iTunes 4.9 With Podcasting Support
eakthecat writes "Hot on the heels of the 4.8 release, Apple has released the next version of its popular iTunes jukebox software. Version 4.9 incorporates several new features, most notable of which is podcasting. The front page and iTunes webpages have not been updated yet, but you can get your greedy little hands on it or through the new podcasting link in the music store! !"
I'm sure I'm going to be asked to turn in my "geek card", but just what the hell IS "podcasting" anyhow? (n.b.: I do not own an iPod, nor do I own a clone thereof)
With spending like this, exactly what are "conservatives" conserving?
The iTunes Music Store has "Mac-dotted" themselves. After getting 49, I tried to download some podcasts but the store that can serve up hundreds of millions of tracks is a bit overwhelmed right now. Try again later.
In other news, Apple also modified its iPod line by removing the iPod Photo as a unique line:
20GB COLOR iPod $299
60GB color iPod $399
1GB Shuffle $129
I only came here to do two things; kick some ass, and drink some beer...looks like we're almost out of beer.
Is anyone else annoyed that their is no real Windows "updater" for iTunes, and each update basically requires iTunes to reinstall, sometimes clobbering my settings that tell Quicktime to stop bothering me?
I really wish that if Apple releases software for Windows that they actually put the work necessary into it to make it a good product. (Don't get me wrong, I still like iTunes, it just seems very unpolished in Windows).
Ouch!
Can someone explain why this is a waste of bandwidth and time? Wouldn't a major company with a massive userbase supporting podcasting actually help the genre?
Also, since (presumably) Rob hasn't actually *tried* the software, isn't judging it a little harsh?
Has the "advanced configuration" also been revamped? You see, in the previous versions, what was available in the advanced options was just an option of choosing what columns are displayed! This to me, was a non-starter.
They must envision an economic model for podcasting one day, similar to their iTunes store I'm guessing, it'll be interesting to see how this develops.
It is legal to reverse engineer for compatibility if you don't have inside information. It is not ok if you do. It is sad, but a good move for Apple.
RIP DRM Free iTunes, Viva allofmp3 .
The Good:
;).
Rather nicely done. A good interface, the search function works, and the display is very iTunes-ish - to be honest, better than using iPodderX or NetNewsWire to import the songs, and you can add in custom feeds.
I like the ability to tell it "Keep the most recent X and dump the rest" - for news based Podcasts, I usually have to do that manually with listened ones. Now, once I listen to it, it will automatically be taken out. Sweet.
The Bad:
No built in support for turning MP3 to bookmarkable AAC's. I don't see any kind of support for video podcasts (such as Rocketboom, which is odd since iPodderX can export the videos to iTunes, perhaps in support for a (someday) future video iPod).
Otherwise, it's a nice addition, and it's going to be interesting to see where it goes. Kudos to Apple for getting it - now let's see how long it takes the Napster and Rhapsody folks to catch on
52 Weeks, 52 Religions with John Hummel
Anyone that hasn't already should check out Leo Leportes podcast called TWIT. It is a group of former "The Screen Savers" employees that do a weekly podcast for all the geeks out there.
It feels way snappier than the last release.
Adam Curry (yes that guy from MTV) is the father of Podcasting and as such he gave the keynote speech at Gnomedex this past weekend. The full keynote is also one of his many podcasts.
(Ok, if you don't know a podcast is basically an audio file. The term originates from the idea of Broadcasting and the iPod. The idea is take your content with you and listen when you want. The CBC has some of their radio content available as a podcast. So the concept is catching on!)
This keynote is well worth the listen. It is motivational, and it is focused. Users demand content and they don't care how the delivery method works (ATOM, RSS, etc). For the rest of the speech, go over to Adam's site for a link to the audio file. Listen, enjoy, and think about what he has to say.

This is what i love about apple. They see the customers need and they execute simple as that.
Life is like a bag of chips you never know whats next

I'm also downloading a new iPod updater which is supposed to add Podcast support to "iPod with color display," "iPod with Click Wheel," and "iPod mini." Looks like the 3G series has reached its end-of-life as far as support goes.
For more information, click here.
I agree with the lack of built-in support for turning MP3 to bookmarkable. I'll keep using iPodderx for the moment. Regarding your remark "I don't see any kind of support for video podcasts ", macbidouille.com http://www.macbidouille.com/niouzcontenu.php?date= 2005-06-28#11209 mentions that iTunes 4.9 has a reference to "VideosParty". Maybe this will be in release 5.0?
Rubies and Pearls are not what you think.
I think, technically speaking, it's as good an implementation as you're likely to see for a while.
The only missed opportunity from my perspective is the lack of some peer-to-peer method of distribution of the podcasts. That would be awfully nice. As it is, if your podcast gets popular, you're going to have to contend with a hefty bandwidth fee, which leaves at least a vestige of the old-media power structure in place; those who have the bucks control the means of distribution. With a stripped-down BitTorrent or even a Gnutella-style "swarm" distribution model, your listeners could actually distribute your podcasts for you; truly listener-supported public radio.
Otherwise, good stuff. More nice work by the iTunes team.

This is getting worse than trying to track a Gnome library ;-)
Perhaps more interesting.. there is also an ipod update available!
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
This means that your podcasts will FINALLY be organised on your ipod, and your ipod will treat it like an audio book: press pause, come back later and it remembers where you are!
Short of the vbs examples that Apple provide, does anyone know of any decent links/documentation on accessing and manipulating track data using Visual Basic?
With this kind of information, accessing and manipulating the music files would be easier and allow of a greater range of functionality outside of iTunes, the advantage of VB would that a basic frontend could be knocked up in a couple of hours - but there doesn't seem to be much help out there.
Any suggestions?
Avantslash - View Slashdot cleanly on your mobile phone.
I think this is absolutely zippy. Though what I have to wonder about is this: Isn't Apple going through/finishing a patent violation suit already? I've heard of a few cases attempting to get their way into the courts for podcasts' ability to distribute copyrighted material (see also: BetaMAX circa-way too damn long ago for this to still be an issue). I wonder if anyone will try to raise hell against Apple for 'built in piracy abilities'
:)
I realize that such claims may not always be legitimate, but neither are half of the lawsuits out there. Stride confidently, but still carry a big stick.
But until any of that mess ever happens (if it ever does) I'm happy with this. It's one more integrated media component until mac releases its intel machines, and I'll get one of those

The podcasting support in iTunes is awesome. The only real issue I have with it is the inability to navigate through the directory like you can with the regular music library. For example, when you choose the topic "Technology", you get into the full 3 pane browse view, where you can't go back to the main page through their breadcrumb-button feature. Once they get the navigation ironed out, this is going to be really nice. I've already downloaded a metric assload of podcasts, and am contentedly listening to them right now.
- Going to a category subsection of the podcast list on the iTunes Music Store results in a browser window that lists genres, yet clicking any genre goes back to music listings, without any way to return. Podcast genres are in fact listed under the "Artist" column, and podcast titles under "Album".
- There is now a subgenre column in the iTMS browser, which could be helpful if I could find any way to read or set the subgenres of music I already own.
- The "All" item sometimes disappears from the top of the Artist column, meaning that you have to change genre/subgenre in order to change artist.
- There are "[x>" icons beside some podcasts which aren't explained (though they could just be part of the feed name).
iPod/iTunes's strength is partly in its simplicity - it's a good app for many people's music archival and retrieval needs. Perhaps it's being pushed to do too much? Some of the recent additions such as photo browsing (which can't be anything but mediocre on a 2" screen) and the new podcasting facilities might be better suited to a different GUI rather than being shoehorned into the existing ones. I love the idea of Podcasting in iTunes, but it's different enough from album browsing to warrant a bit more GUI work.I felt the same way about MacOS X Tiger's slightly premature release - although it was quickly improved with updates, the "release as beta, fix afterwards" approach is one I'd come to expect more from one of Apple's chief competitors. I hope Apple don't continue down this path - their software has often been a comparative joy to use, and these annoyances reduce that enjoyment.

BadApple Plug-in for iTunes Podcasts
At some point, Apple is going to add explicit support for podcasts to iTunes. Podcasts are really only long, often dull sound files, the 21st century equivalent of talk radio on cassette. Still, it's a fad, and since iTunes lets you look you for streaming broadcasts, why not podcasts, too? At least, so think the anonymous folks behind BadFruit, an outfit that just released the BadApple iTunes plug-in, ironically for the Windows version of iTunes only. The plug-in adds another link, called Podcasts, to the main iTunes window. Click on the link and you get a list of podcast categories. Drill down to download specific podcasts in iTunes and use them as you would any other iTunes sound file. BadApple claims to be pre-emptive insurance against any potential limitations Apple may place on the podcasts it may offer in future versions of iTunes. CNET speculates that MP3.com founder Michael Robertson, who now has a new site called MP3Tunes.com, is the anonymous author of BadFruit.

>> Apple getting dumped by IBM is going to put a quick end to the iPod fad.
Put the drugs down and back away slowly....
hot on the heels? 4.8 was released months ago
...and that's all there is to it.
Just downloaded iTunes 4.9 to this 1999 iMac running OS X Panther and it now streams podcasts to my 1995 (Cassette only) Bose box connected with an Airport Express w/Airtunes. Amazing what you can do with Apple's software on ooooold equipment and get amazing sound quality. Now all I need is to set up a scheduler to run iTunes to wake me up in the morning with some snazzy new podcasts. This is good stuff, and the quality and functionality are impressive. Talk about breathing new life into old equipment. Yeah, the old iMac is pretty much just for (safe) web browsing and an incredibly good iTunes interface. Old iMac's are sweet deal for $100.
Mac OS X users can get the new version of iTunes quick an' easy though Software Update on the system Preferences Panel, along with a corresponding update for the iPod, if needed.
Ever dream you could fly? Get up from the Flight Sim. I Fly
Looks as if we will continue to need to use 3G iPod-Linux for recording audio at anything higher than 8kHz
Rubies and Pearls are not what you think.
Not an itunes user, just vaguely curious why Apple is releasing updates in quick succession. Is it a quick succession of Incredible New Features, or more of a quick succession to break 3rd party software compatibility, or a quick succession of bug fixes, or was "hot on the heels" something of an exaggeration, or did they just happen to release 4.8 and 4.9 quickly for no reason other than that's how it happened?
A workaround for now (on OS X):
- Set your importing preferences to AAC
- Install this Make Bookmarable Applescript
- Select the MP3, go to Advanced->Convert to AAC
- Select the newly-created AAC, run the Make Bookmarkable script on it
Finished, and you only need to do steps 1 and 2 the once, of course. I've been using this to convert BBC radio captures to bookmarkable AAC for a while (workflow: Tivo->MP3->bookmarkable AAC).would agree that making an AAC bookmarkable could do with being integrated into the main interface though.
Cheers,
Ian
This time for sure... Presto! (About 16,600 English pages for apple's demise death with Safesearch on via Google.)
Here we go again...
So does the Ipod update fix the chkdsk/firmware update failure error you can get if the ipod (mini) goes into a deep sleep? I spent all weekend fixing it. I had to reformat my ipod 5 times because I get getting errors in the middle saying it would not format. even the empty/single file playlist trick doesn't help.
Post. Of. The. Day.
Uh, gee, thanks for the random links.
Too bad you didn't bother to link to any of the juicy quotes from the IBM people talking about why they decided Apple was no longer worth the trouble for such a tiny number of chips sold per year - something like %4 of just the Fishkill plant.
Apple may or may not be dead, but they did have the rug pulled out from under them by IBM. One would have to be foaming at the mouth Apple fanatic to not have come to terms with that fact by now.
If someone at Apple tells you they are excited about the move to Intel x86, they are doing a great job of lying...
I wish there was a way I could set the Autofill feature to fill from Podcasts, like you can from certain playlists.
Oh well, I was surprised enough when I put one on my Shuffle, and then the moment I turned it on, it started up right to the Podcast.
(Don't get me wrong, I still like iTunes, it just seems very unpolished in Windows).
On OS X, the software update auto updates ALL mac software, including iTunes. Since you are using windows, well.... sorry. It may be me, but I don't think Mac really wants to get friendly with their competition operating system. There's a reason there's not Final Cut, iDVD, etc for Windows.
CNN has started offering free video for the latest news. It is a two or three minute quick update of the latest developments.
It would be supremely sweet if that was offered as a podcast and there was a video device that could play it.
I charge my iPod every night and it would be nice if it had the latest news as I pick it up and get ready for the daily commute.
Well, I guess the radio news would be good too. I'm going to have to get this for sure.
The Internet is full. Go Away!!!
I like the new podcasting features but I would like to have the ability to delete podcasts that I have listened to or that are older then N days.
That would be perfect for someone like me who downloads more podcasts then they listen to.
Wow. I can't believe they haven't released the necessary iPod update for 3rd generation podcast compatibility. This is no fun. Maybe someone will come out with a hack or something.
arl with a k - a blog of mine.

"Care to wager a beer on any of that that?"
Forget beer.
I'll wager my company's G5 PowerMac that is sitting unplugged now ready to be properly disposed of - harddrive removed and destroyed, etc.
I don't know what the fuck we were thinking wasting our time with Apple, but it is nice that the WWDC keynote put a nail in the coffin once and for all as far as we are concerned.
See ya Steve! Perhaps you have a brighter future selling sugar water?
Okay I don't own an Ipod and in fact just recently heard about podcasting myself. After doing some initial research, why isn't it called RSScasting or MP3casting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it has nothing to do with the Ipod per se.
In case anyone was wondering, Apple have not changed the DAAP authentication with this new version of iTunes. So my various iTunes apps for linux, etc still work.

called Slashdot Review: http://slashdotreview.com/wp-rss2.php
The "normal" 20GB iPod is gone from the Apple Store.
The new iPods have features like the former iPod photos (but apparently lost the "photo" part of their name), i.e. color display and photo capabilities, and in addition 15 hours of battery life and podcast support.
There are only 20GB and 60GB models, which sell for $299 and $399, respectively. The 30GB model is no more.
Do not be alarmed. This is only a test.
OK, the video DOES play, in the artwork preview pane. You can click on it for full size.
....why don't you "properly dispose" of it on ebay...
G5's haven't plummitted in value...in truth they will probably rise in value as the last / fastest way to run OS Classic.
And why exactly are you so pissy over it...its not like this hasn't been done before with apple...
Oh well your decision.
Cool. Come back and talk to us in a couple of years and tell us how you correctly predicted Apple's demise way back in 2005. Or not. Picking hardware that doesn't match your job is your fault and no one else's. Perhaps you have a bit to learn about making purchasing decisions. Or perhaps you were brainwashed by those evil marketing reps? Poor guy. Maybe you should sue them.
do the same for movies.
Apple has found the business model that everybody else skipped or did wrong.
First it was audio, then internet radio, then audio books, then "Garage Band", then they 'cross-marketed' iTunes & QuickTime. Now its pod casts (which are named after their product after all.)
Soon it will be movies. The billion dollar industry is about to get democratized with tools like the ones Apple is selling using the media channel of iTunes.
The movie makers couldn't have got a foot in a door anyway with the current ball-busting 'block buster' system but as the quality goes up, the more the **AAs will realize what they have loosed in the 'vulnerable' world. (Imagine a terrorist bomb going off in a crowded theater... Why not? Al Queda strikes at bus stops in Iraq. Anywhere people gather.)
And they're going to do it outside the **AAs as well as within. Got a book/song/movie in you? They may be your fee-charging, limited-copying communication channel.
The reason you CAN'T add a feed manually is that they want to be able to sell you the feeds. Its not like a CD which is 'the echo of dead music' PodCasts are produced and damn near live for dirt cheap.
They're what's happening, baby... And if you don't want to be square, you go there.
And the **AAs don't get to say squat.
MSBPodcast.com The opinions expressed here are my own. If you don't like 'em... Think up your own stuff.
Here is something that I've been wondering: What are the legal guidelines for podcasting? I know the ones that are talk and original music are fine. But what about people who play their favorite song or remake of existing songs?
I listen to a couple of podcasts where people play their favorite songs and I was wondering if that is legal? I know this is offtopic but this one question have yet to find an answer too.
You say things that offend me and I can deal with it. Can you?
It's psychotic! They keep creating new ways to celebrate mediocrity ...
I would love for NPR to start selling/distributing podcasts.
That would make it so convenient to subscribe to certain programs like "Morning Edition" or "All Things Considered"
Sure, you may say that I can schedule WireTap to rip the Real Media feeds, but it would be so much simpler to just get it nightly through iTunes, and synch it to the iPod.
If you don't know what AltaVista is (was), get off my lawn.
"its not like this hasn't been done before with apple..."
No it hasn't dimwit.
Apple decided to migrate from 68k->PPC.
Apple has never had their chip supplier outright dump them. Ever.
Keep telling yourself don't worry, be happy! It will be hilarious this time next year...
Along with itunes 4.9, there is a software update for ipod click wheel. As I have never updated the software on an ipod, I did it for the first time, and after the installation was complete, I was told to plug the ipod into the wall.
Only problem is I have lost the firewire cable, and cannot do so with the usb cable... so I am now sitting here with an ipod brick.
Really wish they had warned me before I went through with this, any ideas on a fix?
People may be interested in my write-up on Badfruit's BadApple which I posted to LiveJournal here.
In short, this tool modifies your HOSTS file to point the iTunes Music Store link in iTunes to a local copy of IIS. That copy of IIS serves a python app which hosts a fake music store to offer Podcasts. This copy of IIS is open to the entire world (listening on *:80) running some rather untested software, and the redirection (via the HOSTS file) essentially 'breaks' iTunes Music Store functionality. This behavior (still) does not appear to be documented on BadFruit's site.
It also appears to have some hooks into mp3tunes.com, but I wasn't able to completely determine what. BadFruit may be selling music or collecting referrals, I'm not sure which.
In short, please use lots of caution before installing this software. It makes some rather drastic changes to one's machine, and these aren't documented on BadFruit's site.
iTunes Podcasting support is amazing!
This is better than "TiVo for radio (shows)" removing the clumsy manual browsing to stream or download shows (and keep track of what you have and haven't heard).
And next up - video. Subscribe to your favourite TV series (old or new) and have episodes downloaded (for a fee and with FairPlay) when they become available, to watch at your leisure.
On your desktop, laptop, iPod or iPod connected to a TV.
Then, eventually, movies.
Go Apple!
Cheers,
Ashley.
I don't read blogs, and I don't intend to listen to any 'podcasts' either. Books are for reading, and iPod's are for music. As far as I can tell, the main disadvantage of these digital soapboxes is that you can't hurl tomatoes at the orator. These newfangled ideas are nothing but chicanery perpetrated by charlatans. In fact, the iPod is nothing more than a cassette player crossed with a cue ball.
music lover since 1969
They're another dotnet company that will go out of business soon. Why would anyone want to use such a crummy, not-thought-out interface? and a $1 a song? No way are they going to make any money! ;)
VidCasting? VodCasting?

Steve says it is time to buy a click wheel iPod,
since we won't have dual dual core 3mhz G5 for you, and any mac you buy now has a shelf life of 2 years rather than the typical five.
They have to sort of float on innovations outside of their present desktop line. AAPL has already downgraded their own earnings projections BEFORE this announcement.
Wow, the Intel announcement made your PowerMac stop working? Jeez, I'm glad I didn't get one of those. My eMac still works just fine.
Warning: Apple/Nintendo fangirl. Likes her electronics cute & cuddly. May be rabid.
I was looking forward to using iTunes 4.9 to download podcasts. Unfortunately, it does not include a built-in BitTorrent client like iPodder.
Many worthwhile podcasts are delivered as BitTorrent files. Apple missed an opportunity to provide BitTorrent capability in a legitimate application.
"Rug being pulled out from under them" implies that it was a complete surprise that they were totally unprepared for. But they've been developing OS X for Intel machines for five years now, and Rosetta for at least a couple years. It's more like someone standing on a rug, who's been weaving themselves a new rug the whole time just in case, so that if anyone does pull it out they can just jump at the right moment, throw down the new rug, and keep standing there. There might be a small stumble, but they're not going to fall flat on their face because it didn't take them entirely by surprise.
Warning: Apple/Nintendo fangirl. Likes her electronics cute & cuddly. May be rabid.
Funny, looked to me like Apple dumped IBM. I worked in Fishkill , saw but little innovation or spirit. Apple always does quality work. I'm the sole Mac user here, barring our software guy who has one for him and one for his wife. Our field guys are constantly having problems, buying new machines, repairing old ones and my Mac (G4 iBook 933) keeps running smooth.
IT JUST WORKS! Watch for a Cadillac Intel with an Apple on it!
You need to be careful. NASA once lost a satellite because of metric/imperial conversion. You might really irritate someone if you say "I'm sending you an assload of podcasts" when you meant "an arseload of podcasts". It could end in a disaster.
I come from a LAN down under

Thanks for the dimwitted sarcasm!
For those of us who use their machines for something other than a virus safe porn viewer like you IBM giving Apple the finger has put an end to any reason at all to fund further development money and time on a platform that is in its last days.
Have fun with the wimpy x86 chips clown, those of us who heavily leveraged the PPC's insane floating point/Altivec performance aren't sticking around.
Most people buy Apple for the OS, not just for what's under the hood.
Mercy was given to me by Christ...I must give the same to others.
It looks like 4.9 breaks the library switcher Libra.
Because iPod users made it popular, and because it rhymes with "broadcasting", which helps the old-school folks easily understand what it is.
complaining about something or other to his vicodin infested audience.

And remember Charles Dickens was a serializing pain in the conservative ass with his whiny "Little Dorit" writings. (And po' li'l Tiny Tim too... Boo Hoo...)
A pod cast is one (but usually more) audio casting of somebody crying out in the wilderness. Sometimes they cry something worth hearing.
MSBPodcast.com The opinions expressed here are my own. If you don't like 'em... Think up your own stuff.
Uh,no.
The fact that a company has had the foresight to build a safety net is in no way an indication of any actual desire to ever have to use it. Nor is it in any way a predictor as to its effectiveness.
Come on guy, wake the fuck up. This don't worry be happy bullshit is getting old.
A year from now Apple is going to be an overpriced x86 OEM with the giant albatross around their necks of having to fund the development of an entire operating system.
Watch the keynote and look at Steve's face and listen to his tone - he knows very well the gravity of what IBM did to Apple.
Perhaps the iPod stuff won't fade too quickly, but the OS/hardware part of Apple is on their way out.
Smart of you to post as an AC, so we can't rub your face in your mispredictions later.
Warning: Apple/Nintendo fangirl. Likes her electronics cute & cuddly. May be rabid.
All the podcasts are by damn Americans. Can't understand what the hell they are on about.
Did anyone notice all the iPods are color and the Photo's are gone.
My own painful example would be Leica and Swarovski optics. A Leica spotting scope that cost 800 USD three years ago is now $1300. Leica isn't paying dramatically more taxes today than they were then. I still can't buy their dang scopes, and I could have back then.
Anyone who's traveled in Europe or anywhere else could tell you that prices in different sectors of the economy can differ in ways that may or may not reflect the added costs you're talking about. Gas for private cars is much more expensive. Other stuff will be far cheaper than you'd find them in the US. And until the Euro there was tons of variation in those things from place to place. Soda in Paris, always expensive. Instanbul is cheap, but it's hard to say how cheap at a given moment because of Lira inflation.
The world is not reducible to doctrines.
"Fundamentalism" isn't about divine morality. It's about human authority.

Out of curiosity I listened to some randomly chosen podcasts (chosen randomly from the lists in iPodder) the other day.
They were all the same: sad people talking into cheap microphones.
While I like the concept and the way iPodder works, the podcasts i listened to were very much like the early webpages people made when 'having a homepage' was very cool. Hey look at me, I have a Podcast too...pfff
The Bigger The Headache The Bigger the Pill
Any one know if they've added support for the 'album artist' field yet?
The iPod's a real pain when you're got two CD's of the same name and only 'album artist' differentiates them - WMP get's it right!
Let's face it: iTunes *still* can't play back albums properly. Sure, a part of the problem is the inherent final-frame padding in the MP3 format, and crossfading can sometimes disguise the problem. Still, this POS can't do what CD players have done for over 20 years.
...
Better yet, having gapless support in iTunes might mean we could one day have a gapless iPod (*GASP*)
Note that at the bottom of the article reporting his employment it states, "Happy April 1st".
It helps to read more than just the headlines..
"Al Franken, ABC "THE NOTE", Adam Curry, ABC News "SHUFFLE", ABC NEWS "NIGHTLINE" CBC RADIO!!"
Is Apple Computer suggesting, by making these stations' logos the most prominent on their homepage advert, that we podcast listeners shall download iTunes and listen to left-wing radio blogs???
Compiling the whole software package that you work on may take longer, but no one cuts a new version more than once or twice a day, and people who use Continuous Integration have build servers.
So yes, they're largely gone if you set up your infrastructure right.
You're not getting DirectX, ever. Which is a good thing. DirectX is horrifyingly complex when compared to OpenGL, and it doesn't need to be. Quite frankly, it's MS that needs to change. Things like theNo one is going to justify a technology downgrade just so that you can play Yet Another WW2 FPS.

What are some good podcasts in the iTunes library?
"I think everyone is an agnostic but just doesn't know" - Frazz
Unless you've been hiding under a rock you would know that with every release Apple tightens down Itunes and makes it less and less useable by taking away features and stripping away ways access to your own music. You know, things like reducing the number of times you can burn a playlist, taking away internet sharing, and then taking away unlimited Lan sharing. Now its what? 5 lousy users a day that can connect to your shared music? I'm just waiting for Apple to remove sharing and cd burning all together. If you think that isn't their long term goal your kidding yourself.
Seriously WTF? Would any other company be able to get away removing features release after release in an attempt to control what you can do with YOUR music? My guess is no.
If you wanna get rich, you know that payback is a bitch
I always disliked one thing about iTunes, and that is that you must install the Quick Time codec/player in order to use it. I remember on old versions they did not do this... Is there any open source software out there that has an iTunes-esque type of music store? I buy a lot of music from Magnatune.com I like them for their unique taste in music and support of open source formats. I also like the fact that they don't buy into this top-40 chart nonsense.
I can't believe that Apple would not roll out the iPod updater without including the 3G iPods. This fix would be simple and easy to include with the update. My bet is they are going to include it in some update down the line like they did with the "Shuffle Songs" feature. I guess my options are get a new iPod or wait ....
Just asking?
How would you know how difficult it would be?
Are you expert in the ins and outs of how Apple develops for iPod? How Apple organizes their source trees? Think Apple has free testing resources just lying around?
I just wonder where you get this information from that allows you to make such assertions?
Does anyone know how the new iTunes App how it will interact with the files the iTalk adapter for the iPod creates? So far, I've found the clarity of the iTalk is perfect for Podcasting; however, I have yet to find an app that makes getting the recordings off the ipod as simple as syncing the ipod.
Is this serious?
was thousands of people happily uninstalling iPodder and other low-quality podcast clients.
Man, am I glad there's finally a big podcast client that doesn't suck. Thank you, Apple, for making the basic stuff easy.
What's your damage, Heather?
First off without support for Bittorrent Itunes Podcating feature will make it a fairly crappy Podcasting tool. Too many shows like TWIT have gone Bittorrent to simply ignore it. Now user are going to have to use Ipodder AND Itunes to manage podcast? Great.
/.? I surprised there is only one post on the lack of BT support in Itunes.
I disagree that Apple will do anything about it either. Apple and especially Jobs from what I can see are not exactly for P2P. Adopting and integrating BT and therefore P2P directly into one of Apple's products might be seen as endorsing BT which as we all know is a tool for "pirating music and movies". In otherwords don't expect to see that anytime soon.
I may be wrong, and actually hope I am. Btw are there podcast listeners on

1984. Apple debuts Macintosh in a hit '1984' featurette where a free-spirited young woman smashes the oppressive regime of status-quo PCs to pieces.
1989. The Berlin wall falls to pieces.
2004. Al Gore sits on the board at Apple. 4 million Americans own ipods.
2005. Apple debuts iTunes 4.9, with Podcasting support. Millions download, only to discover the stations featured and promoted are... gasp!... SOCIALIST!!!
No Air America podcasts? You say that as if it's a bad thing.
I for one am not at all excited about using the podcasting for talk. I suppose an NPR show here or there may make it in. What I am excited about is the ability for dj's to make there mix and publish them for all to hear. This is really exciting. It is one more step in making more artists more accessable to more people. Now I can listen to hours of original material put together by good dj's every day. Personally I think this is just awesome!
You're an idiot. Plain and simple.
Because I download it once and update all 3 of my computers. If/when I reinstall windows, iTunes is a single file that is "the latest". I can go back to any version of iTunes I want in case Apple removes or reduces features.
As long as Apple doesn't have a problem with the bandwidth, I certainly don't and its more convenient.
You were mistaken. Which is odd, since memory shouldn't be a problem for you
For those who don't know the hard way to convert:
Set your Importing codec to AAC, right click on an MP3, select 'Convert Selection to AAC'; when finished, Show Song File, change filename to .m4b, reimport.
Phil
Looks as if we will continue to need to use 3G iPod-Linux for recording audio at anything higher than 8kHz
Look, if Apple don't provide a feature it's because you don't fucking need it OK?
You cannot improve on perfection.
People who install Linux on their iPods should be rounded up and shot in the face.
It is an act of sacrilege equivalent to shitting on the face of Saint Jobs.
Apple Uber Alles! Apple Uber Alles! Apple Uber Alles!
I'm just waiting for Apple to remove sharing and cd burning all together. If you think that isn't their long term goal your kidding yourself.
I think that rock hit your head. Apple has removed some features that most people don't use, and a few people (like you or I) miss.
But burning and sharing removed? Sorry, that's not going to happen because they are core features that Apple is promoting. Why would you buy an Apple laptop and a desktop if you couldn't share? Why would you use iTunes if you couldn't burn CD's? It makes no sense.
Basically Apple racheted down the iTunes features to those used in a home setup, and they are pretty much done it seems. Although I am also sad iTunes no longer lets me share with everyone in the office as well as it used to, I have to say that since there's no other choice at all that lets me share anything whatsoever I can't be too mad at them. Why not bitch that Windows Media Player has no sharing at all?

When you add up all local, state, and federal taxes, it's not unusual to find that fully 60% of one's income is consumed by them.
Now, what is slavery, but the state where 100% of the fruits of one's labor is confiscated?
Hence, the average American is currently about 60% enslaved.

the reason for Microsoft's interest in RSS becomes clear now. Embrace, exrtend and wipe out Apple's dominance in podcasting!
I updated this morning, but the update leaves much to be desired for my tastes.
What I'd like to see is a more ambitious release for iTunes 5.0.
I'd like to see Apple release an iTunes Server package similar to say, KnoppMyth. Offer an *official* Darwin release that the user burns to a CD, and then pops it into a spare PC (especially if said user is a *switcher*) and it installs Darwin and iTunes Server. Obviously, no OS X GUI, and the software makes the spare PC a remote iTunes server that you control through your other Mac(s)/PC(s) through iTunes on your home network.

The BBC has a reasonable variety of programmes available, and I don't think you'd call them blogs.
Radio 4 programmes include "Today" (Radio 4's flagship news programme); "From our own correspondent" (an extended piece of reportage); "In Business" (a business programme); and "In Our Time" (a highbrow chat show).
The full list of the BBC's offerings can be found here.

No you don't. Look a little further down the iTunes download page and you will find an iTunes only installer.

In spite of the fact that the files reside in the iTunes Music folder, I find that podcasts you are subscribed to (and have been downloaded) do not appear in your Library. You can get them to appear in your library by dragging them from the special Podcasts item (or from the Finder) to your Library, but they do not automatically appear there. Why not? Net result is that smart playlists are of no use for podcasts without some scripting trickery to do the dragging for you.
When you do drag the podcasts to your library, iTunes 4.9 treats the one in your Library as a separate item from the one shown in Podcasts - for example they have separate play dates/counts - even though they are the same exact file (revealing the file in either place reveals the same file in the same location in the Finder.) But it gets worse. Even though it treats them as separate things, if you delete the podcast from your Library, it also deletes it from the Podcasts listing, and they don't even show up again as there but not downloaded. There is no way to get them to show up again as undownloaded that I can find (so that you can redownload them) - refreshing the podcast does not put them back in the list. If you still have the files you can drag them from the Finder into the Podcasts listing and then they will show up there again, but not in your Library.
Also odd is how in the podcast "directory" at the music store, all podcasts show a "time" of "Not available". That's useful. And you can't have it show the size of the files either. Podcasts tend to be pretty large files and knowing how big a podcast is seems like something most people will want to know before they download it. Then there's the fact that what you first see when you start up this new version is a Podcast item. So you click it, of course, and what do you see? A pretty much blank window. Hidden at the bottom, below the scrollbar, is a small link to the "Podcast directory". This is just plain bad design.
This podcast stuff in iTunes is clearly a total rush-job. I certainly hope they improve upon it soon. Currently it appears that whoever designed it must recently have been hit on the head with a large metal pipe. I give the podcast feature 1 star, though overall iTunes is still a good music player/organizer application, albeit, amazingly, *STILL* missing gapless playback. They develop this pathetic Podcast implementation instead of addressing that long existing and oft-requested shortcoming? Argh!
Overall I have to knock it down to 3 stars due to the terrible podcast implementation, that it is more and more feeling like a hodgepodge, and the continuing failure to provide gapless playback. Sigh. I really wish there were some music player competition on the Mac again - obviously Apple needs it! The only hope is that this is cross-platform and there is music player competition on that other platform, even podcast plugin to iTunes competiton - maybe that will jar Apple into improving iTunes. Maybe they are doing a real update to iTunes, a complete rethinking, to be dubbed 5.0. God I hope so!

Gee, sorry you're having such a bad day. It'll all be better soon. If you really think Apple will put out a replacement for their top-end G5 boxes that can't match or beat their floating point performance, then perhaps you really should leave now. The excitement is likely to be too much for you.
I don't see it. All I see is the international versions. Would you mind pasting a link to the no QuickTime download?
Moneyed corporations, non-working 'poor' and criminal prisoners are turning productive citizens into tax-slaves.
Not every member of the "non-working poor" can do anything about it. For instance, I graduated with a bachelor's degree in computer science two years ago. Despite my best efforts in networking and scanning the newspaper, all the IT job leads have produced only "Sorry, we went with another candidate." Heck, I even tried applying for a position as a cashier at a home improvement store: "Sorry, we went with another candidate." I'm currently working in a position at the local VA hospital that pays $0.00 per hour, but eventually I'll have to move out of my parents' house, and volunteering doesn't put food on the table. In this job market, do you expect recent computer science graduates to go through a city's phone book and ask every single business in town whether they're taking applications? Or is it enough just to apply at every store in the mall and hope for the best?
Replace "podcasting" with "web pages" in your post, pretend it's 1994, and you'll understand.
Sure, there are a lot of people just telling others about their days. But many big media companies are making their products available as podcasts. It's a medium, and the content is following. There will be professional news, sports...
Think of it as having the wide variety and "niche" presence of satellite radio crossed with the time-shifting of a Tivo or a web page.
I'm sure the previous poster can speak for himself, but...
I just wonder where you get this information from that allows you to make such assertions?
His brain problably (they're great, do try one!).
Plain and simple relevent experience is sufficent to work this one out. Greif, from the iPod's perspective it basically just copies an MP3 file to the iPod when you dock it, it's not as if it's an all new codec or all new feature (I think it's been established that the iPod plays MP3's just fine thank-you-very-much).
iTunes is where the vast majority of work adding support for Podcasting has been done - the only visible feature on the iPod is a 'Playlist' that says 'Podcasts' AFAICS. Beyond that there could be allowance for an extra meta tag to mark something as a Podcast, but that's about all that would be required for this (and it's technically possible to do it just fine without changing the firmware on the iPod at all).
Are you expert in the ins and outs of how Apple develops for iPod? How Apple organizes their source trees?
We get some insight. Of course they are not exactly new to the whole concept of software development, so I think we can assume it's not completely wacky and unmaintinable and that this sort of stuff is abstracted way above needing to recode something this trivial multiple times for different platforms.
Think Apple has free testing resources just lying around?
Well yes (as in, they already have labs with at least 3 different versions of the iPod, so they don't need to setup new testing facilities or make any new investments to use it).
Oh, FWIW it does actually work on the 3G iPod's and my mind boggles at the thought of anyone thinking it might not (how on earth do you imagine the existing iTunes Podcasting plug-ins work?).
I think it's ill advised to think that just because you may not understand something, that everyone else is equally clueless.
The most obvious is Direct Drawing, which is high throughput accelerated 2d/3d drawing. Next, is Direct Sound, which is a way to play and mix sounds in real time and play with sound card features.
But, Apple has a good set of OpenGL drivers,(they could be better, of course) and Darwin is supported by OpenAL and SDL. Considering that many games are ported with basically no loss of features or functionality or features, it seems like they are roughly equivalent. Also consider that Id releases games without relying on them, and Id usually pushes their games way ahead of everyone else, and you can draw the conclusion that OpenGL has the advantage.
People target DirectX for the same reason that people target Java. Mediocrity lowers prices for developers, and Windows has a larger installed gamer base.
Slashdot. It's Not For Common Sense
A Slashdot article about something iPod/iTunes and nobody has started wanking off about the lack of Ogg Vorbis support.
:P
;)
I knew you Slashdot dwellers would conform to the mp3 way!
Also ever so slightly interesting to note.. you can submit podcasts, and none of them seem to be in AAC format.
i think a lot of us are realizing that with phones playing video content much in the way podcaststing works, the ipod is going to have to innovate itself again soon or it could suddenly vanish from the marketplace, consumed by cheaper multifunction devices that are NOT from apple. i was wondering if anyone thinks this podcasting may all be ramping up to an intel ARM-based phone/pocketPC (or pocketMAC, rather)/video-capable ipod-like device, another rumored reason behind the more-complex-than-it-seems intel/apple partnership. if i'm right, we can expect to see a super-capable, awesomely designed iDevice that finally fills in the gaps with seamless integration of your mobile needs within the next year or so. the real question then would be: are they going to have it out in time to seize the marketplace like they did with the ipod, or is it already too late to repeat simply ue to the fact they don't have a new lifestyle to maket with it, singular to apple (seriously, i have friends whose whole life is an ipod commercial)? i hope so much that i can get my hands on one of these soon...
If Apple can simplify a process that previously involved a couple of applications and several steps using a single click in iTunes, then ... hell, I'm for it!
Are we sure that Apple didn't engage in a bit of viral marketing through the introduction of the "Podcasting" brand? Great name ...
I'm from New York City but live in London and I'm VERY keen on an process for downloading programmes from 93.9FM WNYC and shifting them onto my iPod for my morning Tube ride! iPodderX works fairly well, but hope NPR gives over completely to Apple in the near future.
You don't need too convert it to bookmarkable AAC (aka M4B) as it can bookmark the MP3 ;)
:)
Give it a try
No built in support for turning MP3 to bookmarkable AAC's
Rockbox implements unlimited user-configurable bookmarks with plain simple mp3s on Archos and iRiver. It's not that difficult and doesn't require AAC. You just need to append a meta-file with timestamps or byte offsets. And be able to take control of your device's firmware/OS for playback, of course. Maybe ipodlinux can do the same for iPods?

Apple is not some kind of perfection here. Their Windows software is terrible. They break their own UI conventions and make software that looks different from everything else. They clutter the screen with crap and make their software incredible heavy.
I have an intense dislike for UI conventions as I think they are silly, so this complaint falls of deaf ears. All I care about is if a programs UI is good for what it does, which I feel generally iTunes excells at.
iTunes is a great example of this. It had more features a year ago than it does now. Taking stuff out because "the home market doesn't use it" is not a good idea for customers. Apple is not right for doing it. Apple is not what Slashdot pretends it is. It's just another company.
Didn't say I liked it. I'm just saying why I did it. In the end your grousing sounds pretty odd because it's thier program, as with any commercial app you use it on thier terms. Them slightly reducing features that other apps don't even have? Still a net win for me, the user. What's the alternative, some other app that sucks even more? Until Apple drags iTunes down below that point I see no reason to harp on them for changes they make.
People don't bitch about WMP not having sharing because it never had it, and isn't intended to. You could always just share the folder and be done with it.
And you can't do the same thing with iTunes because...? Who are you to say iTunes was "intended" to be a general purpose audio broadcast applcation? I never considered it to be so.
There are alternatives that do all the things that Apple removed. Most of them are better than iTunes. You can even do multicast audio out of some of them.
If there are better ones I sure aven't found them. I am at heart a pragmatic person, at owrk I don't even synch iTunes with an iPod so I could use anything. Yet, I stick with iTunes because I find it works better for listening to music. It doesn't try to get too pretty. It doesn't get all annoying on you. I like how it sorts and I like how it plays.

GP: "It was obvious they meant that in general most Americans would claim the US is a Christian nation. I see very little evidence to go against that assertion."
You: "America was founded by Deists ([...]). Anybody who thinks that's the same thing as your modern-day fundamentalist Bible thumper is sufficiently divorced from history to render their opinion moot."
Isn't the faith of the founders of our nation kind of irrelevant to the point at hand regarding our nation today.
Refute this: The United States of America could be considered a Christian nation because 43 or our presidents have been self-described Christians.
(This argument could be used for lots of other fun thought experiments: The US is a white nation, the US is a patriarchal nation, the US is a heterosexual nation, etc. Any of those statements, regardless of their lack of political expediency, could be considered true. I couch my words, because generalizations often tread close to the edge of fallacy.)
Of course, ad hominem is always more fun: "Anybody who thinks [differently from me] is sufficiently divorced from history to render their opinion moot." Why challenge (or refute, or correct) a statement when you can just disregard it! Doesn't this kind of thinking only reinforce the schism of debate found all over our great nation?
Anyhow, nothing personal. Cheers.
