    They 'recommend' to use FLOSS over closed one, I haven't RTFA yet, but it is exactly what they say in Vietnam.

    And they should forbid all pirated software too, if they do that, Vietnam will be FLOSS heaven :)

    To cut cost.

    Yep, 90% software in Vietnam are pirated (I doubt it even go to 98%+), but the government can't use to many pirated softwares.

    And FYI, the last time VN bought MS Office, they have to pay 20m$, and it is a *big* amount of money in VN.

    Too bad, most people here use the English version even if there is a Vietnamese one. If you want to use a computer here, you *MUST* know English.

    The reason for this is that people are 'used' to use English software, they don't know how to use Vietnamese one, how ironic.

    There are many reason for this, one of the most important reasons is that there is no standard for words that are related to computer, 'file' = 'tep', 'tap tin', ' ho so' etc.... everyone use their own version of that word. And I am saying this as someone who is translating OO.o to Vietnamese. Vietnamese government is trying to switch to OO.o/ODF completely, so they can save 20m$ buying MS Office.

    There is a serious cultural issue here that prevents Vietnam from taking advantage of Linux.

    Yeah, they even go crazy with windows 7 just because the notepad & calculator look 'shinier with big, nice buttons'.

    I am in HanoiLUG, so I have some infos about this, sure it won't mean in the next few months all computers of Vietnamese government will use FLOSS, I even doubt that there will be any changes at all, but this is just the beginning. At least some people realized that there are other options than MS softwares.

    ... because VNese government aren't switching from legal copies of windows, but from pirated ones. Even in the government sector, 50%+ softwares are pirated.

    How is the CPU temperature compare to Vista?

      Vista run fast enough for me (A Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB Ram and a Nv 8600 card), but what is keeping me from using it is the temperature, under 100% CPU load, it will fry my laptop CPU/GPU, and with recent Nvidia card problem, I don't want my laptop to die too soon.

      Here is what I get from 3 OSes:
    - Vista: Idle: 49oC (fan running), full load = 70oC+!
    - XP: Idle: 43oC (fan running), full load = 66oC, GPU temperature = 56oC
    - Linux: Idle: 44oC (fan is not running), full load = 66oC, GPU temperature = 45oC

    I don't really an office user so I don't know how OOo compares to MS Office (even Google Doc is enough for me). But I think OOo should provide enough functionality right? Could someone please give me a quick comparison between OOo and MS Office?

    They will arrest you directly instead.

    This new 'restriction' is not really a restriction, they just need a tool to keeping a tight grip on bloggers. They already has something else to arrest anyone they want, as this is written in Vietnamese law:

    - The communist party of Vietnam is the only political party in Vietnam
    - All action that is against the government or the nation is strictly forbidden.
    (roughly translated)

    Yes, the previous generation choosed communist, but it was the only way to gain independence back then. We have China (ROC) in the north, the French in the South. And the only force that can prevent us from being enslave one again is the communist.

    So at least we got a bed to sleep ;)

    So free as in 'freespeech' is worse than 'free beer' here.

    FYI, Vietnam is under an economic reform, but that doesn't mean more freedom for citizen, the upper leaders still want to keep a tight control for everything, they still fear what has happen to Soviet will happen again. Back in 2000 we even had a 'great firewall' like china too, though it is just a simple filter, not a grand one like the one in China :)

    As a Vietnamese myself, I don't really mind about the new restriction, it has alway be like that anyway, not just the communist, but long before that, it has somewhat become one of our 'tradition'.

    One last thing about our government, they aren't evil, they are just very incompetent.

    Oh, mine doesn't work at all, I have to remove it and change the config file. That is one of the linux's weak points, upgrading often make thing break while they shouldn't break at all.

    I've grown so attached to some extensions I'll very soon stop even consider anything not having them.

    How long till they start making browsers with a "firefox plugin compatible" feature?

    Kinda like asking Linux to compatible with all Windows programs. I have that problem too, i love linux, but there aren't any music player like foobar2000 on linux (wine is not the answer), some another programs too, so I still have to stick with XP.

    I have read somewhere that NCQ here is to help the OS follow the speed of the HDD, not for the HDD to follow the speed of the OS.

    If you RTFA, then you will know that is not the pumpkin he carved, he used CNC machine to carve his face on a pumpkin, not a demonic face. It is still incredible though

    If you want to have more "interesting" test you should try Vietnam, it also has the same censorship as China, if not worse, because they don't have a system like the great firewall so they decided to block everything, for example a few months ago the whole wordpress and blogspot got blocked (lucky for my, they just unblocked it lately), and the internet connection quality is just plain suck.

    So you can find rarer files with Emule. The reason for it is pretty simple, all the peer in torrent have the same file set, so all the bandwidth they have go to that file, while in Emule people often keep a lot of different files, so the bandwidth have to divide between them, I have even see some people with 10+ TBs of files on Emule. Anyway, I use both of them, torrent to get the file, emule to reupload the file I downloaded from torrent to edonkey network and to find some rare files.

    ... I see that tests that requite high computational power like BYTE Unix or Compilation is getting slower with each version, while disk benchmarks show that newer version is better. I am not an IT student so I can't really say anything about it, but maybe there are changes in kernel/Ubuntu that make disk operations faster while adding new works for the CPU to do.
