Yes, I've heard the QT sucks for full screen thing myself many times. I just tell that it's a free player that won't "present movie" and if you get the pro version it will do that and much more. Or I put them in front row (on the new macs):D
yeah, first thing in my head about this story was, I haven't been able to download "just" quicktime in a looooong time. wich makes me mad for computers that the users *shouldn't* have access to music software like itumes. *sigh*
Actually, with the release of OpenOffice.org 2, there's going to be a nice open source "Access killer" type database in the package. I've been playing with the preview, and it works very much the same as Access.
I tried the PLE for 4 or 4.5 (what ever was on the UT2003 cd) and it was pretty useless if you wanted to present anything as a portfolio, imho anyway. The watermarking isn't "little", like you'd see on most tv stations. It's across the whole image.
Plus, if you go and get a full version of Maya later, you have to do all your work over again. So if you created an amazing model, then get funding to persue it, you have to start all over from scratch.
If you can live with these things, then I guess it's minor. Personally, (speaking with basicly no real tallent in the area) I'd stick to K3D for full modeling, and Poser (yeah I bought it... it was only ~$300) for the "cheating" animations.
Damn right. You can either use the Lindows install that's on them or strip it out do your own Linux or even Free/OpenBSD install instead to lower system overhead..
Dual anything for a private/small public server is way way overkill.. I had to face that reality myself when setting up my own various servers.
My personal home server is an AMD 850 that use as/with Apache/PHP/MySQL for developing, print server, personal ftp, capping TV PVR style, Samba share. Email is to come.
I've never had any issues, even when I had roommates using it aswell(max 5 users) during caping.
I see no reason (other than availability) you couldn't go to a second hand shop and pick up a few 500-1500MHz boxes and spread the services out even.(doubtfull you'd have to)
I was pissed last year, so much in fact that i'm not even watching this year.
Damn the CRTC and the Canadian content laws!
if i wanted to see shit comercials on Fox, i'd have tuned into global in the first place.
Dosen't this kind of violate the terms of the cable contract? I paid to get fox out of rochester, not to have global st. john on 2 channels... I bought my folks a satilite dish, and they don't signal switch. if you're watching FoxRO, you see FoxRO. How come the cable can't do the same thing as the sat people? i wont get cable tv in my next apt, and i'm going to call the company and tell them exactly why i'm not getting the service. BSD core? YES OpenBSD? NO, it's FreeBSD. And yes, the BSDs do share a lot of the same code, but Darwin itself is FreeBSD based. "The most widely-sold UNIX-based operating system, Mac OS X offers a unique combination of technical elements to the discerning geek, such as fine-grained multithreading, Mach 3.0 microkernel, FreeBSD services, tight hardware integration and SMP-safe drivers, as well as zero configuration networking. Tiger's state-of-the-art kernel features improved SMP scalability and 64-bit virtual memory, while standards-based access control lists take UNIX permissions to the next level." Add to that the FreeBSD "Beastie" deamon mascot, and there ya go, case closed. It's not a blowfish folks, it's a Beastie.
only been up for 10 mins and the server's already /.'d... w00t

Seriously though, I've been toying with the idea of getting an Aibo and re-programming it to be a personal assistant that would walk around the house.
Great, so one of these things is going to get a soul, fall in love, and possibably distroy human interaction for all time?

I think this is proving that (if not techs/programmers) someone (Bill?) is reading /. on a semi-regular basis.
