    Can you give a reference for that? I was not aware of the hinese executing people for petty crimes, although they did execute people for bribery and grand larceny, which are not usually considered to be petty crimes.

    It is free to the public. They are going to charge governments, military organizations, etc for the certified signal.

    Who would buy cars from a company with a reputation for producing unsafe cars? Or drugs from a company that consistently killed people dead? If you don't trust a company, you don't buy from them. And if the company does you wrong, you punish them with civil or criminal justice.

    By the time you are "killed dead" it is already too late for you.

    Before we ask whether something is art, perhaps we have to specify what we mean by art and, presumably, what we mean by entertainment.
    If that question remains unanswered, there could be no meaningful discussion of whether something is art or not.


    A simple (and simplistic) definition is that art aims at making one a better person while entertainment is just a pastime. By that definition computer games (most of them anyway)
    do not qualify as art.

    So who grants the rights in that case? Do they exist in themselves in a sort of political vacuum? Please don't tell me that the rights are some inalienable part of the human nature. If that were so, how come the concept of free speech, etc had not existed until a few hundred years ago (the Enlightment).


    The freedoms are a part of our outlook on the human condition and are upheld through the laws.
    Perhaps it is too much to say that they exist because of the laws, rather they exist because fo certain ideas which are embodied in the law.

    Rights by definition may not be subject to any law. They existthrough providence, divine or not, and therefore are not subject to the whims of a filthy democracy. This is why Canadians have "hate speach" laws in place. Thanks for playing "Who Wants to be a Freeman".

    Pray tell me what is non-divine providence? And how is it that rights are not subject to the law? They exist because of the law! Thanks for playing "Who Wants to Be a Political Philosopher". Please do not try at home.

    However the evidence turned out to favour the theory but not the expectations.

    You are mistaken - plenty of statisticians and engineers have to do things like that on a routine basis.

    In a lot of statistical application, for example, 10000 or 1000000 data points is not unusual.

    Of course your typical office worker will probably never have any use for applications like these.

    You forgot "solving systems of 50,000 equations." People always bring that one up, as unrealistic as it.


    What is so unrealistic about it? Have you ever tried solving an eigenvalue problem for 10000x10000 matrix in MATLAB? It takes about an hour on a dual PIII, 800mhz with 1Gig RAM.

    Things like that come up a lot more often that one would expect.

    As far as I understand, cosmological theory indicates that the universe has been exapnding at the speed of light from the time of the Big Bang.

    Therefore if the Universe is 15 bil years old it should be about 15 light years in diameter.

    Heck, just a hypersonic projectile and/or missile would really change the landscape for Ballistic Missle Defense. Having a velocity several times faster than your target is a major advantage.

    You should realize that a of a nucler warhead in space is moving at around 7 km/second (see http://www.fas.org/rlg/990504-nmd.htm, for example). That is approximately Mach 18.

    There is no way any jet in the atmoshere can get anywhere close to that speed.

    The alternative of government forcefully making the populace pay for unpopular things (by this I mean things they don't go out of their way to pay for voluntarily). Not a good alternative in my opinion.

    Sure, unpopular things like universal vaccination or interstate highways.

    In fact if you store a game per atom all of the universe is barely enough.

    The estimated number of chess games is 10^80. The estimated number of all particles in the universe (a lot more of them than atoms) is 10^100.

    Also, if you have 10 billion computers, each computing 10 billion positions a second, it would take you only 10^60 seconds to enumerate them all. According to the physicists the universe has been in existence for about 10^18 secs.

    Of course you probably would not to have to enumerate all positions to solve chess, but the numbers are telling.
