Maybe Lincoln should have appeased the Confederates then, eh? Who cares if people are held in chattel slavery, as long as we can sit down and talk with the slave holders.
And Neville Chamberlain, now there was a guy who knew the power of negotiations...
You people never learn. Some people just need killing, and it is so much better and more humane for the world in the long run if we just hold our noses and do it.
you help turn it into a "war" instead of letting society focus on solving the root causes.
Bollocks to root causes. Bin Laden and his cohorts are not poor, uneducated men. There is only one root cause as far as they are concerned, and that is our failure to adopt Islam. They've said so repeatedly.
Why the fuck would someone post such racist filth under their real account?
I post stuff like this all the time and I have excellent karma. Seems like a lot of people secretly agree with me and give me mod points. Yay for the fascists.
And why do you feel the need to post anonymously? Are you that unsure of your opinions?
Pitiful lefties, your day has come and gone. The world is a cruel hard place, always has been, always will be. Every enlightened and humane and pleasant thing you enjoy in Western Civilization was a gift to you from armed, violent men who even now stand watch over you ungrateful wretches.
How long do you think homosexuals and feminists and Chomskyites would last under a Muslim Caliphate? I'm pretty hard right, it is true, but I am willing to tolerate you and even take some pleasure from saying deliberately inflammatory things so I can argue with you. But I'm not willing to stand by and watch two thousand years of civilization destroyed by the Mahometan fiends.
Words like "racist" and "fascist" have lost all their sting, having been applied to everyone to the right of Tony Benn for the past generation. Answer my arguments instead of calling me names.
For a start who are 'The Islamists'? This sounds like a whole people that you are stereotyping under one label.
The Wahabbi/Salafi school of Sunni Muslims, in particular. We should be targeting the most radical imams for execution or imprisonment, destroying their mosques and madrassas, and deporting their members by the tens of thousands. This is war and it's time we treated it as such.
scaremongering about relative birthrates and how this means that we'll end up under Muslim domination.
Sneer all you want, chum. It doesn't change the likelihood that your grandchildren will either have to kill many Muslims, or become Muslim themselves.
You sound like a fully paid up member of the BNP
That is an example of the logical fallacy of reductio ad Hitlerum. It does not address the truth or falsity of my assertions.
American emperialism is not limited to the middle east, nor did it start with this administration.
Even granting such a thing exists, which I do not, how is this relevant to my point about the radical Islamists harboring grievances that are five centuries old? Do you think discussions or appeasement have any place when dealing with such people? In their words, "We are not trying to negotiate with you. We are trying to destroy you."
out of over 1 billion muslim worldwide, how many are terrorists?
Of course they are not all terrorists. However, the incidence is surely much greater than among Irishmen or Montanans, intolerably high in my opinion. Sorry the rest of the Religion of Peace has to suffer for the actions of a few, but that is not my concern.
What percentage would you tolerate before agreeing that allowing further Muslim immigration into the West is a mistake? 1%? 10%? 50%? Everybody needs to ask themselves this question before calling me a racist.
It's a difference of degree and not of kind. Suppose you knew that 50% of Muslim immigrants were planning to set off bombs in the Tube, but you couldn't really tell which 50%. Would your precious liberal multi-cultural pieties make you meekly accept this? I don't think so.
Thomas Friedman made the same point in the New York Times just the other day. The time is coming when the nations of the West will make no distinction between peaceful Muslims and the head-choppers. All of them will be quarantined to their own countries.
They harbor bitter resentment about the Balfour Declaration and Sykes-Picot Agreement and the fall of the Ottoman Empire, dating back 80 years or more.
They planned the September 11 attacks long before Bush ever came to power, at a time when the American military was fighting Christian Serbs to protect Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo.
The Islamists have made it abundantly clear that they will not stop fighting jihad until the whole world lives under a Muslim caliphate.
There is no reasoning with such people. We kill them, or they will surely kill us. Now they have nuclear weapons in Pakistan and are on the verge of obtaining them in Iran. Next time they attack London, there could be a hundred thousand casualties rather than 50.
And with the relative birth rates of Muslims vs. the native populations of Europe, the time is rapidly approaching when Europe will have to decide whether to submit to Sharia law, or expel their Muslim population by force. I'm not kidding. Italian and French women are having 1.2 babies per lifetime, while Muslim women in the same countries are brood mares producing five or six little jihadis each. Demography is destiny, and there is no third option.
we Americans seem to have a total lack of understanding of the basic rules of polite driving and the physics of motion... It's stupid. It's pigheaded... and, perhaps because we ARE still a pretty young society, it's adolescent.
If you think that Americans are the worst offenders in this regard, you need to travel a little bit more. I've driven on the Italian autostrada and believe me, there is no road so scary in this whole country. Driving in Rome itself was even worse. Maybe it's because theirs is such an OLD society? and getting senile...?
You're a jerk. Way to belittle some poor girl's hopes and dreams. How do you know she'll not be a better lawyer, one who truly helps people? Keep your mouth shut next time.
Trust me, I was being restrained. Dirty filthy fucking pirates, I hate their guts. I'd write my kids out of my will if they went to law school. They have been a scourge on mankind since the days of the scribes and Pharisees.
Under the Geneva Convention, every one of the unlawful combatants held at Gitmo could be summarily executed on the spot after their capture. I wish they would, actually, if it weren't for the intelligence value that might be lost.
Why aren't we helping the areas that are even MORE broken than Iraq but would cost less to fix? Oh, right, oil.
We were involved in Bosnia and Kosovo, at the cost of many American lives and billions of American dollars, while the pusillanimous Europeans turned their back on the suffering. . . No oil there.
We evacuated civilians from dozens of nations from any number of African shit holes during their many revolutions over the past twenty years. . . No oil there.
We were in Aceh shortly after the tsunami. Our military field hospitals were doing operations in knee-deep muck by the light of propane lanterns, and our choppers were dropping MREs and bottled water over hundreds of miles of coastline, days before Kofi Annan swanned into the Jakarta Hilton. While he and the feckless NGOs and UN agencies were holding task force meetings and press conferences, our boys were sweating and bleeding out in the field, saving the lives of bloodthirsty Muslim fiends who a week previously would have gladly beheaded them all. . . No oil there.
No oil in Somalia. No oil in Haiti. Just hopeless suffering people under the thumb of despotic governments, crying out for freedom and security. Some thanks we got for trying our best to help!
No oil in Vietnam. No oil in Korea. And we didn't get much in the way of oil out of either of the World Wars.
Sophisticated, cowardly, jaded Europeans, in their pampered, self-centered cynicism, do not believe anyone could truly go to war to relieve the suffering of others. They see no imperative to spread the blessings of free markets and democratic self-government, as they have themselves lost faith in it. They observe the corruption and lack of principle in their own governments, and project the same venality on the American government and military. They are craven fools. They will soon be living under Sharia law if they do not change.
I proudly acknowledge that the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are being done in my name and with my tax dollars. I believe that they will succeed, and that future generations will remember them with favor.
Many more such operations will be necessary if civilization is to survive. When possible they will be humanitarian in nature, to relieve suffering directly and spread good will towards our nation. When this is not possible, military force will be used to prevent the suffering of millions under collectivist tyranny or medieval religious fanaticism or nuclear terrorism.
We'll hit hard in the interests of our country, and we won't apologize to anyone. We'll laugh in the face of multi-culti asswipes who think that some people are unfit for free-market democracy. We won't ask permission from quavering intellectuals, or bickering diplomats, or corrupt dictators. Get used to it. This is just the beginning. The world has changed forever. We are going to sweep away the debris of millennia.
France would help, but their storm troops are all engaged right now in the Ivory Coast.
Yeah, that's pretty rich, isn't it? The French are a veritable fountain of sneers and scathing comments when it comes to 'cowboy' Bush, yet they are down in the Côte d'Ivoire uninvited, shooting the local black people to protect the interests of white French cocoa growers.
UN is not some strange foreign country but more like a democratic assembly.
Ha! Are you crazy? It's got nothing to do with democracy. It's a club where dictators and despots get to pretend they have the same sovereign legitimacy as the democratically elected governments of the civilized world.
I care nothing for the opinion of the Sudanese or Libyan or Cuban government on any topic. Their representatives should have no seat in the UN.
The speed limit is there for a reason - it's a safe speed to drive. If you disagree, don't blame the people following the law. Take it to whatever legislative body sets the numbers.
I have a friend who is a civil engineer, and he says the best way to set speed limits is to take all the signs down and measure the speed of a thousand cars passing by, then set the speed limit a standard deviation above the median.
Slowpokes cause a great many accidents. The speed at which the majority of people drive is by definition the safest.
The answer is social opprobrium. The daughter of an acquaintance announced her intention to go to law school when she graduates college in a couple of years. I am afraid I was so scathing as to make her cry. But maybe she will reconsider going into such a low and deceitful and filthy "profession".
I think the reason he is seen as a giant of science is because he was not straightjacketed by orthodoxy.
There are different types of challenges to scientific orthodoxy. Though we are not omniscient, our understanding of the world advances ever closer to perfection. Some challengers to scientific orthodoxy are far more wrong than others.
Asimov used the example of the shape of the earth, as understood over the centuries, to illustrate this:
The man who said the earth was a flat disc spinning in space was wrong, but not as wrong as the man who said it was the shell of a giant tortoise standing on elephants.
The man who said it was a sphere was wrong, but not as wrong as the flat-disc guy.
The man who said it was an oblate spheroid was wrong, but not as wrong as the fellow who said it was a sphere.
The man who said it was almost an oblate spheroid with a few little bulges here and there, and described them in a scientific paper wih measurements accurate to within a meter or so, is still wrong, but not as wrong as all who have gone before him.
So Einstein's special relativity approximates to Newton's laws of motion when v is much less than c. The quantum model of the atom approximates to Bohr's model of the atom in every high school chemistry lab. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle applies to every mass, but is unmeasurably small except on the scale of electrons and photons and quarks.
All the great challenges to scientific orthodoxy, for all their brilliance and insight, give results comparable to accepted orthodox wisdom except at the extremes of measurement. If someone makes a claim that does not fit this pattern, he can safely be dismissed as a crank or charlatan.
Newton was a genius when it came to mathematics and physics, and a deluded fool when it came to chemistry. These are not mutually exclusive propositions.

Look here, you braying jackass. As long as these people are not shot dead in the street or pushed out of helicopters over the ocean, I'll laugh in the face of you or anyone else who tells me free speech is under attack.
I'm not aware of any other nation, anywhere, any time, that has been so forgiving of such vicious sedition. We are so magnanimous and tolerant in our strength that we allow filthy little termites like these to teach in our colleges, when in practically any other time and place in human history the vermin would be lucky to continue to draw breath. Got it?
Soon people will be afraid to even speak for fear of being locked up... remember when people used to laugh about the old USSR and how people there would be locked up for speaking about something, remember nazi germany when neighbours would just "vanish" overnight, never to be seen again.
You totally misunderstand the nature of the problem. Mr. Cohen is in no danger of being locked up for anything, least of all his expressed opinion on digital piracy. Your accusations are laughably unfounded.
The crux of Mr. Cohen's problem is that the U.S. Supreme Court recently decided that individuals or corporations which produce software that is deliberately intended to be used for piracy are liable in civil court for their actions. That is, they may be sued by industry organizations like the RIAA or BSA, and made to pay financial compensation for contributing to software or music piracy, but only if there is proof of intent to evade the law. Hence Mr. Cohen's predicament, as this old document from his Web site seems pretty clearly to show such an intent. The only question is whether it is admissible in court.
This is not a criminal case, and in fact there is not even any criminal statute under which he could possibly be charged, unless he himself actually downloaded pirate copies of music or software.
American citizens, this is why the rest of the world has problems with your country.
How comical. You equate us with the Soviets and Nazis on a mere shoestring of ill-informed speculation and conjecture. It's obvious that you have not the slightest idea what you are talking about.
A visit to any American college campus or anti-war rally would show you that even the most robust and controversial free speech is in no danger whatsoever in this country. I am sure that freedom of speech is safer in America than in Europe and Canada, where you certainly can be locked up for speaking your sincerely held opinions about race relations or homosexuality.
Americans are said to be ignorant about the rest of the world, but it seems clear that's a two-way street.
If you parse the parent, you would notice that he/she is decrying the lassez-faire attitude of the current administration vis-a-vis monopolists in general, rather than its explicit support of the various parts of the entertainment industry.
I have parsed the parent, and I do not see the slightest scrap of evidence to support your assertion. It is yet more flatulent rubbish from the ignorant Left.
No wonder we fascist hyenas are kicking your asses all over the country. We are evil geniuses in sharp suits, and you are pathetic deluded simpletons in blond dreadlocks.
You are sick and twisted and conservative ideology has strangled your mind. I wouldn't even know where to start with your immoral rant.
Why did you bother to post? Your response is totally devoid of fact or logical argument. It's mere name-calling.
I'm totally in agreement with the original post, by the way. So-called "poor" people in this country live better than 95% of the world's population. They are typically fat as hogs, and spend their days watching TV in government-provided air-conditioned housing. They don't deserve even one more dime of tax money from me.
That wasn't me. I always post under my own account.
