You'll end up with two types of applications - GPLv2 and GPLv3. A certain number will allow you to use either. Others will be stuck at one or the other (GPLv3 code cannot be incorporated in GPLv2 code.. forced obsolescence!) - so you the two won't cross-pollinate.
Until I see a *final* version and lawyers have looked at it (slashdotters really don't count!!) all my GPL apps are GPLv2 only. Some are stuck like that forever due to the number of contributors.... it would be a breach of license to use GPLv3 code in those or for a GPLv3 project to use code from them. Which is messy.
Actually a blank admin password does *not* prevent network access. It merely forces it to 'Guest' - kinda like root_squash.
On a network it may look like the network access is disabled, but it really isn't... it only takes one share with an 'Everyone' access setting and it's wide open.
I got that once... It's a real bitch to remove... the 64bit machine took a week of hunting down files (MS Antispyware/Spybot/Adaware could detect it but couldn't remove it.. it's self repairing - if you miss a file it redownloads itself and reinfects), and it shafted the kernel of the 32bit machine somehow so it kept rebooting every 3-4 minutes... had to reinstall the OS.
Cost me about a $1000 of billable time overall... I should send them the bill.
Spyware authors should be taken out and shot (after they've paid the bill of course).
Just like Mobile TV/Video is shit hot at the moment (and Ipod video is *nowhere* on that market because it lacks realtime streaming) more and more people are playing music exclusively on their mobiles.
And the mobile companies all have their own music stores.
Unless Ipod gets mobile functionality it's going to be in trouble soon.
Ancedotally there may be differences - I've found the female programmers I've worked with tend to solve problems in a different way to the male ones. They still get there (and neither is 'better') but it's often been more productive to put the women together because of this... saves the awkward 'WTF?' from both sides when they look at each others code.
If you get a girlfriend have a look at the number of simultaneous chat windows she has open... blokes in general don't do this.
On a more obvious note, when driving, men will tend to be distracted by talking in the car because they can't multitask as easier (men also tend to turn to face the person they're talking to and women don't) - several studies have shown this.
Of course there are exceptions, but on average it's true.
IIRC The most efficient queue is a single line feeding into several tills. Many shops now work this way... supermarkets haven't sussed that one yet though.
Agreed. A sysadmin (or programmer, consultant, whatever) is there to solve business problems together with everyone else.
So what if the person you're talking to doesn't understand your job. They understand *their* job and it's up to you to listen to them because they may just have an idea that helps everyone.
If you go into conversations with a holier than thou attitude you'll not only be a crap sysadmin, you'll be convinced you're a really good one - and be shocked when you're pushed out on the next downsizing.
You look over a colleagues shoulder... he's made an obvious mistake in his logic - do *not* point it out to him (unless he asks, and even then pretend to think about it). Nobody can stand a smartass, especially if they really are smart...
Not sure where he gets megapixels from... Each one is 432x432 which is only 186,000 pixels... Any cheap digital camera can do at least 640x480.
They're also *way* too constrasty - there's virtually no detail so you end up with lots of black and lots of white and little in between. It's a stretch to call it 'art' IMO - just bad photography.
Was going to post something similar - Google Groups has saved my ass so many times I've lost count. If I worked at a company that blocked that complain *very* loudly, then wait for the first deadline to be missed because we couldn't solve a problem...
(Not going to happen though, I've graduated to management these days & run things my way.. no proxies ir filters.. if people wanna hava a little fun then it's fine by me - happy employees are far more productive than work slaves).
It's not wrong to dislike something just because the groupthink says you should like it (prepare to be moderated into oblivion though, as this post probably will be).
I thought it was pretty damn awful too.... but then I'm not American (it was clearly in the 'Western' style to appeal to am american audience).
OTOH the TV execs seemed to agree with us as it was canned pretty quickly... can't have been getting any decent viewing figures.
Call yourself a geek... you don't know how to get around the validation? It's not exactly hard (in fact there's a greasemonkey script that'll do it automatically every time) - I don't think MS expect it to be secure since it's mostly there for people who buy copies from dealers thinking they're genuine.
It's kinda hypocritical of them after refusing for years to implement document.all because of the holy mantra of 'w3c specs and only the w3c specs', then coming up with their own tags just because they felt like it.
It is... Virtuozzo is junk - my last host forced everyone to transfer to it (from UML, which was working fine for over a year).
Despite doubling the amount of available memory to everyone as a sweetner* it ran like a dog.. it was *really* slow - about half the speed of the UML solution. Sure it was pretty, but it spent most of its time spitting out 'out of resources' errors, and would randomly terminate applications - quite often the ssh server, meaning you had to keep rebooting... After 24 hours of almost solid downtime I (and a great many others with the same host) switched providers. I picked one that used Xen - which has been running sweetly ever since).
We don't *need* OpenVZ. Xen is much better already.
(* A sweetner not just because Virtuozzo was a resource hog, but because it couldn't do the same bandwidth management (previously we were on a 20mb link with 150gb/month.. vz had no way of doing that so they dropped us to a 512kb link - slower than my DSL line..)
The fact is firstly the percentage isn't that huge (around 5% regular attendence in the UK, 15% when taken over a year). Secondly churches are *not* conservative... these are the places that are full of powerpoint presentations, complex PA, etc. - they're in the presentation business and are often very sophisticated at it.
Aside factoid: Of all the computer-owning churchgoers I know, well over 80% have Macs (mostly due to inertia.. once they started doing their powerpoints (yes, I know the mac probably has another name for it but I can't remember it) on it and using itunes to schedule the music, everyone bought one to be compatible. The musicians love them of course....
At one time you could use my bank in Lynx... then they started demanding javascript support for some reason, even though none of their pages (as far as I can see) use any.
You can still use it on anything *except* lynx.. there's absolutely no reason why a bank needs flash animations, complex javascript, etc. it just needs to produce a standard HTML page with the information on.
we can't even see the lunar lander with Hubble on our own moon.

Was there ever one there?

Pluto is more like a large dog...
It's more complex than that.

Marilyn Vos Savant's IQ is 190. That's the highest ever recorded. Perhaps that's where he got the number.
Even Einstein was only 161.

The trick is to act stupid. This works.

Showtime and their lame 'you must be in the US to view this page' crap.
It's OK for them to sell us their programming, but we're not allowed to read about it on their web site..
As P&T would say... total bullshit!
When is a dup not a dup?
It's a lame misspelling of SPAM.
Never heard it outside Slashdot.

She will remember it, just not give a shit...
Which opens up other problems - if the victim doesn't care about what happens, is it legally rape? Especially as they're unlikely to ever report it.
Yay! Just tried in links and it works!
I can still get to my bank while ssh'd into the server.. great (don't have web access from some places I work from).
