What is frightening as well, is the mere idea of giving computers decision power in anything, that has to do with shooting or killing.
What if, maybe in 10 or 20 years, on of those new statistical overlords predicts a terrorist attack in a neutral neighboring country? Who can prevent a 'unbureaucratic', 'heroic' general from stepping in and safe those poor civilians?
That's on of the many ways to start a war.
Do you know, what her Job is and how many files have been on that hard drive? Do you know, how many unreplacable pictures could've been on that hard drive?
IF IT'S TRUE, what she says, she's dammn right to sue them.
What she really wants is
1) an explanation how this could happen
2) an explanation why this won't happen any more
3) 100k$
Well, that's still a lot of money - but given the situation, Best Buy deserves a little bit of beating. And negative Publicity, of course.
I worked on an application using quite similar accelerometers, a few years ago. We used the ADXL103, while the Wiimote uses the ADXL303, which is basically the same sensor, but with three measured directions. What we tried to do was measuring distances - quite similar to the Wiimotes goals. What we found out, however, was, that the sensor just isn't exact enough to provide reliable velocity- or even position-Information. The problem is, that the provided accelaration-data have to be integrated (even twice, for position-measuring). That can't be done so easy, without adding up the noise as well.
It wasn't too much of a problem in the end, because we needed the sensors for demo-purposes only, but that was the problem we found out.
Here is a link to a picture. We used three sensors to measure X, Y and Z-directions,
the lines should return to zero after the vibrations, but they didn't;)

I don't say, that it can't be done, what I'm saying is: it might be hard.
...how many people complaining about Vista do that, because they really worked on it and dislike it, and, how many didn't use it but join in and do some Microsoft bashing.
I, myself, don't have any experience whatsoever on Vista, but the opinions I heard from experienced PC-users or coworkers/-students give me the impression, that I wouldn't like it very much. However, when asked about Vista, my answer is, that I myself wouldn't buy it for this reason and for that reasons, but I'm pretty sure, there are as well users, who like it and for whom Vista might be the right choice.
What I want to tell you is: you're free to criticise Vista or Microsoft or Bill Gates' weird haircut, but stay fair. In the interest of all of us and in the interest of the not-so-experienced users, who might rely on your comments.
Does anyone have some information regarding, how fast such sensor can be at the moment? Speaking in terms of scans per second. I used to work on a project dealing with a 3d laser scanner (although not in a military context ^^) and that one wasn't even close to being fast enough to sense and destroy a target before being blasted to pieces.
I'm currently learning Haskell at University. While most of the student regard it as awful, I love it.
It's pure simplicity, and as we all know simplicity = beauty.
I totally do understand, that they CAN prevent you from printing such a calendar for commercial use.
What I don't understand is the reason - other companies would spend big $ to MAKE people want to have a calendar with their products. What I want to say is: cracking down on your admirers won't lead to increasing numbers of them.
It was the same for my parents. They switched from MS Office to Open Office. My father, who has at least a little bit PC experience got used to it very soon, my mother was somehow irritated by the different names ("Word" vs. "Writer");) but using the software itself wasn't to much of a problem for her either..
I would call that a success
This looks like ritual dagger from outer space.

You can run - but you can't hide!

Harr!
They are grammar _nazis_, right?
^^
SU, grammar nazi! Did you consider that English isn't his/her mother tongue? If you want to correct him, do that in a polite way.
They are planning the same thing in Austria. What is happening to us?
