Yes yes, wonderful hack of a vms kernel. Just point, click, drool, and reboot you way along. Its morons like you that help me keep my stress level down. What an endless supply of matrial to chuckle over.
Ya, I was running my linux server for the last 3 years, its rebooted about that many times. Im afraid the registry is going to hell, if I could only find it. Keep choosing M$, I hope you never figure out the standard C api, and live forever in C++ lala land. At least that way you can take those low paying jobs, and keep the recruiters from spaming me with such jobs.
The less people that find the one true path, the less likely it will ever have a traffic jam
Disney runs their audio over ethernet. I suspect you should be able to pump audio, lighting, and normal network traffic all over ethernet. It may take a little hacking, but I hear there is a unix like OS wich will allow you to spit anything you like over the wire. Really the problem is building the embeded computers that are connected to the speakers. X10 is good, and I have used it, but it can cause havoc with many consumer devices that dont expect the volatage to change. I think X10 for lighting, everything else over ethernet.
While they may be ignoreing you for other reasons, they do bring up valid points. Appletalk is just horrible. It is very chatty, not only that many mac applications search out the network for other running instances to handle licensing issues. Its a mess. As for security, thats most of the time user error. Macs arnt any more inhernitnly insecure then the wintel box, but the people who tend to use macs arnt the most tech savvy and often do very dump ass things with the 'chooser'.
All of these problems can be handled. Network admins dont trust the macs then have them assign you ips from your DMZ. That way your mac has no more privilages then someone machine on the outside. If they cant figure that out, fire them. Its not worth keeping people dont know how to do their job. Remember they are the ones imposing the problem that macs cant be on the network.
I will be the first to re take the SAT test with the answers inlayed into the question form. Dont mind those Coke Bottle Bottem Glasses, I need them to uhh.. read.
1 dollar to first script kiddie that figures out how to squeeze a nice backoriface installer into a 'ILoveYou' variant. I think MS wont fix anything until their back is against the wall. It used to be that full discloser would scare a company enough to plug the bugs, I guess with MS its not only going to take an example, but rather a worst case app to drive home the point.
Damn, Palm just cant compete. The Visor Edge look better, will most likly be cheaper, and has a larger expansion slot, eg cell phone or Camera, looks palm only wants to accept mmc's so thats ram or rom, but no new functionality. I hope they make there money in licensing the OS, or they are going under.
I have a visor, and I have never performed a 'transaction'. I have never connected it to a communication device Other then the base to perform a backup/restore Or use the IR port to beam software. It seems this would only apply to the products that use commuincation devices such as cellphones or wireless, but even then you should have to show that a transaction occurs. Server push isnt a transaction.. several other things are not transactions. Even if they could prove they are infringing its not as wide spread as NCR would like, I also have a feeling prior art may be possible.
I hole hartly disagree. This proves that the lawenforcement can not be trusted to fire the weapon in safely. Rather it proves that law enforcement choosed to shoot first then ask questions, rather when you choose to be part of law enforcement team you must go the further to prove that your actions are justified, not implied. I was wondering when the napster arguement would finally discover that they have no way to *PROVE* those songs are what they say they are. Just becouse some band releases a song Im not allowed to name a file on my computer by a similar name? What if I wrote an essay for school about Metallica? I can not title the document file metallica.doc ? I suspect this software would hold me in violation. Name doenst prove content. Maybe people should remember you cant judge a book by its cover.
ps. no one has commented on dilution. If setup millions of fake accounts with bogus metallica songs napster will linke to them all, then we allow the users to filter them out with new patened audio -> orgranic translation devices, Hide the Trees' in a forrest
news.cnet.com also has an interview with Alich. That is damn hillarius. He must have said " I love" about 20 times. " I love devices", "I love XP", " I love win200" , " I love lin... err "
It was great to hear that Windows 2000 was a perfect launch, and has done better then they expected... hmm. to bad they told the SEC a differnt story. Cnet needs to get some better interviewers, I mean The ammount of crap this guy was shovling, he was standing up there with a snow shovel, and that damn intreviewer was just sitting there with his mouth open. If the M$ winnies are going to take to the air waves we need to have someone that will call them on their shit, and not turn interviews into commercials.
But stoping the popup bombs, let me be the first to say Thank you Jesus You can now stop popups, the one and only hack that I wanted to see come from open source mozilla and its finally in the tree. Kick Ass, read about it at Here
If you login as root, you deserve what you get. Every unix books says the first thing after install is to make your self a regular user account so you dont break shit. I guess you missed that chapter. It with almost no access control on the file system, complete lack of control of the memory map it is excatly the design of the OS that allows Virii to live. If we all used a proper access controls it would be almost impossible for a virus to spread. Of course this doesnt solve the macro virus/trojan problem, but hell if you your going to allow scripting/virtual machines to be a apart of a application you need to sandbox it, MS has yet to learn this.
Why do you need to have write access to word.exe, How often do you edit the binary? But you still have the ablitity to infect it. I would suggest that almost all of the excutables that get edited are from virii, upgrades and patches almost always just replace the entire file.
By design its difficult to spread a virus on unix. Most people that use unix arnt sitting at a root prompt.
Platform diveristy also hampers virii in unix. binary only virii, need to be compiled for the correct platfrom, *ix runs on several differnt platforms most unix shops use so many differnt versions that propgation would be difficult.
Not only a differnt binary but differnt file system layout, virii cant even make accurate assuptions about the file system layout if were to edit configuration data.
Writing a virus for unix is alot harder, then pile on top the difficulty in propgation, its a first step in solving this problem which MS keeps going just to keep an industry alive.
The whole argument not to fix windows or scrap it all toghter feels alot like the argument for parking enforcment. We pay to park, so some rent-a-cop can come buy and make sure we paid. Why not fire the cop, and make parking free?
Why not Kill windows, and watch the virus protection market die also
Also I wonder how many virii you have written. I have written them for dos/windows/macos and attempted a few for solaris/irix/linux. Real world test prove the unix virii are much less successful.
It seems to me that the reason we still are talking about virii is that MS still doesnt know how to write an OS that controls permissions. How many people have been hit by a virus on a *ix system ? Worse case is you dork your own files, but the chance of it spreading are far and few between. I mean in the last ten years you can count the number of virii/worms/trojans for *ix on one hand. Yet it seems that a new virus for an MS product comes out daily if not hourly. This leads me to suspect that even if MS could write a real OS they wouldnt. It would negate the virus scanning software market. How much money would Symantec loose if MS could write a real OS?. What ever the cost of a virus it should be charged to the developer of the application. Im sure the unix people have no problem with the cost wouldnt mean much, but in the MS world the numbers would hit the moon. It seems that we are artificialy producing an market segment. How many people will be pissed off when they learn that the only reason we are talking about virii is becouse MS is a full of a bunch of tards?
We are the Cochroaches of technology. We were here before the vc's, dotcoms, and all the other hoopla, and we will be here after they leave. Just as MS claims Linux will fail, *BSD is 20 year old technology, does matter We are the cochroach. We watch rulers come and go, empires rise and fall, Mountians rise up, seas fall, and in the end we are still here.
This is a good article, but the writer misses a next logical step. Counterfit information. If we as members of the market counterfit information (make crap up) then we are polluting the informatio market. Once the information collectors have no easy way to determine if the information is valid or invalid the collected information can not be used for analysis. We must all do our part to destroy these databases which belive they are entitled to our information. GO to nytimes and register with fake information. Delete your cookies and repeat.

OS X on x86?

I work in the valley. I have several friends that work around in the valley, while none work directly for apple several work with companies that are very close to apple Names left out
to protect the innocent
Rumor has it that Apple already has compiled a good part of the MacOSX code on intel. There are several reasons apple migth start selling X86 versions. Apple has alot of supply problems with G[34]'s in the past. A few of the darwin developers are supposedly modeling development after FreeBSD which as well all know is X86 optimized.
There are several reasons why
apple would not sell an X86 port. First Apple is a Hardware Company, their OS ran on other hardware it would hurt their mac sales. Second they have spent alot of money and time trying to convince everyone that G[34]'s are better then X86 chips hands down.
So what will happen? Apple will most likly spend a ton of money porting the whole OS, getting all of the binaries ready to go, just to scrap the whole project once they figure out they are a hardware company again. bah they will never learn.
A good choice would be warcraft. The differnt races have a 1-1 comparison. So for each unit with X abilties on the Humans Side as an exact conterpart Y for the orcs. Since stratgey is what your testing, mindles shooters wont work, there will be a learning curve with any RTS. I think picking one where stuff like your choice of race doesnt change would be a good thing.
All these affect boil down to Math on a Stream. Now. All we need to do is write this as a simple touring machine, Then all we do is give each machine a chunk of the stream (tape) to work on, ad the proper function (engine) and simply splice the stream (tape) back toghter and your cool.
To quote Chris Rock " You can drive a car with your feet, it doesnt mean its to be done". Sure Lilo Works, but my biggest drawback is that you must have the choosen before you boot. Lets say You have only one machine ( yes some people are poor ) and its older, so the floopy drive is terriably unreilable (most are). So you download the latest and greatest kernel, compile it and copy it to/boot, well then you do something stupid and remove your old kernel option, and Replace it with the new kernel. And lets say You having a very bad day and you compile the kernel lets say without ATA/IDE support. Now You reboot, try and load the new kenrel, oops no root disk. Your screwed. Well whipout your boot floopy, wait this floppy hasnt been used in 18months, blowing the dust of it, hoping for the best, Ooopy is dead. So now I have this boot loader, and if I coud ONLY point it to a kernel at boot instead of before boot, then everything would be cool, Becouse my old kernel is sitting on the HD, ready to bring the system back to life but There isnt a lilo option for it. In freebsd, I never have to worry about needing a boot disk, the loader will load any kernel on the file system. This is a bigger problem your using a machine that doesnt other devices to boot from then a HD, Such as some laptops or smaller devices.
I forgot to mention Milo. the MiniLoader is for Alpha linux (I also happen to own a alpha). Milo is alow a much better loader then lilo. Milo gets you the most important part of grub, being able to navigate partions to find a kernel, then boot the kernel. What about a X86 Port of milo, sure as stop gap until grub is more stable. I dont know what the best loader is, but I do know it isnt Lilo, the next time I see a "LI" hanging promp , that boot block is going to get UpGraded!
Java has its own windowing thats part of the virtual machine class distribution. Yes the browser can embed these windows into the browser app, how we often see java on the web. But just allows the java app to appear as part of the html page. Really the java app is using a windowing api than stand on its own, and doesnt need the browser. Your a little backwards. There is more work going on to embed those java windows into the html page, then if you were to run the java code in a started Vitural Machine.
How many applications interface directly with the kernel in such a way that if the kernel work is done it breaks API/ABI ? This is not a LINUX problem this is what you get when you use x11 toolkits that are under heavy development. This is a strong reason why SDL is used by loki. Every notice how the same Netscape works on almost kerenel minor number as long as major is correct, and how many people change from libc5 to glibc on a whim? Netscape works because they staticly compiled in motif. If you want compatiblaty staticly compile in your X11 tool kit. I dont want to see the pace of development slowed down just so some moron can use shared librarys. Screw them, we dont need the application anyways. Oh by they way if they would distribute source why would it matter??... ooops closed source Im sorry, you dont get to play

DOS is there becouse Windows has 8 and 16 bit code laying around in it still. Also some of the Windows API's still fall through to dos stuff.
