize it is something created by adults. It was designed for research, and now porn:) Children should not be allowed on the internet. This would solve a lot of the problems. No predators in online chat rooms, no problems on myspace, and no fat children because they are outside getting exercise as apposed to playing WOW for 15 hours a day.
It would help if the standard 3 missile was designed to be a ASAT weapon. It is designed to take out other missiles. They just used the standard 3 missile in this case because the sat was with in range and in a decaying orbit. Get your facts correct man:)
I do not get it. On my Suse box I see Linux kernel updates all the time. So Microsoft Updated the kernel to match 2008. How do we not know the only difference between the two kernels was 10 lines of code or something? So the version/build number changed. We do not know what changed. Can a normal user tell exactly what the differences were between Windows 2000 and XP (NOTICE I SAID NORMAL USER!!!) no they can not. I do not think normal people (the majority of Microsoft's user base) will know the difference. Maybe someone working for an anti virus company will notice or maybe a slashdot reader but not the majority of the users. Honestly I think this is just more slashdot fud on the front page to bash Microsoft for doing something that Linux does every few months.
The pre-install of IE? Last I checked, Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP (don't care for Vista) all came with a nice little E on my desktop. I just checked and when I clicked on it Internet Explorer came up. So maybe they should have IE as a separate product and make the OEM install IE as part of their bundle and also include FF and Opera. I bet the OEMs do not worry about installing another browser because the OS comes with IE so why bother.
I think part of the sex offenders punishment is to serve his time and ALSO be listed in a database. Why do I think this, because my wife is a social worker and she tells me the stories about how sex offenders are the one groups of criminals that are REPEAT offenders. Also how people who WERE sexually molested tend to sexually molest other people. With the current system (jail time and some evaluation from a shrink) sexual predators DO repeat offend. Should the father of killed the guy, probably not, however should the guys name be in a database yes. I think all crimes should be listed in databases. If you have to wonder if your employer is going to look you up and wonder what crimes you committed maybe we will have less stupid dumb asses in the prison system. Yeah I know you can be falsely accused/convicted and that has its own problems throughout the justice system.
Yes they are declining, but could that be because people are opting to use cell phones rather then going to find a pay phone. You know new business model. Sort of like the RIAA... People don't care for as many CD's so people would rather just download the music. Now swap out CD's for pay phones, and Download the music for a cell phone. The thing is At&t gets that its business model is changing and the RIAA does not.
Because this is slashdot and it is always about how big brother is out to get you. Even if big brother is not part of the initial equation. I think a normal person would use their cell phone and not a pay phone. I think they just wanted to put on their tin foil hat for a bit.
Take off the tin foil hat man. They are not going to take down every pay phone they are going to let other companies use them. If you bothered to RTFA.
AT&T said that it will continue to sell wholesale pay-phone service to independent operators, and it expects them to pick up some of its business. So please try not to stir up slashdot with the whole "the government is out to get me". This is a business decision. So if in a few years Walmart were to notice that the number of cash transactions drops to close to 0 so they reduce the number of cash lanes to 1 and the rest are credit only, will you say that walmart is just trying to hand the government the identities of its customers?
Umm before the war even under a different administration we did not have any of the things you speak of. The money will be waisted either way. It will either go to special interest groups or to fund the next war, or the next new bomber or a congressman trip to Hawaii on a government plane with protection provided by the secret service. Look it would be nice to fund the Radar but that is the last thing on peoples list. It is sad but it is true. Hell Bush wants the US to go back to the moon, but we can not get congress to give them enough money. Science is the last thing on peoples list. That is why most of the research etc is done by private funding etc.

It sounds like this guy is a noob. So how long will it take for the OSS to be setup and configured correctly. When the Windows software is probably point and click. Some of the $500 is going to hardware but I am sure some is also going to keeping his sanity when setting up and maintaining this system.
It probably uses less memory because when the window is minimized Windows does not have to spend the time to update the GUI. So all of the GUI data can be taken out of memory. So the actions of the GUI are still taking place but the memory holding the redrawn objects etc is not needed. It should also execute faster due to not have to refresh the screen.
Will people now associate free software with illegal activities or supporting illegal activities? I know that is not what they are doing they are helping innocent (sometimes) people from getting corn holed by the RIAA. But could the RIAA, Microsoft or other non free software people put a spin on this and say this foundation supports law breaking and if you support this foundation you also support breaking the law? I just say this because sometimes people do not get the full story before making up their mind about software, an organization, business etc.

This just in a member of Slashdot has finally had sex. Stay tuned for news at 10.

Sounds like he never took an ETHICS class. That should have whistle blowing all over it.
