The TSA should be abolished. This is getting ridiculous. I think their new plan is that if the "terrorists" have cancer they will be too weak to be a threat and the public will be too sick to be a nuisance as well. I'm slowly caring less and less about the TSA grunts, but why are they not required to wear radiation monitors for their own protection? The idiots in charge are not getting exposed to any of this, nor are they using know best practices for dealing with radiation.
"One of the studies, which examined more than 1,000 adult patients at four hospitals, projected that the dose of radiation received in a single heart scan at age 40 would later result in cancer in 1 in 270 women and 1 in 600 men.
To be fair, heart scans are the high mark for radiation dosage. Since you need to look at how the heart actually moves/cycles it take much longer to image compared to other parts of the body. There are also many different CT scanners. Some of the high slice scanners reduce the dosage considerably. The Toshiba and Philips 320/256 slice scanners can image the heart in a single rotation rather than continual helical rotations. There are also several new algorithms that use lower dosages with a worse s/n ratio then clean it up in post processing. Regardless, I don't expect DHS/TSA to concern themselves with proper radiation procedures, nor the same scrutiny towards calibration as medical devices.
Oops. I meant to link CSI to this They forgo the reflection off of the glasses and get the one right off of an eye. And of course: "Enhance!" "Zoom!" "Stop!" "Enhance!"...
Great. The we should decrease their budget by at lease this much for the next fiscal year.
So instead of $8,100,000,000, they'll only get $8,099,600,000. That'll show 'em.
Well yes and no. Personally I'd like to see the TSA de-funded and eliminated, but that's probably not going to happen. However having their budget actually decreased would be a nice start. When I say decreased, I don't mean deceases the way government defines it. To congress this means that if they got $8.1 billion this year and were going to get $9 billion next year and instead only get $8.5 billion, it's a decrease of half a billion dollars. I'm sure like most government programs having to get by with the same budget, or slightly less even, this could perhaps serve as some kind of notice.
I mean close all the loopholes. Including moving out of the country. If they ever want to come back to visit family they will owe that tax bill.
Wow. Just wow! I was at a loss for words for several minutes after reading this. With all of the talk about slippery slopes and freedom on/. and someone even modded this as insightful. And talk about taking away any incentive to be successful. Who sets the threshold for what is "rich". Compared to many parts of the world people in the US living on $15K/year are living lavishly.
So the other day I was on the bus and I saw this hot woman driving a car. I pulled out the iPhone, SSH'd into home and ran nmap on her license plate.
LOL, stupid woman didn't notice her gas cap was left off from the last fill but nmap caught it. Used nc to push 'fire.jpg' into her tank and she blew up.
True story, fucker.
So are you saying she was "hot" prior to blowing up, or are you being literal and meant afterward? Just wondering.
Cancer has enormous costs associated with treating it (expensive drug cocktails, radiation therapy etc) even if all it does is extending the life expectancy of the patient a few more years.
Also associated with smoking are high blood pressure and heart disease. Which are not necessarily fatal but costs a lot of money to treat.
I'm not saying that cancer treatments are not expensive. But there have been several studies that show that people who smoke create less medical expenses over their life than non-smokers do. I'm by no means promoting that smoking is a good thing, nor do I smoke. Non-smokers tend to be in better health, so when they get sick they will have a better chance at recovery and eventually get another illness that they recover from, on and on. That's what several studies have shown. If you disagree, then fund your own study to disprove it.
I'm not even sure if any of these studies have factored in the massive amount of extra taxes that smokers pay for tobacco products. Additionally they tend to pay into SSI in the US, or some other retirement program which less of them will collect on, or for a lesser time when compared to non-smokers.
I want the opposite, what I want is a combo, TV+PS3+Blu-ray, a Playstation TV or Xbox TV. I think Sony could do this, if they were smart enough, that would be an unbeatable all-in-one solution.
I'm sure Sony could easily do this. But it would cost you a small fortune. Plus it would really suck when one of those integrated devices breaks. It's much more economical to replace a broken PS3 or Xbox than the entire system.
Personally, I hate multiple remotes, DVD players, Netflix dongles and such stuff. Just one bezel free huge rectangle with PS3 and Blu-ray drive seamlessly integrated, that would be nice. No more cables, no more input selection or remote controller fights.
Both my TV and Bluray player can access Netflix (and other services) as well as my HTPC. Admittedly it was a pain to set up initially, but it's all done and I never have to think about it again(so far). I also only have one remote for my TV, HTPC (though there is a wireless keyboard & mouse if needed),CD player, bluray, DVD player, reciever, and DTV PVR. Hell it even controls the digital picture frame in that room as well as a Roomba vacuum cleaner.
I turned up the Brightness on my TV, but it didn't do what I hoped.
I've been thinking, for some time, that it was broken too. But now I'm wondering if it was installed years ago for a future upgrade that they never got around to. Perhaps these new "smart" TV's will get an intelligence setting. I mean besides the one labeled "Off".
Except there was a Dutch study done a few years back that showed smokers cost the health care system less money over their lifetime than non-smokers. There were several other studies that also back this up. As far as I know, there has been nothing to show otherwise since. Basically smokers get cancer and die earlier than non-smokers. Non-smoking "healthy" people tend to live much longer and get more exotic diseases which cost more to treat.
I was just trying to make the point that you're not flying with some sort of "flight-safe" knife, you're probably able to detach the actual drive.
You're still flying with some part of a "weapon"/knife. That's grounds enough for the TSA, I'm sure.[/sarcasm]
I fly often and used to try to be understanding of the TSA. But in the last year, or so, they've become increasingly obnoxious. I've seen other passengers harassed because they choose a pat-down over being irradiated. Passengers treated like criminals because they had a tube of tooth paste in their luggage. I had a VGA card ruined because a idiot agent pulled it out of the antistatic bag and swiped it all over with a cloth while arguing with me the entire time. Then afterward told me I could have just checked it, which was exactly what I asked to do while she argued with me.
And of course any files they happen to find along the way. "IP address x.x.x.x has a copy of the Communist Manifesto"
Joe McCarthy has been dead for over 50 years. I think you're safe owning the Communist Manifesto. Searches in your browser history for al-Qaeda might be a different matter.
I would guess that cyanobacteria also bound large quantities of iron, phosphorus and nitrogen as it metabolizes all three. I knew of several people who could not get rid of the stuff. In the end they used media that phosphates would bind to.
"My understanding... is that atmospheric oxygen at levels high enough to sustain oxygen based metabolism came from plants and trees"
Your understanding is quite wrong.
By the time there were "plants and trees" the major part of the biosphere already was oxigen dependant.
The change of the atmosphere from reductive to oxidative predates trees by about two billion years -the start of the proterozoic age is marked about 2.4 billion years ago (with a strong spike around the precambric which still predates trees by about 300 million years).
It's my understanding that cyanobacteria is responsible for initially creating earths oxygen. I can't say I know much about the historical aspect of it. But I used to keep saltwater reef/fish tanks, and it can become a big problem if you do something wrong. It's really nasty slimy algae looking stuff. I used to find in ironic how much many fish keepers despised the stuff, and yet we probably wouldn't be here without it.
Looks like this time, they have been banned for good. Unless a new entity crops up and TPB starts sharing 'data' with the new entity.
Maybe they could call it the Pirate Ocean...
You need to start smaller. If they ban Ocean where do you go from there? The Pirate Planet? That''ll probably get you sued by Disney or someone. How about "the Pirate Cove"(probably already trade marked), the Pirate Fiord, or the Pirate Loch". Burn through the "bay" synonyms first.;-)
Why are you people not protesting in the streets over this stuff?
Probably for the same reason that no one is "protesting in the streets" in the US over it. The vast majority simply do not know about this, and many of the ones who know simply don't understand the ramifications.
The TSA should be abolished. This is getting ridiculous. or just direct a satellite to read the reflections on your glasses.
Sorry, we're talking about the NSA, not CSI.
This is probably appropriate too.
The summary says her research is based on her family living arrangements. Is she planning on growing a shell or something?
Perhaps. I would imagine crabs being introduced into a homeless shelter is not that uncommon.

If the TSA had morals, they would donate that money to charity!
If the TSA had morals they wouldn't break stuff, harass people, molest children, steal property, or frankly exist at all.
Next up: Extradition because you violated a website's policies.
Sadly, that's a possibility

How about "Bing" or is that still under (C) by Monty Python?
No, Microsoft.
Vladimir Putin (takes his shirt off and shakes fist at the sky): "DAMN YOU PALIN!!!"

He may be long gone, but his legacy of paranoia has not.
Nor his epic stupidity. You need look no further than the TSA to find that.
