  1. Re:tree grafting is common practice on Tree's Leaves Genetically Different From Its Roots · · Score: 1

    Not necessarily.

If you ever look at a large nursery catalog, you may see that a specific apple tree is available with a variety of root stocks (often patented/trademarked). These various root stocks aren't necessarily from different species of trees, but instead come from different cultivars of that same tree.

What you end up with is the ability to buy a truck-load of apple trees with an apple root stock that has adapted to better survive cold winters (at the expense of larger fruit, for example).

  2. Re:Uh... Howzat? on Tree's Leaves Genetically Different From Its Roots · · Score: 2

Or, at a different level, consider how large colonies of trees can share the same root system, specifically the poplar family.

This would allow a shared root system to adapt independently of the trunks/limbs/leaves so that you get a root stock adapted to its specific soil type, while at the same time you get mutations up top which introduce better adaptations for the world above.

    Trees are awesome.

Label me flamebait if you'd like, but with the over-population problem facing us, just a bit more troublesome as it's ever been, why are we so concerned about how to increase the life-span of the average dolt?

I see many of them, while I commute my 1.x miles on a bike to work, yapping away on their devices; ignoring signs that are there for a reason.

My own physical and mental capabilities are superior to that of the average dolt, and when I notice someone that seems like they're going to blow through a stop sign, I ease up.

This is work that I have done to increase the odds that my offspring survive.

The further we venture into the land of reduced fatalities (by any means) the further we reduce the odds of our survival as a species.

I had it for quite some time, and then somewhere along the line I realized I needed a new motherboard. I decided to check out what they had in stock and ended up getting an Asus board from them.

It's worked well, but I would likely have been better served to sell the card and get a motherboard that wasn't an ugly step-child model, since I have been unable to upgrade the memory to the advertised 16Gb. Hell, I've spent a few hundred bucks on a few different sets of DIMMS trying to get the board to 16Gb to no avail.

Quite an expensive gift card it turns out to be.
