Bingo. I believe that any decent programmer who already knows how to approach a given task can quickly adapt themselves to whatever language or SDK they need to accomplish it.

I'm working for $24/hour right now in a 3-man IT shop for a manufacturing corporate hq, doing everything you can imagine. It isn't exactly what I had in mind when I started my IT career, but they were the only company interested in hiring me as an unexperienced programmer. Fast-forward 18 months, and now I'm hoping to find an entry-level position as a software developer by next year. What I've found so far is that I only get contacts from tech temp agencies and it's always for 6-12 month contract to hire positions. Let's see, leave a good paying job during a recession for an equal or lower paying job that I might not have 6-12 months later? Sounds like an awesome deal!

Uh, no. 10 year Air Force veteran here. TSgt pay after 8 years including flight pay and other benefits just adds up to entry level pay for a programmer in the midwest. It isn't worth having to deal with today's religious right Air Force leadership and the burden of having to support illegal wars/orders, the norm these days, or face court martial for standing up for your principles. You will be deployed to the mid-east on a rotating basis for 90 - 180 day rotations and you'll get about 25-50% of what the contractor working next to you is getting for pay. And that's the best case scenario. Marines and Army have the real shit end of that deal. there's also the poor support that war veterans are getting from the military and VA. Signing your life away is a very poor decision right now.

    1. It'll be a contractor job, probably for one of the big names like BAE, Northrup Grumman, L3, Haliburton subsidiaries, etc. 2. All those companies are knee-deep in corruption and war profiteering, and the blame always flows downhill. 3. The Pentagon has this nifty idea called total information warfare. They regard free speech online as some kind of war front, and you'll be helping them find ways to crush it. In general, mMilitary contracting is a bad deal, and I highly recommend avoiding it. The pay may look nice until they have you by the balls and then you'll wish you'd kept your civilian career.

  6. On liquids on TSA Changes Screening Based on Blog Suggestion · · Score: 4, Insightful

Funny. The comment I posted on the TSA's blog that mentioned various scenarios not addressed by passenger screening never made it past moderation. For example, garroting a passenger or crew member with your shoelaces, or carrying on ammonia and high concentration chlorine in your allowed 3oz containers to create mustard gas. My point was of course that, considering the fraudulent nature of the the Justice Dept's claims regarding the so-called liquid bomber plot, there's absolutely no reason to ban liquids. If we want to cover every potential for violence, we'd have to take away everyone's belts, shoelaces, all liquids, all sharp or pointy objects, trim their fingernails, and bind all passengers' hands and feet.

Any time you need the permission of the state to travel freely that's a problem, especially when that means complete access to travel information for all US citizens that travel by air. I don't think govt agencies need that information and I certainly don't want it at their discretion to access without a warrant. The real purpose behind real ID isn't just to create a data trail, but also to take another step further in disenfranchizing the poor or anyone ineligible, incapable, or unwilling to get a driver's license. It's also inevitably going to become this or another republican administration/congress's wet dream to make it a nationwide requirement at the voting booth in order to deter those same people, who typically vote for Democratic or populist candidates, from casting their votes.
