I remember a few years ago I said (on Slashdot) that soon the only open computers would be expensive niche products from tiny companies...it's now true for mobile devices. How long until the rest of computing follows?
The "everyone who dies becomes a zombie" type is what's more commonly referred to as supernatural zombies...when they die they become zombies because magic. A highly contagious disease that lies dormant and only causes the rabies-like symptoms to appear when the host is near death could provide a hard sci-fi explanation for it.
An anonymous, uncontrollable currency that could easily be exchanged for other currencies in any amount would bring about the Crime Singularity. Right now the last part is all that's keeping Bitcoin w/ payment obfuscation systems from fulfilling the role.
Huh amazing that it hasn't been counterfeited to death...the article even admits that there are some good fakes in circulation and there's not much anyone can do about it. Anyone who could mass produce good fakes could become fabulously rich by inflating the Somalian economy.
I will get there first and start looking for it manually!
4 million pounds is 6.5 million USD, or easily over 3x the lifetime income of a middle-class American (using one of the higher estimates available).
If I spent 5 years searching through that garbage and found the drive, it would pay off handsomely. I'd never have to work again.
Seriously if anyone knows which dump this is I want to know....on the other hand, with my luck the price of Bitcoin would rise and rise while I'm searching and then crash into worthlessness just as I'm about to cash in:-(
The only reason that Manna 2.0 systems are not in effect is that getting people to agree on a standard protocol for employee data and hiring and firing is difficult (and people don't currently see the need). It's only a matter of time before some startup decides to implement it - you're not going to get it from internal corporate projects because the middle management who run the project will quickly sink anything that could replace them. Likewise for a standard protocol for bidding on goods and services.
I think this is one of the easiest parts, the data stores are already in place on HR blacklist sharing services. With an API or at worst a scraper script, the data on them would become machine-readable. Or a new service could be set up very easily.
Look at all the "social media dashboard" mobile apps that connect to multiple proprietary services, they are just as complex.
The gear they're using sounds like a very primitive precursor to the headsets from Manna...which are already very close to completely possible. Just some Google Glass units and the rest is software (where the difficulty lies, in object recognition of course).
Your best bet is a thick layer of data that defines you as normal, therefore boring.
The feds thought Asimov was "interesting,", a guy who only could have been more "boring" if his ancestors came from England instead of Russia. Are you sure it's possible to be "boring?"
Stability control is an umbrella term for many different systems which may include anti-lock brakes. All are electronic nannies and arguably bullshit.
Man I really braced up when I saw this thread, whenever automotive matters are discussed on Slashdot there's a torrent of Reddit-level stupidity.

It's not the case in most places on the planet...just the same little incestuous circle-jerk in northern California.
Things are a lot nicer in Silly Valley jobs. Sounds like you've been working in the real world, which is indeed a hellhole.
The only one of those that is innovative is the self-driving cars and maybe glass (wearables aren't new...just less clunky now).
IIRC Gmail was developed in-house as a "20% time" project.

That was my first thought when I saw the pic, looks way more like a Dalek with its upright stance and conical profile.
A double XKCD!!! Wow, oh wow!!! Whoa!! WHAT DOES IT MEAN!?!? T_T
Sun: "Don't touch me, I'm hot!" 8-|
ISON: "Gaaaah I can't stop or even slow down a little or change direction on my own!" D:
Sun "Oh no you're trapped in my gravity now! This is gonna hurt!" 8-(
ISON: "AAAAAAAAAH IT BURNS!!! AAAAH HELP! MAKE IT STOP!!!" D8
Sun: "I can't, I wish I could! Oh man are you OK?" :O
ISON: "Owww so much pain...." x_x
The NSA is evil, not stupid, and this would be very smart.
Dammit, my mod points expired!

I think you underestimate how much priority they put on new forms of revenue.

I came in here and searched for "photo" and found your post, because this was my first thought.
Photodegradable bags are the answer, easy. They're already the norm in many places.
CanÂt blame the US, this is exactly what the Chineez have been doing a long time.
I'll blame them. I'll blame anyone who sinks to their enemy's level of wrongdoing.
Sounds like "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

That's what Lenny's for :-)
Try the whistle every time they answer. If that fails, try Asterisk + Lenny:
