I too am appalled at some comments, however I value liberty of speech much higher. So what if some nutcase says something nutty? its your own responsibility to determine whether there is truth to it, you should not act (in any way whatsoever) upon something that could just be slander until you have determined the truth for yourself.
I would much rather have ten people say lies and one person telling the truth, then everyone being forced to shut up.
Yeah I know, the way I wrote it it sounded pretty banal. But as you said it, I wouldn't dream of posting about just anytime I went out with friends or bough something new, only when the occasion warranted it and there was something special about it. I suppose I didn't get that point accross very well.
And even then, twitter is hardly my main way of communicating with them. I do that through skype, either chatting or VoiP. But twitter helps in its own way and its fun.
You know, it's like sometimes one of my friends suddenly would tell me "you never told me about THAT" - thats where I use twitter now, small details that are interesting but which I might not just drop into a conversation - either because I have forgotten, thought it didn't matter or well for any reason basically. Maybe I'm odd, but twitter certainly does have its appeal for me and it works.
Using twitter to communicate friends who live the same place as you do is somewhat redundant and stupid, yes.
But I use it and related services to stay in touch with several friends who do not live close by and who do not know every detail of my life anyway. This enables me to stay close to these people even if we only see each other a couple of times a year. I find it very useful. But then again, I don't (usually) post silly stuff like when I'm eating or watching TV or stuff. But if I'm going out with some other people, go to watch a movie, acquire a new gadget that is just too cool and stuff like that, I may post a short notice about it.
Twitter messages are easy to ignore if you don't care about them, don't take up much of your time, yet allow you to stay updated with your friends when geography would make it difficult otherwise.
It is, but the people calculating pi to this extreme amount of decimal places are not the ones who gave us that ability, thus _they_ didn't do anything useful (in the context of GP).
Yes, and just because there is static on the TV it does not mean the TV doesn't show an image, right?
While being technically correct, these sort of statements don't help understanding anything. After all, what concept does the word pattern embody if not something that is clearly discernible in some well known format/notation?
Note that I do not argue that there is not pattern, but just that we haven't found it yet, and that what you describe most certainly isn't it (if there is one at all).
Not if he meant an explicit form of contract for that specific property when saying "something in writing". Which is hardly a too far fetched assumption to make.
His point likely being that whether such a thing is legal can be determined in advance by looking at all applicable laws, instead of waiting for a lawsuit to happen.
Part of the point probably also was, that just because something seems horrible to you, that doesn't mean it can't be legal. There may be a law that says that you can claim kidneys in EULAS (probably not with those specific words). In that case it's not so much a matter for the court to decide, as the law (in this hypothetical case) is already clear on the matter.
Alright, that is a slightly more valid point, but only ever so slightly.
It's not that I don't agree that there could ever be a situation such as you describe, however I can easily imagine plenty of situations where it still would be easier to create a wrapper for the library than to re-implement the required parts.
My objection is to your saying that it will ALWAYS (or close to it) be easier to re-implement the library. That is hardly a reasonable claim in my opinion.
Anyway, I'm aware that you did not mention piracy, but were talking mostly about OSS. The reason I mention piracy is because it is very similar to not not paying for an OSS product - because you can just get the source. Legally there is a difference of course, but morally I think they are sort of similar issues.
Also, I understand that many people don't want to pay for stuff. Perhaps you are even correct in assuming that this applies to most people. I can't say for sure - but neither can you. But the fact remains, that there seem to be "enough" people who are willing t pay, because in general people DO make money from selling stuff. As I said, look at the entertainment industry and how much money is made from a blockbuster movie.
Yes there are stinker movies that suck and that are no big financial hits. But do you honestly want to blame the pirates there? The same thing applies to the OSS world. If people can't be arsed to pay, then the product probably just doesn't matter to people.
I understand that you may have a personal stake in a project (either as a fan or developer), but you can't force everybody else to feel the same and cough up for it. It's not gonna happen, and neither should it.
I'm not pro piracy as such, I pay for (most of the) stuff I like, but sometimes piracy is convenient to get something quickly and hassle free. I even donate to OSS projects I like.
Most people will happily pay for something good, even if it is open source. If your product doesn't earn you enough money, it just wasn't good enough. I know some people like to whine about pirates and stuff, but that is just not the real problem.
If pirates really were that big of a problem, the entertainment industry would long have gone bankrupt because everyone would have refused to pay for anything. Seeing that the entertainment industry is doing quite well on the whole, you're just spreading bullshit.
First of all, evolution is not about anything. There is no goal. It just happens.
Second, evolution does not imply species going extinct. Evolution is just the process of species changing over time due to changing selection pressure. A species going extinct abruptly is a relatively rare occurrence in natural selection.
Technically, you could argue that the human and ape common ancestors have gone extinct, but the reality is that they have simply evolved in two different directions.
Makes no sense. Nothing is stopping me from modifying the library, release my changes under LGPL as a new version and then _use_ the new version of the library without having to release my other code as well.
Generalizing from what you said, noboday ever needs libraries because 1) programmers can just write the code themselves instead of using the libraries 2) non-programmers obviously have no use for libraries.
While the CPU/RAM model is not the way the brain works (I suppose), but it can be used to run a "virtual machine" that itself does work like the human brain does.
I don't think they are trying to simulate a human brain just by throwing a bunch of hardware together...
- Gtk widgets usually are ugly, clunky and have low usability. - QT/KDE are semi-ugly (the eye candy is overdone), slightly less clunky and not too much usabilty, - windows (the classic theme) controls are ugly, not clunky and have high usability.
I would take ugly windows controls over clunky "linux" controls any day. Too bad I can't make that choice (I don't actually want to run windows).
GTK also does this, and I agree with the OP that it looks like shit and annoys the heck out of me. You can get some very few themes that deliberately decrease the margins to saner values, but while this does reduce the clunkyness, it ends up looking even worse than before.
I don't see why controls can't look a bit more like they do in windows with respect to size and margins. I'd really love that.
I don't quite see what your're trying to say. All I'm saying is that it probably is not her own fault for being as she ist. It doesn't mean she should get off easier or anything, but blaming her for it isn't right and it's not going to fix things.
I would like to agree on your point of growing up on your own (but I can't). I've had to do plenty of growing up on my own myself, but then I'm probably not your average person and in all likelihod neither are you.
Most people don't grow up on their own. They need guidance. If they don't get that guidance, they will end up like this girl.
Let me repeat, this is not about making things easier for these people or giving excuses. After all we can also say that their parents were never brought up properly, so it isn't their fault. It wouldn't get us anywhere though. I'm just saying that hating these people for what they are or have become is wrong (because it's not their fault really) and it doesn't solve any issues.
To be fair, while it is tempting to put the blame squarely on her shoulders, it is probably not her own fault that she grew up with such a sense of entitlement.
Her family/school are likely very much to blame though, for not teaching her how the world works.
you are completely wrong. Go read dawkins books, e.g. the blind watchmaker.
I too am appalled at some comments, however I value liberty of speech much higher. While this is an interesting/intriguing anecdote, it (for obvious reasons) doesn't mention how she would have fared without playing tetris.
Using twitter to communicate friends who live the same place as you do is somewhat redundant and stupid, yes.

Because there is a third group of people: those who share freely without requiring anything in return.
PD -> BSD ---> GPL ("zealots") ------> Proprietary ("evil")

Why does one never have modpoints when one needs them most? Ugh...

Mind your make up.

well, if you don't get a shipping mail before the transaction shows up on your account you'd damn well hurry up and get a chargeback.
And you always get a track and trace number, so it's quite easy to see whether the stuff really has been shipped.
In denmark online shops are not allowed to charge your card until they have shipped your order. It's a very nice law to have.
To be fair, while it is tempting to put the blame squarely on her shoulders, it is probably not her own fault that she grew up with such a sense of entitlement.
