I have read about, but can't for the life of me locate a link to, a steam engine that ran continuously for over a century. The train in question probably goes in for regular maintenance when it needs it, but it's possible that the drivetrain hasn't been modified in all that time.
The whole point of video media is that they are read only. That way they don't get recorded over and the movie's there when you want to watch it. RO media is also cheaper, faster, and more durable.
Ah, a classic example of European myopia. China produces 1/5 of the world's pollution which the US sees as smog and acid rain all over its western half. China is developing as we speak. They are forgoing the use of, "green" technology that is now available and affordable. China is taking an already delicate situation and making it worse as fast as possible. In the US that's felt as the west coast getting smoggier, acid-rainier, and just plain more polluted. The US pollutes too, but they have an entrenched infrastructure that was created at a time when pollution was less of a concern and are working, however perfunctorily, to change that. What validates this article is that China is tipping the balance in the wrong direction and will continue to heedlessly do so even after the EU, US, and rest of the world should have gotten their act cleaned up.
That same 99% really can't live without their flash, though. What would be the point of going to someone's social-networking page if it didn't have multiple slide-shows and pop-music blaring on pageload?
I don't actually have any friends, you insensitive clod! Seriously, though what's so bad about looking for friends online? Not that empirical evidence is worth anything, but I have met a few nice people on the sites in question and lightning might strike twice.
Yeah, but how would you feel if every time you go to the site you see a couple dozen friend requests only to be, in several seconds time, re-informed that nobody wants to be your friend, they just want to take your money. A minute, twelve seconds, and all that hope wasted...
From what I've observed the distinction is most women want to be pretty for the sake of being pretty whereas most guys want to be sexy so they can have sex.
Considering what the Chinese gymnastics team looks like and what people were saying about them, how does proof of [at least one of] their minority change anything?
Google crossed that line a long time ago.
Yay I can watch on my overpriced Mac! Unlike Netflix. :(
Or you could sell your overpriced mac, buy a computer that can view amazon and netflix; and still have money left over for a pony.

Yes, it's weapons-grade beer. You've also stocked up most of this continent's oil too... hmmm.
In five years, physical formats won't mean a thing. Media Files will be downloaded if the infrastructure can keep up.
I live in the US, you insensitive clod!

The manufacturers followed the defective design, so it's their fault. At least, that's what the lawyers tell me.
You can erase it and store actual information on it?
I suppose China is very disappointed over its 0.0000000255 Gmpp (Gold medals per person) in the recent Olympic games.

They could have picked a slightly better time in US history to start emulating. Learning from other's mistakes, anyone?

If you want to address a more discerning crowd, write for New York Times.
Oooooooh, That's harsh.
Real geeks use butterflies. Pretty much like that.
There's a joke about rocket-whoring in here somewhere...
You must be new here.
Redundant, I know, but when has the law ever stopped a patent troll?

You do realize they usually take your picture when you pay cash too, right?

Even if nobody is going to admit anything it's nice to see what everybody suspected in black and white.

No, that would be painful. Don't forget these are the people who brought you your name and horoscope written on a grain of rice.
...why would you be reading /. ?
