Disappearance? No. Another tragic suicide by carbon monoxide. You'd think the SP's would find a new way to commit suicide after they realize their crimes, but for some reason they always use the exhaust-pipe-via-garden-hose-to-the-entire-home trick.
No. That's walking on someone else's property with your feet or driving in a car or whatever. Copying is copying. Not rape, baratry, theft, running a red light or shooting a deer out of season. Words have power. I am here to keep the safety on. No conflation. "Saddam 9-11 9-11 Saddam terrorist 9-11 Saddam". Simple wordplay, and a lie that kills a million people is not only manufactured, but crafted so the liar can deny he actually said it. Words can kill. Imprison. Create a police state. Copying is not theft. And eventually we'll have object printers, fabricators that can make anything. Imagine the "theft" that will happen then. I recall that every copying machine in the Soviet Union -- every typewriter -- was registered so that documents could be traced back to their originator. We were aghast. And now we have printers that hide our ID code in the printouts, and the gubmint wants to track every word we say, every thing we read on the internet in real time, forever, and record it all. We are the Soviet Union... and it all starts with words.
Tax it thusly: if someone copies your work, say, on the internet, and you sue and claim three billion dollars in damage, plus the old lady's dogs and grandchildren as punitive measures, then we tax you - retroactively!! -- for that amount. Same for the RIAA, the MPAA, and all the others who are claiming trillions of dollars in lost revenues in open court - if you do the simple math and extend their case claims to all downloads. They want to sue for those amounts of lost "property"? PAY for it, bitches. If property is property, even if it be imaginary, and one wishes to extract real pain and loss of income for its "theft", then one can pay for the property tax. At the rate you convinced some judge, senator, or private arbitrator to set.
That was Heinlein's proposal, more or less, in "Number of the Beast". You can raise you price, sure, to prevent automatic sale of your home at the price you originally declared and paid tax on, but you have to retroactively pay property tax at the new price you ask - due immediately. In the short run, a mess, but in the long run, prices are set at the maximum people wish to pay taxes on. Interesting.
This system doesn't have to be put into law. Just threaten to implement it, and a wonderful outbreak of sanity will flow from the SOB's at RIAA, MPAA, Scientology, and all the other copyright "property owners" who have made people's lives a hell for so long.
Property taxes, American style, were an invention for people to fund their local schools and no others. That's why Winnetka, IL can spend 16,000 bucks on a high school kid every year while Chicago spends 4,000. We had to use the Federal tax system to bring some sort of balance to the system, but even that is under attack.
Schools should be funded by Federal or State taxes (I prefer Federal - states can be disproportionately wealthy, esp. when the wealthy will move to a picked state and kick out the poor to raise the level on school funding), and the funds apportioned to every school per head count, not according to the wealth of the local landowners. The landowner school tax system has been the basis for our educational collapse, a major fountain of ignorance and racism, and is killing us economically. It has kept anti-Reconstruction going strong since the Civil War.
And the voucher system is nonsense. The poorest students will attend schools getting 3,000 - if a parent can spare it from the tax refund - a head while the usual wealthy suspects will spend as much as they can on their private super schools. No help there, hell, it'll be so much worse for the poorest. And like the HMO system did to the medical profession, 25 per cent of the money that used to go to the public schools will be siphoned off to corporate platinum parachutes, pure corporate profit and stock market games. In ten years, a Microsoft of schools will suck up all the profitable schools and the rest will have to be bailed out at taxpayer expense, since they won't have enough money per head to even pay the heating bills. The happy parents and kids of the superschool will see nothing wrong with the system, while the vast majority of kids will disappear from society, unremarked on except for the hostility from the superparents who have to pay taxes to bail the poor out at a paltry few thousand a head.
I'm with you. Kill the property tax school funding system. Fund schools from Federal revenues.
Your statements make no logical sense. The point is that CNN is firing him for speaking in his private life, on his own time. 8 years of training for a position is not even remotely connectable to the simple human right to speak.
A lot of people think the way you do. And an open air prison is the result. We do not give up our human rights to become employed. One doesn't have the right to speak out of turn on the job -- that is accepted common sense. But the idea that an employer can monitor your life, Henry Ford/Gilded Age style, to accumulate negative points to fire at will -- that is called prison. Slavery with a car. Thought and speech control.
And reporters -- even producers -- are NOT required to be without bias. They are required to pursue the truth, not pretend to be so stupid as so that they cannot hold an opinion. Truth is biased. The "bias" crap is murdering reporting. Hell, murdered, past tense. Bring back Murrow. Bring back all the CBS reporters from the best news era in the history of mankind. You don't hold an opinion until you become informed - that is a true lack of bias. After truth is found, then you are biased. You don't pretend that there are two sides to an issue after one side is exposed to be patently false.
Example: The Vietnam War was a con job, US when warmongers faked an attack by the Vietnamese so that the US would enter the war. That statement is considered biased, and a reporter would be sacked or marginalized if they stated it. But it is the damned truth: final evidence of the con was uncovered last year. BUT STILL it is considered a theory, a liberal dogma, because rightists will scream bloody murder for the head of the reporter would they hear of it, and no news chief wants to hear from his boss/network head/board of directors/CEO/President Cheney/Rush Limbaugh that he was keeping a biased liberal maniac liar on his staff. The pressure to suppress truth is overwhelming, and a generation of such suppression has produced a population that doesn't believe in anything, having been told that they are being fed biased lies from the most trusted newsmen on the planet. Global warming, evolution, overpopulation, pollution, economic disasters of budget cuts -- all things truths gain no traction in a population that believes that no one tell the truth.
In a world where everything is an "opinion", there is no truth.
Do remember that now the poor schmuck is naked and uninsured for any flareups connected to that surgery for the rest of his life, because in the US insurance companies are free to refuse the business. CNN may well have killed the producer. Not that anyone will care. We live in the wild. Unless we are executives, then we get a 20 million dollar payout when we get canned -- and probably guaranteed health coverage. So, peons live in the wild. The lords live in the castle on the hill. Wait, why do we live here, again?
"No, the federal government can't use the military on US soil for law enforcement purposes. "
Not any more. Bush requested and received the ability to override the Posse Comitatus Act. He can use the US military to police us on our own soil at his discretion. He also took over direct control of all the National Guards, also at his discretion. Didn't hear about that? Well, that's the "news" for you. It was all over the web last year, and Keith Olbermann may have spoken of it.
Bush has removed ALL limits on police and military power on US soil, and those actions which may be illegal are farmed out to private corporations (like torture and certain types of data mining). And he reserves the right to violate any law he chooses, as long as the Forever War lasts. The police state is here.
I know. But it's such a good statement. We should retcon history so that he did say it. Hell, we've made Gore say he invented the internet, so there's precedent for rebuilding reality.
"Anyone else besides me think the SCOTUS would wipe that particular provision off the books the moment that Harvard, Yale, et. al go to war with the RIAA?"
Not this SCOTUS. Bush loaded that quite well with pro-business judges. Young ones, too, so they'll be a probem for a half century or even more. Do not look for relief from the Imaginary Property crowd from those five. Reference Lawrence Lessig's noble attempt to void the 100+ year copyright by pointing out it was effectively eternal and thus violating the Constitution's design to release works into the public domain. The court's majority - not just Bushies, either -- stated that since the 100 years was a finite time period, the lockup was not technically eternal thus not violating the concept of release to the public domain. The sane counter that in 100 years time our descendants would not even understand what public domain was anymore, or that the future law would simply add another 100+ years, was lost on their ears. They are pro-business and pro-Imaginary Property.
Google is right to object -- and to block by helping Yahoo -- because Microsoft is an intensively abusive monopoly by culture and history and conviction. They're the neighborhood predator, and everyone living there knows it.
Google has become successful by being very good at what it does and does it without abusing its power. Microsoft, well, if the Gentle Reader can't recite a litany of even the most recent abuses, it's useless for me to list them. Go, Google.
Of course it should be blocked. This is the very definition of monopoly abuse: buy all your competitors with that giant stack of money gained from your monopoly, and crush them. Eventually, only you survive, and are richer than God. Given enough time, and no government regulation, you can buy the world.
Doesn't seem to make sense, invasionwise, for the USA to cut the cables. Why bother? If we invaded, believe it the cables would be down the instant the bombs arrived. Why bother telegraphing (groan) your move?
Could be one lousy set of coincidences. Happens. Says something that we automatically suspect the Cheney War Bunker of starting an invasion. Because he did it before? Not paranoid if you are facing a maniac with recent history of starting wars for national gain.
Could be Cheneyites just trying to cause problems in Iran. They've a history of nastiness in South America that would make your bowels liquefy. It's not past them to try it, but doesn't make operational sense for an invasion. Psi op, yes indeed, that makes sense. He's just a mean old fuck. Meanness defines his government.
Al Qaida never uses electronic communications in ops, not in successful ones, anyway. The 9-11 attackers, and bin Laden himself, only used face-to-face communications. Where's BL again? Can't find him, eh? Seem to work.
Futzing with spying is too complex for the real world. Anyway, the NSA has monitored those cables for years, no doubt. No need to splice, and that would be one hell of a splice, data processing wise.
Cutting is just simpler, works every time, and causes a lot of problems. Could be a way of ratcheting up harrassment of the Iranians. Considering that we declared their armed forces terrorists, I don't think cutting their cable is beyond Bush's moral limits.
Not paranoia. Our current Presidential brain trust lied to you before, at least 900+ times on record, to start the previous unprovoked invasion and conquest. It't not paranoid to mistrust scheming bastards who've tricked you so many times before.
Paranoia is, say, you thinking the corner newsstand is a CIA listening post established to monitor you. That would be a symptom of mental illness.
It's not paranoia when you suspect the man who runs the newsstand of plotting to assault children when he has, in fact, assaulted a 60,000 to a million children in the last six years.
Americans are not that amnesiac. Almost, but not quite.
I keep reading all these references to "conspiracy theories" that I haven't seen in this thread. Psi Ops: at least post a few conspiracy theories before you seed the "conspiracy theory" meme.
Oh, there's a weird one now. Thanks, Psi Ops!
Haven't seen an anti-American post yet either, tho I haven't read it all yet. I posted an evil Dick Cheney writeup; I don't think that counts. He is an evil fuck, and his brain trust at the Pentagon and the CIA are fully stupid enough to try such a lame stunt.
Or cables were cut accidently three times. And exit polls don't work after the year 2000.
Or there may be one idiot submarine commander swanning around cutting cables just to start a commotion. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. How is the cable "broken"? Is it really, or is there some sort of cascading bug in the underseas communications system. Trying to be fair here. Don't really see the sanity of cutting cables, but I never saw the sanity of blowing up a country that had fully opened the doors and surrendered, either. Sane people are not in charge right now.
Or Cheney's brain trust loosed the "Hackers cut power" meme just before they started severing multiple cables to the middle east in preparation for that damned Iran attack he wants so much. Cut one cable, cut two cables, oopsie here's Iran going dark.
With Cheney's crowd running the country, you have to posit a conspiracy of him not trying to start a war. He just doesn't care what you think. Iraq was him, all the way, feeding his lies to the President through his own personal three man intel reinterpretation squad. The man likes war. He wants the oil sewn up for the USA. His behavior has been consistent since the Ford presidency, the fake Soviet threat he faked up for Reagan, and the Iraq/Iran war he has so single-mindedly pursued; lie, mislead, plant fake news, control the message, kill massive numbers of people with no qualms, win. This pope was the Vatican official who personally approved the movement of accused pedophile priests from parish to parish to give them another chance. Not just an official, but THE official who masterminded the transfers and the cover ups.
Let me state the obvious: I don't take moral instruction from this immoral individual.
And I think he should perhaps give more thought to children who are actually alive and walking around rather than his obsession with the "unborn" which do not exist except as religious fantasies in the collective imagination of elderly Italian virgins who obviously have some real problems with relating to women/sex/babies.
He's standing in the flaming wreckage of a church ruined by paying out settlements to former children for all those decades of priestly rumpy-pumpy and the attendant lies. Pity he's not so wrathful about kids with pants around their ankles as the idea of someone jerking off into a dish.
Interesting. Is it possible that manufacturers pursue ever-shrinking devices mainly so that standardization cannot occur? Is the ever-"free" market arranging the furniture to keep prices high and interchangeability of parts impossible... yep.
Well, it won't last forever. (I may underestimate the power of rich people wanting more money). Optical interconnects will eventually evolve to the point where components can be swapped by simply unplugging and replugging, or perhaps components could communicate by simply "seeing" each other and transmitting data via light. Any number of factors will shrink CPUs and storage and RAM. We will see a standard laptop or table case in the next ten years or so, I feel.
Cult: organization pretending to be a religion. Keeps true beliefs secret from recruits, one would think because they would have no recruits if beliefs were known. Viciously attacks any and all who expose secret beliefs. Has tendency to lock people up, either through social pressure or actual locked doors. Uses any means possible to intimidate press, infiltrate government, and co-opt police forces. See: Moonies, Scientology, any number of local Jesus franchises in USA, and yes, even the Mormons, tho they succeeded in all points listed above so long ago that no one remembers they are a cult. Hell. the Salvation Army is a cult, but people rarely look at its belief system. A uniformed army, eh? But I digress.
