"The U.S. view is that we don't want to see government, or in this case, the World Summit, advocate one type of software over another." -Sally Shipman

When you get down to the nut and bolts all software is just 1s and 0s: there aren't different "types" at that level.

I think what Sally Shipman really means is "We want our large US software firms to continue to reap Huge profits: Open Source threatens that."

That's fine, after all it's a US delegation and they're supposed to look out for their countrymen. Now, why can't they word it that bluntly? Simple: because Open Source doesn't contribute millions to election campaigns.

If something like that would happen, they could just sell it as a demonstration of the bad things that happen when source code is publicly available, like that of certain other systems...

It would demonstrate that closed source pushers are concerned with secrecy and profits.

If closed source is more secure, as MS and many others maintain, then they shouldn't be as concerned about the black hats looking at the source as they are how the source was leaked. Source code can be open and secure, much like any decent cryptographic system.

Mind you, these are the people that forgot the "L" in TLC stood for "Learning" and started filling the channel with home decorating shows.
