    Compare with companies like Royal Dutch Shell which pay 7-8% dividend yield and are less subject to consumer whims.

    Which Royal Dutch Shell are you talking about? I'm looking at quote.yahoo.com, RDS-B, and it says the yield is 3.76.

    Furthermore, the stock has gone between $36-$64 in 52 weeks (rounded), as opposed to Apple $90-$133.. So RDS had a much bigger percentage swing in a year..

    Though admittedly the couple I just found were also 4K, seems to me like they start at $4500 street price, even including older models.

    Tax deductible is a misnomer. It is true that advertising is an expense that is removed from the gross before the tax rate is applied but it does not create a dollar for dollar wash. It is still a losing proposition.

    In your "correction", you're conflating tax deductible and tax credit. A tax credit (e.g. the $7500 federal tax credit for alternative vehicles) does reduce your taxes "dollar for dollar". A tax deduction does what you described.

    Admittedly, this article is almost 3 years old, but I can't find the one I read recently.. Apparently local bookstores are actually _growing_ in popularity and sales.

    Then, by that argument, EVERY employee should be forced to pay union dues due to the 40 hour workweek, etc., mentioned elsewhere.

    Isn't the U.S. Dollar just as "imaginary"? The green pieces of paper only have value because we believe they have value.

    (BTW, I have never used Bitcoin, and don't have any plans to use it.)

    Microsoft for instance produces most of its products out of offices in Redmond.

    Produces as in someone writes the code in? What if theoretically, they wrote the code in Redmond, but had everything actually compiled in Nevada? Or if the servers for downloads were in Nevada? Seems like there's always going to be ways to "game" the system.

    BTW, MS definitely has SF Bay Area offices too, in Mountain View. (There's a weekly SETI institute science talk on a wide range of subjects that's held in a theater in one of the MS buildings.)

  17. You have always been required, as a taxpayer, to pay "use tax" on out of state purchases, that is identical in rate, to sales tax.

    HOW specific? Are you claiming that something like "dangerous driving" shouldn't be illegal? e.g. even if the speed limit is 65, if it's foggy or raining a lot, someone shouldn't be driving that fast.

    You don't have to be "a rich guy" to do that. If you have a low enough mortgage, _counting_ the mortgage interest deduction(*), you can reasonably make more from investing that you would have made by paying off the mortgage earlier.

    (*) I know some deductions are reduced due to AMT, I'm not sure if the mortgage interest deduction is. If so, and one pays AMT, that has to be taken into account.

    Umm, of course we have health care. Until recently, we weren't FORCING ME to pay for your health care and vice versa.. That was a GOOD thing. Why do people from other countries keep coming here _for health care_ even when their countries supposedly have much better universal health care?

    People rightfully want to come to the U.S.A. from other parts of the world, because with hard work and education, people can be successful.

    Though I read an article recently that said that it originally _was_ mute that was used in this context, but incorrectly changed to moot at some point. I can't find it in a quick search.

    Why do you call net metering a subsidy? I'm seriously asking.

    Solar creates energy during the day (duhh), when it's most needed, thus lowering the need for more power plants.

    I thought you were talking about the federal tax subsidy, but that will go away eventually too (currently it's through 2016 IIRC).

    I thought I had read a recent news article about a denial of plans to raise some fees for solar in CA, but I couldn't find it in a brief search.
