    I have downloaded an Apple fix, labeled 23/05-2004 (That's the 24th of May 2004), totaling about 700KiB and it updated the Help app. I think most of these issues are fixed in that update.

    That is fucking bullshit. I work for Dagbladets worst competitor and enemy and can say that they are as reliable as the other papers in Norway. A statement like the Wannabe tells is horribly wrong. In fact, there's just one paper in Norway that comes even close to the tabloids of England and USA, and that is the Søndag Søndag (Sunday, sunday) "paper".

    Well, you can read here on how MS got their ideas from Apple. They later bought a right to their usage when that pathetic loser John Sculley was head of Apple.

    Apple on the other hand, paid for legitimate access to Xerox, and it was cleared all the way to the top of the company. The techs at Xerox PARC did not like that Apple was allowed to take their ideas, because they knew that it was something unique while the suits believed the same as the suits at IBM, that it was childs play.

    I have seen the warning signs in the gas stations, telling everyone to not use their phones while in the petrol station. At least here in norway, they are everywhere.

    Aside from the occasional exploding batteries in Nokias, what on earth could make a spark in a regular phone? There's no high voltage circuits, no glow points.

    Why show a person on TV that obvoiously not want to be recoznized (however carefully concealed by the production)?


    That one is easy. It is always better to display the subejct of the story, like the raped in a rape case etc. than to obectify them. The story becomes more interesting and draws a larger crowd. It is also a part of the evidence chain, like interviewing a witness or other part. The viewer get closer to the story, even though i is just a large blob with a strange voice.

    Many people want to pay nearly nothing for a computer, and Apple has no offering in that market segment - even though they've got the best value in the high end of the market.

    Excuse me? What about the eMac? It is DAMN cheap to me an Apple, and here it stands out like the really, really, really good computer alternative in the sub 10 000 NOK (=1500 USD approx.) class. Weighing in at 1084,82 USD, that's not bad compared to the alternatives. Crappy Wintel boxes from no-name manufacturers or the low level Dells where the cheappest I found was 710 USD. Now, as some have found out, a relatively low price hike to Apple can pay off in copius ammounts. The SATS chain of fitness centers hace used iMacs and Dells. The iMacs are from 1998 and still functions like they always have. While the Dells have been through TWO more rounds of upgrades.

    For me, it's impossible that anyone buys the Dell / Microsoft TCO arguments. I believe in the right computers for the right purpose, but at the same time it delights me that Wintel becomes less purposeful for each hour on this planet. MacOS X, Linux, QNX (For thos mission critical tingys) and *BSD is taking over and it is a good thing. I have yet to hear about a Windows -> Mac switcher or NT / Server - > Linux switcher complain about the choice and go back.

    Because the Jaguar company spends literally hundres of millions on R&D, and, in addition, lose money to the Panther company.

    This may sound like trolling, but there is a fine line between patent rip-offs and industrial espionage. Know, I know that lately many companies have made a mockery of the patent system. Or rather, the patent system in the US is fucked up. This doesn't mean that the concept of the patent is a bad idea, just that is implemented wrong.

    I'm a student. I had a creative idea a year ago. I wrote it down and patented it. Now, it seems that a major European telecoms company is "developing" a system similar to mine. Right now, I have too much on my hands to deal with this, but they WILL know of me soon. And I'm reasonable. I'll let them buy the patent for a million USD or two. It'll make the tenfolds of that in just a year, but I'm not greedy.

    I dunno, but I bought a Dell øaptop from a friend that does Dell service. He thre in a cracked screen spare laptop that "trust me, it'll bee needed", as he said. And sure enough. After one week, the notch that holds the screen to the casing (That thingy that locks the computer) broke. Dell sent a new one in metal, to replace the flimsy platic thing. B fixed it. Soon, the CD drive went, one from spare. The plastic aroud the screen cracked, replace. The keybaord went south, replaced. The battery was worse than a mistreated iPod, one half year of service fom that one. Replaced. The floppy chocked, el replaco! The spare laptop was functional to some degree, with an external screen, but the the logic baord went. And the the logic board went on the other one as well, and I bought an Apple.

    I call bullshit!

    ROMS is the equal to our (In Norway) TONO. They collect money from radiostations, TV channels, concert venues, restaurants, bus companies, pubs, inf fact every place that dares to play a record they bought.

    TONO is a reedy organisation, that even demand that commercial websites pay 11 cents PER CLICK! for ANY music played, even if that makes most web-enabled music event go in instant red. Result: No-one plays music in web video, and TONO gets NO mney.

    A good friend of mine pays to be a member of TONO. Their band have been played a lot in radio, but so far the fee has been greater than the earnings.

    Enteties like ROMS and TONO exists for ONE purpose only, to earn enough to keep it self alive, along with a portion to the already-lots-earning artists and record companies.

    Yeah, I guess you're right. But sometimes I'm a bit stressed out and forget. If things are calm, I usually save manually. Maybe I should start using Vim at work?

    No, actually German Post did not get the actual Sasser worm, but they panicked after Sämpo had one loose in their internal network, so they did like Sämpo. Block A LOT of traffic. Unfortunlately, in doing so, they also blocked their own banking system from communicating properly and became "collateral damage" because the sysadmins panicked.

    • German Post
    • The british coastguard
    • Korean postal
    • The CAT / MR scanners at a Danish hospital


    These are some of the large-scale operations that were affected by the worm, some of the frantic preparing for the worm strike. I have never, ever believed for a second that the TCO for Windows is lower than e.g. Linux of BSD, past the first month of switching. Even with higher sysadmin costs, the overall increase in productivity equals this and then some. Christ, potentially sick people had to reschedule their CAT / MR exams because of a fucking Microsoft Worm (TM)?

    How much more are we willing to up up with? I made two switches, first from Windows to Linux and then from Linux to Mac. The only thing I regret is not switching earlier.

    Today, my employer lost 25 USD, since an article I wrote disappeared when Word crashed and I had to re-write it for one half hour. It seems the defaut Word behaviour in custom OEN installs that our IS get is to NOT autosave for recovery due to "performance issues"

    Lower TCO my ass.

    I'm not sure about this. Let us have a look at Sony Ericsson. Them design (mostly) their own phones in house and set the production away to Flextronics, practically outsourcing the production. But under no circumstances are Flextronics allowed to even hint that the phones they build from components are Flextronics brand phones. But maybe JoS has a special deal with IOPS.

    As for North Korea; true, they aren't exactly members of WIPO... :D But then again, that means you can rip as many military chorus CDs as you evercould want to...

    Why is it that the "design labels" of our days have the need for rebranding of far eastern goods? As someone already pointed out in this tread, this is a rebranded Iops player.

    I remember Bang & Olufsen when they launched their failed cellphone series. It was just a rebranded Ericsson phone, in three more colors at twice the price. My guess is that todays consumers are too vary of these things and JoS will fail unless they cooperate and innovate like certain other companies.

    The absolutely worst case of rebranding ever was the North Korean government: They bought / stole severeal Huyndai cars and rebranded them (illegaly) as their own brand. Everybody outside NK understood what was going on, but this was a publicity stunt for their own people to convince them that NK had an up to date booming car industry.

    As an 1GHz / 1GB PC user (at work), I disagree. My moms iBook G3 / 128 MB is faster than my 1,8 GHz machine at work. Yes, I know that there's something wrong with it, no, IS can't fix it. Thats why my eXPerience of Windows sucks, all day. and since nobody seems able to fix it, short of chucking the machine out and replacingit with an equally slow one, the eXPerience stays the same. I've been through three PCs there, that all displays the same retardness.

    Well, for one, it bogs down your network to a mush of syrup. All that looking for other hosts to infect really takes up a lot of capacity on the network. And the Sasser.D version is up to 1024 threads pr. CPU, up from 128 in the Sasser.B version...

    STAY AWAY from Kelkoo! I bleieved for a long time that Kelkoo was a "deal-finder", where products were ranged fair and square with the cheapest one first. Not so. A friend of mine has his products advertised on Kelkoo, and pays 385 USD each month. He has most of the products priced well below the large sites, in addidtion to CC payment and free shipping. But Kelkoo said that the system is click-based! And advised him to "click as much as you can on your own products to increase their rank".

    I think Yahoo bought a lemon when they acqured Kelkoo... Or maybe they just have a damn good buisness plan for them...

    Well, since I don't get paid to set up a Linux box at work, and because I have a desk that can be used by others. That's why I prefer to use my 15" Powerbook instead. It har backlit leys (useful in dark settings), a no-brainer WiFi network system and, most important: It has outstanding integration with Bluetooth. So I can sit at a press conferance ans send / recieve SMS while surfing with GPRS and transmit the Nikon D70 pics from the PCMCIA card, all at once.


    I also use, the most ingenous piece of software in a long time, Salling Clicker. Even (other) tech writers drop their jaw when they see the cooperation between the Clicker and iTunes / Keynote / The whole shebang.


    The main reason I don't use Windows is the utter incompetance of the IS dept. We have an IT dept. as well, and they use only Linux. If we got rid of the IS dept. and let the IT dept. set up a bulletproof Linux box, I'd use that instead. But as long as the Windows boxes REBOOT(1) when trying to print a page, I'll stick to my Mac.


    1) Seriously! They do! Three of the computers actually cold started, with the POST, whenever we tried to print. It was an error in the default Windows driver for the network card, I believe. It took IS 1/2 year to fix it, nothing happened until a gut from IT took charge.

    Then, you should join the Apple Developer Connection. I'm a (law) student, and joined it for 99 USD. I bought Apple computer equipment that originally cost 4300 USD for 3440. That's so cheap, that I probably will even out the resale value when I upgrade in a year or so.

    I'd take 400 DKK for 2048/256 any day!

    I live in Norway, and pay 55 USD for 512/128 HALF duplex! If I want the speeds you are talking about, I'd have to pay 80 USD, plus 10 USD (to the phone monopoly, since they are private and don't care if the government hates this "line lease" surcharge), and another 14 USD because I don't want the two-year tie-in programme.

    ....Rely on it. The online edition I work for has just as many Linux boxen as Windows boxen. And only 1/2 of them are serving pages. The only ones using Windows is us journalists and the suits. And we journalists could have done it with Linux as well. Although I prefer to do it (the writing, pervert! ;) with MacOS X

    I wanted to work at Apple - but they turned me down - quite rudely I felt given I was such a fan.

    Ah, sô! (Forgive me. I just saw Kill Bill 2) Therein lies the core of the problem. Well, it is better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all.

    I, for one, have gone the other way and become so impressed with the Mac, that I bought one and put literally on top of the Windows computer my workplace provides. Why? Because it is a pleasure to work with. It is not flawless, but with 90% less flaw, I'm a happy camper. Now if I just could get my GF from stealing that sexy mouse....
