OneDrive Is Microsoft's Rebranded Name For SkyDrive
SmartAboutThings writes with news that Microsoft finally figured out what to rename SkyDrive, after losing rights to the trademark last year. From the article: "Microsoft has just announced that SkyDrive, their cloud storage service, will be renamed to OneDrive very soon. This follows the news of trademark infringement case filed by British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB) last year over SkyDrive branding. Microsoft had initially hinted at fighting BSkyB's claims over SkyDrive branding, but then decided to step back and rebrand their cloud offering. The Redmond giant has registered onedrive.com and has also posted a promotional video on YouTube announcing the upcoming change."
And see if someone tries to force them to change the name again. I mean, if that happens, what can they do except use made up words?
Restore the madness of youth's lechery
I can hear this now:
"I saved it on one drive."
"Which drive did you save it on?"
"On my one drive."
"Like your C drive?"
If they hadn't dumped all the Live branding, they could have gone after LiveDrive.
Are copyright laws in Europe stricter about customer confusion? Or is this a case where if they can't use it in one country, MS won't use it anywhere?
Sky's first channel is called Sky One.
Any people should use this over Dropbox why? I'll take a service that works on all relevant platforms over Microsoft's Windows/WP only crap any day.

So now they will duke it out with Ubuntu?
I'm not sure how this would be confusing a trademark. Does British Sky Broadcasting offer a remote storage solution? This seems almost as silly as if Anderson Windows went after Microsoft for calling their OS "Windows" I know that I always get pissed when I'm stupid enough to order glass panes when I meant to get an OS. I've been to the UK and know many people there. I'm pretty confident that they are smart enough that they won't order online storage when they meant to watch television.
Our NSA Enabled Drive...
to rule them all !!!
The name reminds me of another cloud storage service strongly identified with an OS https://one.ubuntu.com/
I just can't be bothered.
Microsoft should stat using the Roman numeral for One for things like their services and devices. I can't imagine it would upset anyone using the lesser lowe case i for their products.
I'm an American. I love this country and the freedoms that we used to have.
Trademark XDrive
It's not a statement on their RAID or backup policy.
This wouldn't be the first time Microsoft co-incidentally named something confusingly similar to a rival service - OneDrive not to be confused with Ubuntu One or Office Open XML not to be confused with Open Office XML, or Palm PC not to be confused with Palm Pilot ..
I still think it's ridiculous that BSkyB won, given the fact that they don't have a SkyDrive.
OneDrive to Rule them all and in the Darkness bind them.
the first version always sucks. wait for TwoDrive.
Anons need not reply. Questions end with a question mark.
With all the billions they spend on everything else, they could have at least spent money on a design team to steal the logo and font style from a someplace other than their cloud competition, OwnCloud. This open source project has been around a while and hasn't really done much other branding, but somehow Microsoft decided it would just change the color and go with it. I can just hear Ballmer cheering on the team about how wonderful their marketing department is, yeeeeehaw!
Then microsoft will rename to two drive, BBC 2 will sue, etc. etc.
seriously I can't think of anybody I know that uses skydrive/onedrive
Onepe?
The XDriveOne Live still does not offer robust privacy. They know your keys, when know who you are, and when you upload what from where. This is not my one stop shop for storage like they might try and advertise. Latency is far worse than local disk too, even with full disk encryption. I'm gonna stick with my fancy system. I've got multiple hardware product as a service vendors lined up to provide low latency storage, onsite for the privacy aware, and with full support for the open SATA standard for you freedom folks. There are even existing addons available, like software layer encryption, RAID arrays and more!
Given the originality of the name, you know some heavy duty expensive marketing team worked on it. I would not be surprised if that didn't cost them more than EU litigation. Lawyers are cheaper in Europe in my experience

"directives of moron" is an anagram of Microsoft OneDrive.
Some drink at the fountain of knowledge. Others just gargle.
OneDrive to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them.
So it fits perfectly into the MS naming scheme, you say?
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.
I wonder how Ubuntu / Canonical will react, with their Ubuntu One cloud storage solution.
Not that I'm a M$ fanboy but it's shit that BSkyB has a lock on the word sky, common words like that should be off limits.
True, that. BSkyB is essentially trademark trolling here.

Does Microsoft for some reason want to keep on using names that are similar to what others are already using?
This should be fun
Seems to me to avoid any copyright issues Microsoft could just use their company name. Why not just call it Microsoft drive or Microsoft storage? I think Microsoft is trying to combine all its services into a uniform group anyway. But this reminds me of a even worse change of names. That is Apple's cloud services. Going from a .Mac to a MobileMe and then finally to iCloud. I have at least 3 aliases for email because of these ridiculous changes. If these companies are trying to make their services relevant. I am not sure making name changes helps in any way. People generally want something that is reliable and stable. Not constant change.
Unless you don't give a damn about the confidentiality of your data.
If you don't fancy setting up your own server at home, try http://owncloud.org/
Advantage is clients available for many platforms, including Android.
If that's too hard, and/or you want 24/7/365, pick a hosting solution in the country of your choice.
Difficult to know which one to pick, tho'.

Sorry, I don't buy this "While they have products that can be confused with the Microsoft one it doesn't mean that they have a case.". Because it's never helped anyone small.
I'am no marketing expert, but why not milk the hell out of the "cloud"?
MS were the main culprits in creating this buzzword, yet, they wont use it?

In other news Zune has now been rebranded as OnePod and the Surface as the OnePad.
I am guessing an announcement is forthcoming that Windows will be rebranded as OneOS.
I mean seriously, how many products have they had to rename in the past few years? Metro, SkyDrive, etc...
Maybe they should try Googling these things before they announce them.
CloudDrive : Amazon
CloudStore: UK govt!
CloudBox: LaCie
CloudWeb: CloudWeb
Netstore: Many
NetDrive: Bdrive Inc
xDrive: AOL
etc
So it fits perfectly into the MS naming scheme, you say?
To be an awful name that fits perfectly into MS naming schemes, it would have been MyDocuments.com
Jan/Feb 2014:
Maybe if we rename Skydrive as Onedrive, the Xbox One folks will join, and more people will associate our cloud service with our wonderful console...
Sometime back in 2012:
Maybe if we made Windows 8 full of tiles like Windows Phone OS, those PC users familiarized with the UI will buy our phones...
Polishing a turd, rearranging deck chairs on a sinking Titanic, yada yada...
So they named it after the Canoncial cloud offering, which is also called "One"? What's next "Dropship" maybe "MineCloud"? It's like they hired some clickbait spammer to name projects.

From my understanding, it was Microsoft that was the bully here, and tried to take the trademark from BSkyB in court, but lost.
