A Tesla Model S refuels from empty to 80% in 30 minutes from a Supercharger, and they rarely need one because the car is fully charged every morning. I am not very picky about where I charge, as long as the kids and I can stretch our legs a bit after six hours of driving. For a while I used to ask hotels before I booked if they had a power outlet available for my car, but I don't bother any more. They do. They only differ in how fast charge they can provide, but that's usually not an issue when the car is plugged in all night. There is plenty of public parking spaces with fast-ish chargers as well now, and shopping malls with outlets outside to attract customers with modern cars. Tesla owners probably spend less time at charging stations than fossil car owners spend at gas stations. Charging is something which happens when you are doing something else, like shopping. I know, you can shop at many gas stations as well, but not while filling the tank for free.

From a stock holder perspective. it's a very dumb move.

Not at all. Tesla Motors owns a large supercharger network that Tesla owners (the 85 kWh version) can use for free. If other car makers support charging from Tesla superchargers, the owners of other car models would have to pay for use. Subsidizing free power for Tesla owners. And I'm sure no Tesla owner would complain if there are more superchargers availble for them to use, even if they would have to pay to use the non-Tesla superchargers.

A possible use for this is propulsion in space with no fuel. Even ion thrusters need fuel, and eventually run out of Xenon gas. Enabling satellites to stay in low earth orbit forever, and geostationary satellites to stay in position until it is time to de-orbit. And it would actually be economically feasible to de-orbit them, it will just take a very long time.

I'm afraid those scientists are 155 years late with their findings. Humans have adapted to their environment as explained by Charles Darwin in 1859. We have adapted to live on Earth, not in space or on the bottom of the oceans. This should not come as a surprise to anyone in 2014. To overcome this we have to gradually start living higher up, and perhaps in just a few hundred thousdands years our decendants will take their first steps in the vacuum of space, breathing sunlight and radiation instead of air.

Or we could just adapt the envioronment in the space ship / space habitat. Probably a lot easier..

How stupid are journalists alowed to be without getting fired? Look at this: Tesla acknowledged in a recent SEC filing that emissions credit sales hit $85 million in 2013's first quarter alone—15% of its revenue, and the only reason it made a profit.

No, it isn't the only reason it made a profit. Tesla made a profit from selling cars. This is a by-product of selling electric cars in the USA (only). The editor of this paper must believe his readers have negative intelligence. Yes, if you take away a major source of income from any company without replacing it with another income, then some numbers will turn red. No wonder he became a journalist if he thinks that is news. His supply of "news" is endless.

Tesla can take much higher prices if they want to, and still sell everything they make. The price tag is higher in Europe, where they don't get those pollution credits. If you order a Tesla Model S now, at least in Europe, it won't get delivered until next year. The car is immensely popular despite it's price tag.

Which other car producers have sold their entire production to consumers for months to come?

You sometimes travel 800km a day in your car. How often is that?

I travel more than 500km sometimes as well. Perhaps six times a year. And frankly I don't think I ever drove 800km without taking a half an hour break for some food and life preserving coffee. (Not to mention the kids, who needs food and toilet breaks more often than me. And coffee. Especially my two year old boy. I should stop serving them coffee, but it is probably better than sugary drinks..)

To me the convenience of waking up to a fully charged car every morning, and the slight inconvenience of 6 half hour breaks at fast charging stations every year, beats about 30 trips to the gas station every year. By a large margin. Fast charging is fast enough for me, and more convenient than battery swapping.

Battery life is not a problem any more. The battery in a Tesla Model S lasts longer than the engine in a typical gasoline powered car. Nobody worries about the cost of changing the engine after 250000-300000 km when they buy a new gasoline powered car, so why worry about a battery which only gets cheaper and cheaper and with ever improving capacity?

Let this company fail. If we keep improving battery technology at the same pace as now, replaceable batteries for cars will be an obsolete idea in a few years.

1 GW extra wind power capacity will only work when the wind blows. When you are in the middle of a low pressure, you don't have any wind, but you just had a lot of it, and you are going to get a lot of it in a few hours. That's why you need storage with wind power. Just adding extra wind power will not solve the problem.

When it's windy in countries with a lot of wind power, the price of power will go below 0. This happened several times in Denmark last year. (Check http://nordpoolspot.com/ for real time prices and statistics.) In Denmark, to choose a country with much wind power and good power transmission capacity to neighbour countries with storage (Norway and Sweden), the price of power typically varies 20 EUR/MWh during the day. Sometimes as much as 50 EUR/MWh. Probably more in Belgium due to low exchange capacity to countries with storage. When the wind turbines produce the most, the price will be lowest. This island will store the cheap electricity and release it when it is expensive. This island will almost certainly be more profitable than 1 GWh extra wind power.

The island will also be able to harvest tidal energy. As the tides change, so will the difference in water level on the inside and outside of the island.

Btw: Bitcoin production is shifting over to ASICs, which don't use that much electricity.
