Okay, so tell me how you go about making any sort of money on a game that is written solely Open Source? ESR talks about how you design from the start Open Source, but if you do that, then all your neato engine stuffs are out in the open, able to be studied and stolen bye your competitors. The gaming industry is fueled by companies with people like Carmack, people that can code a fast pixel pushing 3D engine that oozes realism. If you give away your goods to everyone from the start, and people study your code, your competitors are going to be able to catch up that much faster to you. If I were designing a game and I had some bright ideas to make the engine faster, or do some amazing things never seen before, I surely wouldn't give out the goods until I've gotten some recognition for it, and made $money$ on it.
I guess the money making argument is similar to Microsoft Open Sourcing their code and then feeling they are unable to sell their product because too many people would 'pirate' their software. I dunno, what do you think?
I also don't like the tone ESR takes on id, scolding him for releasing the game as it is, and chastising him for the design decisions he made. He did what needed to be done, and may have made compromises for performance. That is how game engine creators squeeze more fps and features out of a computer, by making compromises. It is design and use of the compromise that makes engine designers the game gods they are. I'm sure if Carmack were designing firewalls his compromises would have been different.
id released the source in good faith to the Open Source community because they have made their money and gotten the recognition they desired. They have given us the source code to a great game as a gift. Be thankful, instead of a jerk...

That is the first thing I thought of too! hehe
Sounds like a show on Fox:
"Amazing True Stories 3: Gates On Fire"
The listing would be like this:
"Bill hath unleashed his Hell Minions on some unsuspecting software developers, causing system crashes everywhere. Only one man can stop him: Tim O'Reilly! Using the powers of the press, publishing UNIX manuals to kingdom come, and forming movements of people led by the likes of RMS and other evagelists, they unite against the one supreme evil: Microsoft."
It would open as such:
"Hidden in the deepest bowels of Washington lies a power not understood to mortal man. The power of an animated paperclip. Seemingly benign, they go unnoticed, though sometimes scoffed at. Until one day, they are summoned. Summoned up from Hells Harddrive. This day is called 'BSOD Day'."
Yadda yadda...
I'd make a movie short about it if I had the time... oh well...
I found his views on the Roman "inspiration", as he put it, rather contrived as we all know that the Romans stole art and design from the Greeks. I think he should have checked his references better.
I think we should get Mike Hart as one of the intervewees on the weekly featured articles... This way we can ask him stuff and see what kind of responses he has to TEI-SGML and other things like it...
I don't think he will go commercial. The guy's an old hippy. sure, hippies have gone yuppie, but I think this guy still believes in the hippy ideals... and I don't think that is going to change...
And on a related account various rumors have started that Sega is to be teaming with Transmeta to provide a sophisticated new 3D graphics chip technology to Sega's arcade machines.
now if he can add 3d card support, you can finally have a good(?!?) reason to ask your boss for a 3d card in your pc... and a sound card with good speakers...;)
if you have ever seen it... you know what i'm talking about... if not, don't see it (unless it's on MS3K), cuz it's not worth it. (I know, not quite the same as growing your own tissue... but still...
How about "Thor's Hammer" instead. If you remember, back when Carmack was doing his original research on the first Quake, the 'quakeguy' was going to be a badass carrying Thor's Hammer? Yup...
great, so does this mean that the audience will become the stereotypical satan worshipping antisocial nerd, or will they become the other percentage that have ever played/involved themself with D&D which is the role of the bored player who can barely stay awake because of a lousy DM telling the story (or lousy movie telling a story...)?
cool... quetzelcoatl is the mexican god of death if you didn't know. my friend kurt has a tattoo of the traditional quetzelcoatl on his right arm. it's really cool (neither of us are mexican)...
