I'm surprised there's even a limit. Think about it for a while... the USB device only has to receive. Their transmitter can be as powerful as they want, so that's not a problem. To send data back, either the USB can store what it needs and be picked up later... or, it can infect the computer and use it to transmit. If it has ANY wifi capability, they can use that to transmit, and even if it doesn't I'd imagine there's all sorts of nifty tricks they could do like varying current draw in pulses to send a signal... or maybe the NSA can see the computer through a window and they can flicker the power light.

Keep in mind they are saying "Up to" 8 miles away and the NYT has redacted info at the NSA's request. So it may be that if they're within 100 yards of it they can have direct coms with the device but beyond that they have lots of tricks and such to still be able to connect. Given an unlimited budget and resources this doesn't seem all that impossible.

It doesn't matter how many coders they get in the market place, they're always going to be able to find a better job in management, accounting, engineering or whatever that pays twice what their employer wants to pay for coding. I'm sorry Microsoft/Apple, coding is not factory work. There's no way you're going to be able to pay minimum wage for this kind of talent.

  9. Almost as much of an embarrassment as the definition of the kilogram? I'm kind of sick of this complaint... The weight of a kilogram is precise enough for nearly all applications. Those rare applications where its imprecision makes a difference should use a DIFFERENT unit of measurement. Invent a new one, like the mass of a hydrogen atom or something. "This thing here is 458 H masses" There, problem solved. The same with the Amp... it works fine for installing my celing fan. Don't go screwing with it just to satisfy some particle physicists. If Particle physicists don't think the amp is precise enough, USE A DIFFERENT UNIT.

Are they next going to complain that the AU is too imprecise for them to do proper measurements at the atomic level so we should therefore spend millions refining what an AU is? No... because that would be stupid. Measuring things that way thousands of grams with a unit that's precise to within a few hundred atoms is good enough. Stop using measurements designed for Newtonian physics at the atomic level and there's no longer a problem.

This is assuming that all humans are created equal. And while in a theological/philosophical sense we are (we all are born with the same human rights) we are not all created equal with regard to our ability to be valuable to industry. Computerized automation is replacing a lot of the jobs that people with some of the least valuable skill sets could fill. How long before McDonalds is nothing more than a glorified vending machine? Do gas stations really need a building? Car Washes are almost totally automated now. My cousin is an idiot, and those are the kinds of Jobs he can get... when they're gone, what is he supposed to do? Rob banks?

I'm not apposed to advances, I'm just suggesting that this is something we need to think about and address. There are people that just don't have the ability to program, or design. If we eliminate manual labor and service industry jobs, what are those people supposed to do?

Charter Schools have one purpose: To circumvent the teachers union. The republicans know this, the unions know this, but no-one wants to say it out loud. In nearly all other professions your success and pay are based on the quality of your work. Why not teachers? I'm not saying the proposals put forth by republicans are correct, they have a lot of flaws. But the teachers unions wont even entertain the idea... or any idea.

    Here's my proposal:
    1. Get rid of summer break.
    2. Teachers get bonuses for their classes improvement on standardized tests. This means that working in "Good school" would mean they had the least chance of getting a large bonus. Great teachers could go to troubled schools, make big improvements and rake in the cash. This would make troubled schools attractive to those good at their jobs.
    3. Eliminate Sports, Music, and Art. Stop giving children the false impression that those are actually careers you can follow. Their parents can take them to the YMCA after school if they want. It's not like school music and art programs are teaching kids anything about art that's relevant to modern society anyway.
    4. The only computers in the school should be in the computer lab. The only classes that involve them should be a basic computer competency class and maybe a programming elective. This "The school district buys everyone an iPad" bullshit is insane and pointless. The $30k digital whiteboards are insane as well.

What a load of crap. Charter schools are about choice. Of course there are bad charter schools. Kids are getting SHOT in public schools, so should we consider them to be dangerous beds of anarchy? Is it fair to a family that cares about their childs future that they have to either let that child suffer through the Chicago public school system simply because they can't afford to move?

And lets not forget, this entire issue would not exist if it weren't for the complete and total iron grip the teachers unions have on our schools. If they could admit that there may be some things the teachers themselves could do to help, and that simply throwing more money at the school might not be the answer we might get somewhere. But when their pay is locked to their education level, you end up having teachers with Doctorates in English teaching kids how to read huckleberry fin and complaining that their $80k a year salary is not commensurate with their education level. That's because we don't need people with 12 years of college experience to explain huckleberry fin to 15yr olds! The fact of the matter is you should be getting paid half that!!! gah, this drives me nutz.
