"The U.S. view is that we don't want to see government, or in
this case, the World Summit, advocate one type of software over
another." -Sally Shipman
When you get down to the nut and
bolts all software is just 1s and 0s: there aren't different "types"
at that level.
I think what Sally Shipman really
means is "We want our large US software firms to continue to reap
Huge profits: Open Source threatens that."
That's fine, after
all it's a US delegation and they're supposed to look out for their
countrymen. Now, why can't they word it that bluntly? Simple: because
Open Source doesn't contribute millions to election campaigns.

Astronaut: Hey, we have this game in the US too! Umm

Cosmonaut: Be more specivic.
Astronaut: A sticker that says "Outer Hatch"?
Cosmonaut: Da! You wi.....

whoops yeah that's right, my mistake. That all said, I have a neat pic I took with my Intel USB microscope. It's a piece of fluff inside an old 2716 EPROM I had from ~1981 (from an old Apple video card).
Do those FPS drop when in 24/32 bit colour? How about shading? Realtime anti-aliasing? Maybe stereoscopic display for those with 3D LCD shutter glasses?
My aging GeForce 4 can play games well at 1024x768 but I need to lose a lot of the above features to get a decent frame rate.
I've been patiently waiting for the release of Thief 3 and/orDoom 3 before updating my game PC. It looks like the game will be out before the hardware though, but it illustrates that sitting tight will get you more bang for the buck.
Of course when Duke Nukem Forever comes out you could likely buy a Cray machine for $24.95.
twice now I have had my workflow disrupted because of hardware failure and it isn't just a matter of copying the files to pick up where I left off. [...] That is why I will be choosing to run Linux on Apple hardware.
You're nuts. That's tantamount to "My Ford Pinto kept exploding when it got rear ended, so I changed brands of gasoline."
If there are hardware issues with your machine, the choice of OS won't make much difference.
Am I the only one who just spits out a random string of numbers when they ask for phone number or zip code info at the checkout?
If you have "Safeway Club Cards" or other cards where they shave a few percent off the prices in payment for collecting your buying habits you can have fun. Assuming friends are also into it you can toss your cards in a hat and draw them out randomly. FWIW, my current club card is still in my 2 year+ ex-wife's name.
If something like that would happen, they could just sell it as a demonstration of the bad things that happen when source code is publicly available, like that of certain other systems...
It would demonstrate that closed source pushers are concerned with secrecy and profits.
If closed source is more secure, as MS and many others maintain, then they shouldn't be as concerned about the black hats looking at the source as they are how the source was leaked. Source code can be open and secure, much like any decent cryptographic system.
Submitting a patch would suggest you've seen their source code. You may be opening yourself up to legal problems. No, I want the black hats to look at it, after all Microsoft are the ones that claim closed source is more secure.
Naww, I like Ash from Alien. It shows the dark side of artificial intelligence. We can't guarantee that all makers of all robots, or those that control them, will adhere to the "no harm to humans.." Golden Rule.
And one minor admonishment: just because home improvement isn't something that interests...
Home improvement does interest me but there are lots of other channels for that (HGTV, etc) I used to enjoy TLC for the learning content. Now, though, they see the money in home improvement shows and have basically dropped any science-ish shows. Trading Space, While You Were Out, etc.. I don't know what they play now as I cancelled my cable TV service a while back.

They don't do the oft-maligned term "hacker" any justice by
including convicted criminals in that list. They should have distinct
lists, IE: a "Hackers Hall of Fame" and a "Crackers Hall of
Shame" rather than lumping the two together. Mind you, these are
the people that forgot the "L" in TLC stood for
"Learning" and started filling the channel with home
decorating shows.

Yeah, they should have just let the British build it.
Nah, all that leaking oil floating around in low orbit would pose a threat to other spacecraft.

Therefore, I wonder how the central banks of the world are going to implement this in OSS image editors.
They won't have to. They're incorporating the technology directly in the printers. It may be a while before we see opensource firmware for printers.
WANTED TO BUY:
1x Adobe Photoshop version
up to but not including CS.
1x High quality inkjet printer,
2002-2003 vintage
Will pay cash.
Hmmm... Well we could take those that won't learn English and feed them to the starving folks who will.
Well.. that dashes all hope I had for finding a papyrus re-issue of "Babylonian C for Dummies". It's been out of print for millennia.
No no no..
ROM == Read Only Memory
PROM == Programmable Read Only Memory (write once)
EPROM == Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory
What you're talking about is a flash ROM, like an EPROM not a ROM.
You'll need an Absorbine Jr. Patch for your other arm if you load it up with pr0n..
.. as a promotional offer it will come pre-loaded with the brand new game Duke Nukem Forever.
I doubt anyone would consider showing 10 lines or so of source code out of millions a copyright violation
SCO does.

If it listens for tense, cursing callers then this system will never work well on phone sex lines.
