Compare with companies like Royal Dutch Shell which pay 7-8% dividend yield and are less subject to consumer whims.
Which Royal Dutch Shell are you talking about? I'm looking at quote.yahoo.com, RDS-B, and it says the yield is 3.76.
Furthermore, the stock has gone between $36-$64 in 52 weeks (rounded), as opposed to Apple $90-$133.. So RDS had a much bigger percentage swing in a year..
Tax deductible is a misnomer. It is true that advertising is an expense that is removed from the gross before the tax rate is applied but it does not create a dollar for dollar wash. It is still a losing proposition.
In your "correction", you're conflating tax deductible and tax credit. A tax credit (e.g. the $7500 federal tax credit for alternative vehicles) does reduce your taxes "dollar for dollar". A tax deduction does what you described.
Admittedly, this article is almost 3 years old, but I can't find the one I read recently.. Apparently local bookstores are actually _growing_ in popularity and sales.
Dump it into the Mariana Trench (I see that is currently against international law).. shoot it into the sun.. actually *develop* the reuse of fuel systems.
Microsoft for instance produces most of its products out of offices in Redmond.
Produces as in someone writes the code in? What if theoretically, they wrote the code in Redmond, but had everything actually compiled in Nevada? Or if the servers for downloads were in Nevada? Seems like there's always going to be ways to "game" the system.
BTW, MS definitely has SF Bay Area offices too, in Mountain View. (There's a weekly SETI institute science talk on a wide range of subjects that's held in a theater in one of the MS buildings.)
Regulate specific things to prevent specific problems
HOW specific? Are you claiming that something like "dangerous driving" shouldn't be illegal? e.g. even if the speed limit is 65, if it's foggy or raining a lot, someone shouldn't be driving that fast.
You don't have to be "a rich guy" to do that. If you have a low enough mortgage, _counting_ the mortgage interest deduction(*), you can reasonably make more from investing that you would have made by paying off the mortgage earlier.
(*) I know some deductions are reduced due to AMT, I'm not sure if the mortgage interest deduction is. If so, and one pays AMT, that has to be taken into account.
Umm, of course we have health care. Until recently, we weren't FORCING ME to pay for your health care and vice versa.. That was a GOOD thing. Why do people from other countries keep coming here _for health care_ even when their countries supposedly have much better universal health care?
People rightfully want to come to the U.S.A. from other parts of the world, because with hard work and education, people can be successful.
Though I read an article recently that said that it originally _was_ mute that was used in this context, but incorrectly changed to moot at some point. I can't find it in a quick search.
You do realize that would require a Constitutional Amendment, right?
That's the first thing I thought of too, especially since (modified) polio is working wonders in getting people's own bodies to fight cancer.

Dividends *restarted* then. There were also dividends in the 80s & 90s.

Where? Seriously. Serious question, not meaning to nitpick.
Though admittedly the couple I just found were also 4K, seems to me like they start at $4500 street price, even including older models.
Are you writing bugs about the swift compiler/errors/etc. at bugreport.apple.com?

That doesn't solve your lack of having a store, I just thought it was surprising.

Given how often it keeps coming up in the news (expanded recall), the *rest* of us already have faulty airbags.
Huh? deducting the dues from their paycheck IS making the employee pay, that's my point.
Then, by that argument, EVERY employee should be forced to pay union dues due to the 40 hour workweek, etc., mentioned elsewhere.
But why should teachers be forced to pay union dues if they don't WANT to be part of the union?
Fix the system, like stealing my money to give to other people?
Imaginary currency?
Isn't the U.S. Dollar just as "imaginary"? The green pieces of paper only have value because we believe they have value.
(BTW, I have never used Bitcoin, and don't have any plans to use it.)

You have always been required, as a taxpayer, to pay "use tax" on out of state purchases, that is identical in rate, to sales tax.

The article says it's owned by a foundation, not him.

Seems like a strange launch time. Haven't the rest of the consoles (for decades) been launched in the calendar 4th quarter, to get Christmas sales?

Why do you call net metering a subsidy? I'm seriously asking.
Solar creates energy during the day (duhh), when it's most needed, thus lowering the need for more power plants.
I thought you were talking about the federal tax subsidy, but that will go away eventually too (currently it's through 2016 IIRC).
I thought I had read a recent news article about a denial of plans to raise some fees for solar in CA, but I couldn't find it in a brief search.
