    From productivity to timewasters, I'd be bankrupt if I had to pay for all the free software available to me due to it being being part of a Linux distribution. Yes, I know that much of the same software has been ported to proprietary systems such as Microsoft's and Apple's, but with Linux I know that from the ground up I can depend on the software in the base distro being free.

    ...that the Emperor could savor the cheese in the afterlife. Chinese philosophy, even today and which makes it so amenable to communism, is to favor central authority over individualism. Whether that philosophy is for the best remains to be seen. Western attempts at the same resulted in concentrating power in inept individuals.

    I congratulate Mr. Lessig on his victory. This current trend of copyright possessors to lock up humanity's legacy for decades or more has to be stopped. In essence they are given to legal ability to restrict what a person can hear and see for up to a century or more. That is an awesome power that they don't seem to have the ability to weild wisely.

    Many, if not most, people performing perfectly legal activities in bars don't want to be recorded either. If you walk into a bar with Google Glass just be prepared for the worst. One would hope that everyone would understand the inherint need human's have for privacy, but apparetly Googlephile's don't.

    "Except when in a bar" should be amended to much legislation. Bars are places people go to escape civilization, not have it thrust upon them.

    Surely someone has written open source equivelents to Snow Leopard's software by now. Even if no one did, there is no logical reason for software to become EOL'd. You either fix problems for the life of the hardware, or you provide the information for your customers to fix those problems themselves. That should be law, btw.

    Don't bring recordable media into bars. People go to bars to relax and be themselves, fear of being recorded makes them unable to do just that.

    How does one or two years of mandatory foreign language study do either?

    It enables you to understand the orders your future bosses are barking. Really, Chinese should be a mandated prerequiste at every high school today because why should the Chinese waste precious time teaching their kids to understand just what it is you are saying? Chinese kids have important things to learn and such silliness as to how to communicate non-Chinese speaker wastes so much time and energy that better be spent learning how to program hardware.

    Wouldn't that be a more interesting study? What do researchers make of those who do not want their every bowell movement be globally shared make of them? Do they simply label such people as social parranahs who are trying to hide illicit activity or do they factor in sincere the sincere desires to preserve a human being's privacy?

    When I launch a program, preferebly from a menu, I expect the program to offer a menu that provides a way for the program to accomplish the things that I want to do. Sure most will need to open a file, edit that file, and close that file, but some need to simply display that files data while others need to provide a way to change that files content. And yes, there are nealy infinite amounts of variations of just how users need to manipulate a file. A universally consistent and simple system that encompasses all the possible things that a person might what to do to data is simply not possible.

    You might just want to reconsider your stance! It is very likely that global warming will make barren lands in the north fertile, and fertile lands in the south barren. In such a scenario it is not dollars that are important.

    From what I understand, doing nothing at all results in an inevitable rise in sea levels so, if you favor inaction, then I doubt I could convince you to to take action that might allow you to take advantage of the opportunity to invest in the ocean front property that will eventually be available in West Virginia. Do nothing and hope for the best has always turned out well for humanity in the past, right?
