    They'll only charge the user for free videos. If an uploader puts a price on a video, Google will take a bigger share of the fee if the video becomes more popular, which leaves less for the uploader. Theoretically, this share might even become 100%, leaving nothing for the uploader!

    You definitely need to tune your machine. I run Thunderbird 0.1 on a Cirix 133 mhz with 48 MB RAM without problems! Alright, sometimes I have to wait a little bit (about a second) for a screen to open, but after that everything works just fine.

    "Stylish" and "geek toys" like this are mutually exclusive aren't they?
    It doesn't have to be... at least if you look at the gear. The problem are the people using it. Stylish glasses still look horrible on a geek, and a sportsman wearing this surely doesn't know to use the geek features.

    Using Word is always a pain, that has nothing to do with speed... Usually I prefer using Notepad on Windows machines.

    Altavista bragged about how DEC Alpha CPUs, with their 64 bit CPUs returned results faster.

    This was exactly what AltaVista was designed for! AltaVista was created to promote DEC equipment; to show what powerful applications could run on their machines. And it did this job really good.

    He is a usability expert NOT a design expert.

    This is absolutely true, and this is exactly the reason why designers _should_ take him seriously. In fact he explains on his site exacly why his site looks this way. Everybody has his specialism, and a certain task according to his knowledge. He is a usability expert and admits that he isn't a design expert.

    The problem is that most design expert don't recognise that they aren't usability experts. Just like they are no networking experts and system administration experts. They trust others to maintain the servers and the network, why can't they just do the same with usability???

    9. URL > 75 Characters
    Not even realistic, we're past little html pages now, it's something called dynamic content. and without HTTP_GET you will be forced to fill out a form of where you would like to go (Think Web Application, Web Application...).

    When I'm talking to someone on the phone and want to showm him a web page, I need a short URL. The use of dynamic content doesn't force you to make difficult to read URL's. The Dutch newspaper Telegraaf has for each item an URL consisting of the date and some keywords from the article, there even appears no number in the URL!!!

    A few years ago, Jakob Nielsen was one of the few persons caring about usability. He did a lot for the community, and his AlertBox contained interesting articles wit a lot of practical tips.

    But nowadays, Jacob has nothing to tell us anymore. Usually, his Alertbox contains well-known facts like the ones referenced to in this /. item, or only propaganda to sell his reports. I don't want to buy his report about the use of Macromedia Flash searchfunctions in intranets, I just want some practical information on how to make my sites more usable.

    I know that I can find this kind of information on a thousand sites, and Jacob's site used to be one of them. But at this moment there is only one way to use his knowledge: pay for his reports and consulting.

    This is not completely true. Depending how you configure your spam filter, person B might find his rejected mails in a special folder and can mark the 'horny slut' mail as a regular message. This way, the words 'horny' and 'slut' will be moved from the spammy words list to the accepted words list, so person B will receive his e-mail again.

    It is true that this makes the spam filter less effective, but it will still work, sinve in the end the filter will learn the difference between the legitimate 'horny' mails and spammy 'horny' mails based on other words.

    I don't agree with you on the superiority of PalmOS (I'm a happy user of my Palm III for some years now). But size, reliability, and battery life aren't the most important features. They would be if everybody choses rationally.

    People accept a shorter battery life when they get a color screen in return. And size is not as important as having bluetooth and GPRS.
    In Europe PalmOS has lost the battle for the PDA from Microsoft.

    The hardware requirements for the Microsoft products are higher, but just like people judge their PC's by processor speed, they judge their PDA by memory. In other words, they will always think that the PDA with the bigger memory is the best, even if this PDA is less responsive.

    No matter what you choose, there will always be some people who dont like it.
    A few years ago I worked for a company who had the perfect solution. They created a gift list with about 15 equally valued items on it. I remember the traditional food-and-drink box, a darts board, a clock and the option to donate the money to charity. Everybody filled in a form and this way everybody got exactly what they wanted!

    (Important note: I work for a POS software company, and my opinion is therefore certainly biased!)

    I think that the very first thing you should do is create a big wish list about the functionality you want, and indicate the priority of all your wishes. You're telling that you prefer a Linux based system, but most certainly you'll have to give up functionality for this wish. Look specifically at the back-office, since most POS systems offer all the basics.

    I think that the flexibility of the application will not be a problem in an installation of this size. My experience is that vendors are willing make customisations to get big clients like you. At least, the company I work for works that way.

    I have applied for several jobs in the Netherlands and Spain, and I was never asked to do a written test. Even if some of these jobs involved a lot of written communication to our customers, they did not test me on this.

    Your body simply isnt made to spend eight hours in a chair! Even the best possible chair is only a fix.
    I also have an office job, but I try to change possition as much as possible. I do a lot of phoning while Im walking around (for long phone calls I go to the garden). For writing documents I take my laptop to any place I like; sometimes I even sit on the floor. Furthermore, even though I have a good quality chair, I change my chair every few hours with my colleague, who has a different model. The point is to move around.
