AR Emojis! And a relocated fingerprint scanner! And all for merely the price of a new laptop!
My thoughts exactly. I even laughed when I read the new features. And their weird pseudo iris on the camera is a hoot too. This is Samsung's answer to Apple?
The market is becoming mature. It is pretty difficult to add new features that cause people to think they gotta have that new phone, I've waited a couple stages of evolution already, like from a Nokia FP to an iPhone 5 to an iPhone 7, where I'm at now. But unless the mythical "gotta have" feature comes around, I'll run it until the batteries go, or I drop it in the ocean or something.
Let's remove the Apple stuff, just so we can avoid the cherry picking that often happens here from some of the people who hate all things Apple.
Let's take an example of a small computing device like the Raspberry Pi. Let's also assume it meets that 50 dollar limit. So in making it repairable by the consumer, the manufacturer would need to make certain that a stockpile of parts were on hand. This is a problem that manufacturers have today with device design. There are some venerable semiconducter components that are still produced years after their initial release - like the 555 timer chips and the amazingly elderly but still capable 2N3055 Power transistor - but many devices are cancelled abruptly and with little notice.
Its quite a gamble for the manufacturers. with replacement parts now. Imagine having to stock parts so that grandma can fix her iPhone 4, or old Nokia Feature phone.
The prices would soar.
I suspect a lot of this right to repair started with people being pissed that after abusing the crap out of their phones, they couldn't just go to WalMart and buy a replacement battery and pop it in. When the real problem is that they should quit abusing the damn thing.
My parable of all this is that my son is on my family plan, and he came in with the wife and I to trade up We all had iPhone 5's. Mine was pristine, and battery still held a like new charge. Hers looked very good, but she didn't take as good care of the battery, so it was a little soft. His looked like what I'd seen so many other young peoples phones. Cracked bezel, scratched case, battery not so hot.from many discharge to shutoffs and charging with dodgy power sources. So another case of what level of use and abuse should the mfgrs be held to?
Re water damage. I won't look at them any more. A friend wanted her's repaired after the cat peed in it. After disassembly and queasy work of cleaning it, I simply coudn't get it working again. So I managed to buy another one of the same model, re-install The OS and Programs and files form a time machine backup, and get her back in business. She promptly spilled soda on her new laptop.
So I consider water damage as total destruction now.
Some enterprising manufacturer make say, a completely user repairable smartphone, and let the market decide.
I can repair a present day smartphone as long as I can get the parts for it.
But that's another thing. How long does the right to repair enforce availability of all of the parts in that smartphone. 10 years? 25? forever?
Modular or component level repair?
What level of acumen is the baseline user? Someone like me, who has operated on chips themselves, or Grandma who has never dissasembled anything?
then there are power issues. Short out or damage that LiPo? scary stuff.
Then we get ot the upgradeability. Will this phone be required to have upgrades for lifetime?
I'm basically seeing this repairable phone as something huge and thick, and very expensive as a stockpile of every part or module is needed and the space requirements for making it possible to change the parts is added.
This is crux of the problem that I was pondering the other day as well. In order to have freedom and a free society, it means that it makes it very difficult to take away rights, arrest, detain, put into a mental institution, or take away guns until AFTER a crime was committed.
Exactly the problem. I started a listing of issues involve, d last night, but I'm out of town and it started getting confusing (long hiking vacation and I'm beat. Let's see if I can make a condensed version of what has changed over time.
Today's society has a one strike and you're out outlook on both sides of the aisle. A frustrated young man, especially a teenager, who has been told his whole life how worthless and evil he is, has nothing to lose. There is a good chance he has been drugged to keep him in line as well. so he has no idea of a healthy release of frustration or anger, or even just rambunctiousness. Strange side note. Responsible use of guns can even help. I know for myself, target shooting is incredibly relaxing. A state of mushin. Who knew zen and riflery could be in the same sentences?
I wonder about the life of some of these people. I don't believe much in profiling, only some trends.
I definitely do not accept that violent video games have a toxic effect on people. I play some seriously violent games, and violence in real life never crosses my mind. Is it possible that the violent games might have a calming effect overall?
Now as to what to do. Non-violent felons should have the right to bear arms after release and parole if deemed acceptable. I guess that might be up to their parole officer.
Mental states. This one really has to have a lot of actual discussion instead of the usual bs. Almost no one except for hard cores would think that this latest shooting perp wasn't a kook. Or the Sandy Hook nut - he looks like a junior head of the Heaven's gate whackos.
But as usual, we are getting the typical crap of calling these things false flag operations. Weird how kooks on both sides think that Sandy Hook was a Democrat operation and 9-11 was Republican. all ostensibly for gaining control of America.
That shit's gotta stop. One of the interesting things is seeing where the money has been coming from. I have some grave concerns about that.
We have to face it. There are influential people out there who want no regulations at all, and some likewise kooks who want no guns in civilian hands.
There has a be a discussion for a meeting of adult minds.
As you say, hind sight is 20/20, but at what point is it ok to stop someone based on a guess of what they might do, and how far can you really go, and still try to say that society has freedom. Can you interview the person, maybe, can you arrest them on the spot, probably not depending on the circumstances.
My guess is that you don't arrest them, merely confiscate the weaponry and catalog it for future release.
If I might note a personal experience, a fellow who lived up the road from me was really into his guns. One day his 7 year old son who is the same age as mine, brought one of his rifles to the bus stop, and was threatening to shoot other children, my son included.
The police confiscated his weapons on the rationale of his weapons storage being so unsafe that a 7 year old could access them and shoot other children. The guy claimed it was a violation of his second rights. Possibly. But with everyone else in the neighborhood owning, it's very likely that someone in a fit of anger because his own child was killed would gut shoot the guy just to watch him flop around and bleed out.
It's kind of bordering on pre-crime type limitations. You can't arrest som
Yikes! I have to apologize there! Caught at a bad moment, I resorted to bullshit myself. And in the middle of a real conversation. My wife would say I deserve to be shot.
You can claim one major blast at my idiocy, so have at it - I deserve it.
This doesn't solve the problem though. The root problem is not the guns, these are being used as tools, the root problems are these individuals. Taking away the guns from everyone, because of a few bad apples is not only punishing lots of people who don't commit crimes with these guns, but also not actually solving the underlying problem that is causing this.
Full stop there Alex. Tell me exactly the proposed laws that take away everyone's guns.
This is where the gun nut crowd always goes. If there is any law whatsoever, you scream and yell and tear your hair out claiming just as you did, that there is an effort to totally disarm each and every American.
Well there, Alex, I'm going to have to call bullshit on you. I've heard the total disarmament of every American argument when talking about trigger locks or gun safes. You want no restrictions at all and want everyone regardless of mental or criminal state.
It's a band-aid that makes it look like something is being done, but isn't fixing the problem, and has lots of collateral damage as well, like taking away people's rights that are in the constitution as being "off limits".
Oh bullshit again. I've had and heard all of the arguments, and it isn't a digital situation. You and the NRA and your Russian backers spread that bullshit long and hard.
psst, yes, it appears that Russia has given money to the NRA in accounts they don't have to make public to pay for the politicians they own. So keep that Russian money coming. Russia is the true home of patriotic Americans. Who knew?
Banning the assault-style weapons for everyone obviates the need to differentiate people on mental health basis. Yes, I realize that may require amending the US Constitution, but it does seem like the best option for stopping these assaults. At some point, the inalienable right to life has to beat the alienable right to arms.
I'd love to see the documentation on how the well regulated militia is regulated. I like firearms. I think that a lot of people worship them, and I want to see just which militia they belong to and how they regulate themselves well.
The GOP wants to shred the 4th and 1st amendments (to protect the 2nd?) because the hate freedom.
Although in this case, they will throw blame around, and have the added advantage of complaining if the FBI took the lad's constitutionally mandated access to buying them.
The FBI not taking obvious tips and especially blatant threats seriously would seem likely to have a strong correlation.
At what point do you swat the young guy and remove his weapons?
Is removing weapons from a person that has committed no crime a violation of his or her second amendment rights.
What is the metric?
This only looks simple to people who forget they are looking in reverse, which is acutely sharp and unerringly accurate.
Ever see the shit young people write? Damn, should we institutionalize every student who says "I could just kill myself" or tells another they'd be sorry is they did something?
I know of a kid that teachers thougtht was a risk because they overheard him talking about dark matters with another lad. Found out they were talking about how their characters died in a video game. Something "real violent" - Super Mario Brothers.
So now, tell me. What is your metric, when do you step in? And how much do you err on the side of caution? Are you willing to brand perhaps half of young people as mentally ill?
How about appropriately blaming the Police and FBI that ignored multiple blatant opportunities to catch that nutjob. Heck, he used his real name to threaten school shootings online, and one of his relatives called the FBI tip line in January.
If the FBI pre-emptively took his weapons, you'd be screaming spittle faced that they were denying the nut's second amendment rights.
Meanwhile you and the other Russian Trolls and bots are having a field day, many rubles await you, tovarish!
Annnnd, what happens when I'm trying to back away from danger into some tall grass; is it going to let me, or is it going to overrule the human? I'm sick to death of engineers, etc., thinking they've thought of everything, to the detriment of the unsuspecting users, decades later.
So you've already decided that this is going to happen? Having a backup camera already, tall grass doesn't look a thing like a car or a small child, so it won't be hard to electronically differentiate. Just sayin.
And what about your constitutional right to run into things? Something something liberals.
Anyhow make certain you start cutting the grass in your backyard again, if that's what you are worried about. Those damn teenagers are hiding in it.
Every reply I have gotten to this post seems to reply with an argument basically saying that "bad" people cant get guns and if my mandated "everybody carry" law were in effect they would all of a sudden have a gun.
Huh? While I never ever said or implied such a thing, First off, you gotta define what bad is. So we'll start with a few questions I'll ask and then give my answers.
Should this kid have been allowed to purchase a weapon?
To me, the answer is an obvious No. The boy had a record of serious mental issues.
This seems to be a common thread among these shootings.
Should a rifle designed specifically designed for killing humans be available to people who exhibit the likelihood of using that tool to kill other humans?
No
I never said "implied "fuck with me and you're dead" approach.". Its more of an implied "think before you do something stupid" law.
A couple points here. I've spoken with people who have left no question in my mind that they are hoping to kill someone. Ever seen that gleam in someone's eyes when they no longer look quite human?
And yeah, actual background checks with information from actual mental health pros won't prevent everything. Many opponents of any sort of restrictions argue that point. That's making perfect the enemy of good. Do you figure the Republican wall will stop every single Mexican rapist from entering the USA?
Say I wanted to kill my neighbor, chances are I wouldn't need a gun.. However I could go get one rather cheap, without any sort of background check or anything within a few hours. So disarming law abiding citizens is a criminals wet dream, you're talking to a former criminal.
It kinda already is a criminal's wet dream. And you somehow managed to accuse me of saying I want to disarm law abiding citizens. Stop that. I never said that, and I don't want to. I don't want mentally ill people to own and use.
Unfortunately, the NRA and politicians who have been bought with Russian money, Russian trolls and some citizens who love guns more than life itself have so far demanded and insured that the mentally ill have a right to own guns, and are perfectly happy with the mentally ill killing people.
And people wonder why the population replacement rate (fertility rate) is at a record low. Who the hell would want to attempt to shag someone or date in is this environment? Hello right hand.......
As usual we punish the innocent, and the people like Lauer and Weinstein will find a way to still be assholes. This is a self correcting problem, as many victims will decide to go same sex, or become cat parents.
That being said, as more and more men check out of the relationship market, it is amazing to think that society has managed to make life with a member of the opposite sex and having children so repugnant as to stifle one of the basic instincts.
The black transgendered lesbian with the most disabilities, of course. Don't you know anything? We no longer need discussions, we just ask the most marginalized person in the room, as their opinion is now law
Ah - the victim version of the argument from personal incredulity.
To figure out the Russian trolls, bots, or their useful idiots here in the states, you just look at the content. Often strange syntax, howaboutism, continued reference to the defeated candidate. As people become more used to the sillieness, it just becomes sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Consider this: one person says that they are disappointed that something in the code won't be accepted because it conflicts with something else that needs to be there. A second person says, "*hugs*" as an expression of sympathy in response. That second person is now on warning for violating community standards.
Is THAT something you want in your community?
I just think it is weird and mentally sick that some people interpret a hug as "I want to fuck you!" But if they do, I guess we just have to remember that there are fellow employees that we have to watch very carefully what we say when they are around.
This. It actually sounds like something I'd read on the Onion.
Except that it is happening in multiple places. NBC, has reacted to Matt Lauer's sexual shenanigans by enacting a new set of workplace rules that sound like a nightmare. Employees are required to report their's or any other employee's romantic liasons to Human resources. Being a snitch is now required - you can get in trouble if you don't. There are very strict rules on hugging another employee. A quick hug, immediate relaease, then back away to avoid any further contact. Even MarySue hates it. https://www.themarysue.com/nbc...
Other rules are that two people taking a taxi together is now verboten. And just so vegans don't feel left out, you cant take one to a steakhouse. I shit you not.https://pagesix.com/2017/12/25/nbc-tightens-sexual-harassment-rules-following-matt-lauer-mess/
Why on earth would they do this? In the #metoo age, a company that allowed a man to say go out on a date with a victim, and she didn't have a good time can be successfully sued for millions. One of the prime prosecution statements will be that the company culture encouraged this. So companies will now fall over themselves to demonstrate that they are against sex or any situation that might encourage interactions that might lead to males and victims interacting in any way that any person might interpret as sexual in nature. This is the future.
If/. adopted the BSD code of conduct, your comment would be in violation at a minimum of "Unwelcome comments regarding a person's lifestyle choices and practices".
Only if you are male.
This is probably not going to work out like some folks think.
Total avoidance is a fine and effective way to comply 100 percent with the dictated behavior. No other communication except for a minimum to do the job.
I worked years ago in such a system. Those people who were the target did a simple risk/reward analysis, and did just that. It's inevitable. You find yourself second and third guessing every statement or posting for possible offensive statement , and you end up deciding it isn't worth it. It will happen again.
A militia is armed members of the community that help to defend that community and their nation against invaders and tyranny. A disarmed people cannot provide a militia. In the language of the late 1700's well regulated meant functional or working. A disarmed people cannot be a functional or well regulated militia. Only an armed populace can form an effective well regulated (functional) militia.
Thus the 2nd amendment to ensure that when and if needed the minutemen could respond to defend. That has not changed.
So do you have SAMS and tanks and pilots at the ready, when teh guvmintz gonna try to take over?
We've seen what the American armed forces can do against lightly and even WW2 level armed populations.
Because unless you have a lot of first class ordnance at the ready, the revolutionaries are gonna be decimated. Russia may be willing to help. Good tanks and fscking awesome fighter jets.
Another problem with discussing gun control in the aftermath of a mass shooting, is that gun control advocates tend to let their emotions get away from them, and say a lot of silly things that are factually incorrect about "machine guns" and "automatic rifles" (both of which are illegal in America).
Don't you know it. Parents of dead children say the silliest damn things.
The premise you bring up is correct, but utterly pointless and signifies absolutely nothing.
The point is, the Politicians who are owned by the NRA just don't want people saying anything at all, ever. And they won't do anything anyhow. Voters can scream and yell all they like, but the politicians don't work for the voters.
And recent revelations are looking more like they are getting laundered money from another government.

Please... The obvious point is that it didn't influence shit.
Oh, Boris. Just wait until yo see just what it influences
I have a much shorter code of conduct:
Don't be an asshole. If you are behaving as an asshole you are given one chance of behaving like a mature adult, if you don't you can leave.
Who determines what being an asshole is?
If /. adopted the BSD code of conduct, your comment would be in violation at a minimum of "Unwelcome comments regarding a person's lifestyle choices and practices".
