Heh, looks like you spoke to soon. We will get to see horrible versions of dune messiah and children of dune, Wow, I wonder how many kids will be turned off to the books becouse of this crap mini series.
You have lived in a world of perfect physics much to long. When you step down from the ivory tower you will see that never do you have a 1m 1m 1m box, that the lever is never exactly 2m, that the sack of potatos never wieghs exactly 5 kilos. Measure the forces when the whole is slightly off center, or the disk isnt balacned, at 40x the entere thing will flutter whildly until its launched out the front is lodged into your head. This seems like the worse new invention of the year.
Its not a mini-series. There is just to many things wrong with this mini-series to carry the DUNE name, rather I would say is a planed farce.
I have come up with a new drinking game to follow the series, and now its enjoyable.

Take turns being IT You bet shots against the other people in the room.
For ever Mis pronounced Name that you catch you make someone drink, For everyone one you miss that is pointed out by someone in the room, they make you drink. Same goes for randomly inserted extra characters that dont belong in a sceane.
Everyone Drinks for gross plot errors, which include sceane timing.
Be sure to have extra drinks on hand, and make sure your health coverage also applies to liver damage.
Bah, its a trivial hack to Apache to kill the connection if the refering URL is http://slashdot.org/*
True this wont be stop the DOS, but will stop you wasting your banwidth charges.
For those of you with a good eye, you can see a Sun Ultra450 in enemy of the state. Jason Lee (sp?) uses one for video editing that he caputers of birds. In his apartment you see him useing CDE and writes a file to a Zip disk. I have never used a Zip drive on a sun before, but I dont see why the scsi model wouldnt work. The case design of the the computer gives it away as a sun ultra 450,
the use of CDE just confirms hes using solaris. Now almost none of my non-unix user friends could remember that, but all of the unix users quickly noticed and commented. I suspect we can be sure that no one that doesnt already notice this to be a windowmaker dock & enlightenment combo will ever know they saw something that they could be using today.
After reading a few of the marktoid blurbs on the new amiga envoirment, it sounds like amiga is reinventing the java wheel. I mean where have we seen 'write once, run anywhere' before? Also the idea of a singal compatiable abi across several different envoirments/chip archetecures seems again just like java. The final thing is how its being pushed, as an envoirment that scales from cell phones to super computer, java marketing spin again. What Amiga hasnt talked about is how they are going to fix the short comings of java. Well not licenseing the abi will fix one, like it or not if sun controlled all jvm's then we know the code would work on all systems. The next major pitfall of java is performance. Even with the best jvm compairing speed performance and stress testing isnt in the same leage as C or C++ compiled to a native binary. Now on super computer you might have cycles to waste on a emulation envoirment, but how many extra cycles do you think your cell phone will have. THere is one other amiga option which is you compile a seperate binary for each supported platform, then the binary loader picks its correct code. This sounds insane, but your makeing the trade off of size complexity for speed complexity, as big drives and ram prices fall, this trade off might be worth it to sustain run time performance. Really I would like to see amiga take off. Actually I would like to see several OS's develop and used by the general public, M$ is slow, fat and stupid ( which is no way to go through life) and I think some of these other os developers are a bit more hungry and willing to put in the effort to develop the best possible envoirment. Before I can get behind Amiga (again), I want to see a clear plan of the future, I want to know how they plan to solve real world problems, before the marketoids get behind a project the engineers have to sign off on it first. Amiga needs to stop putting out market buzz and start talking about cold hard facts, problems and solutions so us engineers can hold them up and say "Look these guys have something, and you marketoid morons should take a look"
After sucking on some FreshMeat(TM)
I found
this link. Dont know how long it will be around Mirror soon, mirror often!. It doesn't look as cool a nice C daemon but I'm you perl coders will get a chubby over it.
ZD net , that GREAT impartial tech news site is now supporting decss.
Tooling around on the zd page (I have spair time, i use linux). I found this link. It seems they have the descrable code on their webpage. Wow, those are really some cool, hip guys.
Iv had just about the same problem or similar problem in San Diego. We have had great service from our local isp and decided to take them up on the DSL offer. They contract everything out to a third party, several companies/contracts/service providers later, you get to Pac Bell, Once they give you a clean pair, not telling if any of the diffrent people you have to deal with along the way have any idea on what they are supposed to do. We have seen several confused faces run around the house, pull apart phone jacks, then just bail and schedule work from another company. I would like to stay with my local ISP, but it looks like if you use the telco all the way atleast you work with one company. Most of the ISP's dont seem to offer much better pricing for service might as well just suck it up and stick with your local baby bell. I does leave a bad taste in mouth to see this them control this so well, while other companies have such a hard time to compete.
Ok, this is just SIlly, since when is linux and freeBSD NOT mainstream? What needs to happen for these os's to become 'main stream'. The press release was very offensive, and if the engineers at apple 'get it' maybe they should explain it to marketing becouse they 'dont get it' , making false statements, missleading statments, and inventing things is not acceptable in OSS circles. They need to know spreads marketese rumors will only discredit their project in the long run, they are no longer speaking to mindless teachers / graphic artist that were forced in to alegiance with apple, rather people that choose to work/use darwin.
At my school we are using Linux for our OS class now. We tweeked the RT scheduler , and added a new type instead of just FIFO, it was similuar, but did allowed jobs to be prioritezed before they started excuting. Starting with the proc entry was a good place to get going from. The device Driver was also a very good project. The device driver we impletmted was just a message queue. IE a/dev/msg entry where you would open the device, write some string, and it was stored in the kernel, Then reads on the device would return the messages in the same order. Good Project. For the final project we are working on a file system. They dont think we can code well enough so its all similuated in user space, but hey Im gunna wedge into the kernel cause thats just uber cool. I would also recomend groups of 2 students, try and give 1 - 2 weeks for each project, and then do the filesystem last, give 4 weeks, and make it kernel space.
Here is a good idea.. buy a new iBook.. and slap PPClinux on it of course.. Then paint it pink on the inside.. then maybe a nice *earthy* flesh tone on the outside.. then attach hair to both the top and bottem half's but most jut around the outside edge. Hey.. they they gave us a Clam shape.. how far away was the bearded clam book?
Also... why is there a VA post on the is story column?. It makes no sense. I thought the merger wasnt going to affect much.. guess we are seeing th begining of the end. I fear if this is the beginnig.. what will the end be?
Well Since all the other UC's were chiming in I thought we should too. In almost all of our EE and CS labs we run dual boot systems Linux/NT. Lower division students tend to be more familure with NT and prefer it at first. Upperdivsion and grad students by far prefer any unix line varient over NT. As for classes being taught in unix all but the first intro C/C++ class is taught with gcc/ g++ / gmake / gdb in RedHat linux. Oh well I guess they teach intro to computer IE "this is a mouse" in NT but CS/EE's arent allowed to take it. On the systems staff we use a slightly modified version of Redhat 6.1 moslty to fit in with nis/nis+ better. As for real world demand, when you tell a recruiter that you know NT they smile..when you tell them you have been developing on linux the last 4 years they got about a dozen questions usally followed by a offer. Now I will admitt our program has a few wholes.. mostly the kids arnt exposed to gui programming very well..and most will give you a blank stair when you say MFC.. but if you asked for a threaded database they would be able to crank it out at light speed. To further prove how much we use linux our Operating Systems class is tought with the linux kernel. We use vmware to boot our test kernels, yes vmware running IN linux to boot linux.. as we develop in the native install. We are split. Linux was rather good on the x86 machines.. but we have moved to solaris for more stabilty/security.. yes one month uptimes werent long enough. So if you want to live between LA, San Diego, and Big Bear.. and if you want to real unix/linux platform development UCR is a good choice.
I Forgot my password.. I have SO many to remember these days.. How about this.. Lets have one password for all the great slashdot readers.. lets make it somthing orginal. like cypherpunks and maybe the email could be root@slashdot.org and we will promise to only listen to the music for wich we barrowed CD's from our friends.. and unlocked. Good thing NO ONE works at a Sam Goodey or Maybe a Tower Record and has access to PC and alot of spare time or really extended breaks.. thats. I promise not to abuse the slashdot account.. and I know you wont either..
nudge.. nudge.. wink wink...2 winks are better than a nudge ay ay ay
Kevin should just tell them its not encrypted. but Reall just raw sample data from some experiment. What are they going to do.. say its something else..wouldnt it be there problem to prove it really was that something else.
Then get paid for documentation. We all hate writing docs.. but there is money in it. I think Ill buy a copy of QuakeIII just cause they opened up Quake1. Good of ID to see that they arent going to make any real money from selling quake1 and the best thing to do was to open it and make the world a better place. I wonder what new games will come from the engine.
This is just a Joke Wow look they must have computers do *easy* that even a 3year old can use them. Well I dont want any computer manufactured for the 3year old target audiance, Hell lego mind storms arnt for 3year olds. I this just a great study in how any monkey can use a mouse.
