Can we please decouple the jokes from a serious story? I'm hereby ending this discussion by you loonies; consider this a maniac blocking comment.

  2. Booooring... on 13 New Windows Security Vunerabilities · · Score: 4, Insightful

Another day another vulnerability. This is getting old. What's the point in continually reporting this drivel? We all know MS has their issues - but frankly I'm getting tired of all the wasted space on /.
    You're preaching to the choir!!

  3. Re:well... on ExpressCards, the new PCMCIA? · · Score: 1

That's not totally a ridiculous idea. The ExpressCard is based on PCI-Express x1 - so the bandwidth is pretty sweet. It's not going to reach full 8x AGP but it will blow the socks off of a PCI video card. We're talking PCI (132MB/s) versus PCIe (~310MB/s).

I read on a sneak-preview website about another new MS Product that is going to take the market by storm. It's a really slick GUI to your computer that makes everything so simple anyone can understand it.

  6. It Depends on What School on Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering? · · Score: 2

When I was going through this same decision process, I decided that either was a valid position. Certain schools however have an outstanding program in one of the fields and that's what you should study. For instance, Carnegie Mellon is probably THE school for Computer Science, but their CompE department isn't world class. Alternatively, UIUC probably has one of the best CompE departments but their CIS department isn't number one.

The basic tenet that CompE = hardware, CIS = software is true. However, my experience is that CompE is a much more well-rounded degree. A true plain-vanilla CIS major is nothing but a two-bit (no pun intended) lab monkey who sits in front of a screen all day. If you can find a CIS department that doesn't teach programming, but instead teaches software ENGINEERING then you will have the opportunity to learn about programming theory, algorithm theory, mathematical representations, etc. An engineering CIS department is a thousand times better.

On the other hand, at least at my school, our CompE department could wipe the walls with the CIS kiddies. We have to spend nearly as much time programming as they do, and are often better at it. I think that understanding the internal hardware makes you a lot more qualified to write code that best utilizes that hardware. And by the way, most CIS majors couldn't write assembly to save their grandmothers.

The final comment is that often CIS departments are not accredited progams, where on the other hand CompE generally is. That can be of critical importance if you end up at a state school especially. Always stick with an accredited program over a non-accredited one (unless it's some special program like video game programming or something that is not universal) because you'll be on the same playing field with other graduates in your major.

    Hope it helps,

  7. Shouldn't we consider this a "good" thing? on Athlons Sold Out · · Score: 5

Though certainly market analysts and financial planners are taken aback at this kind of thing. Loss of profit due to underproduction is never a good thing. Consider that AMD's ability to make money is essentially now shut down until they are caught up with demand. This also can lead to price increase which hurts the end-user and can also lead computer companies to choose Intel over AMD as they don't suffer from these problems.
All things considered however, this means that AMD has strongly underforecasted its ability to advertise, sell, gain market share. We should be quite pleased to see that the only true Intel competitor is even more successful than it thought it ever would be. My congratulations go out to AMD for their success - it can only help out consumers in the long run.

  8. Environmental Catch-22 on How Socially Responsible Are Computer Companies? · · Score: 1

Perhaps you raise an interesting Catch-22... On one hand you get: faster, more powerful, less care taken towards the environment On the other hand: slower, socially responsible Now consider how much research and additional number crunching and predictive science can be done by that additional power. Perhaps in the end that research and development would pay off and actually solve more important social ills, or the environmental problems themselves.

Unfortunately you all keep making the same rounding mistakes. We know that Pi=3.141592653590... (That is properly rounded) so today isn't pi day at all. 3/14/16 would be Pi day, not 3/14/15 as originally counterargued. And many of your other arguments were wrong too.

  10. Why must it be a PORT? on Forum: Future Ports of Games to Linux · · Score: 1

Perhaps the thing that would help the Linux game community the most is an ohh-ahh game of their own. All the people who are hardcore gamers aren't going to want a "port" just so that they can play under Linux (especially since according to other posts performance is weak). If a game was developed for Linux that captured the envy of the non-*nix community, then it can be ported to Windows. It is unfortunate that such a project would be difficult to find funding for - but it is almost guaranteed that all the Linux gamers would buy a product MADE for their platform. Perhaps a great example of this strategy is Bungie. They made their first hit with Marathon - a crummy Doomish clone for MacOS. In reality, that game had impressive depth and graphics for its time even for an Intel machine. Now look at Bungie - they are soon to release their new hit Halo which frankly looks awesome (and is for Win98 AND MacOS). If a company took those ideas and applied them to a Linux/Win crossover instead of Mac I can see them making it big in a 5 year span or less.
