Having worked with Tandem, I can tell you that a bullet stopping the system would have to be very, very well fired. In our Tandem systems EVERYTHING was at least redundant. Often put in two mirrored cabinets with internal redundancy. This meant that if you shot a bullet into one of the cabinets, it would probably function on the internal redundancy. If not, the other cabinet would take over. The system I know did not have a single unplanned second of downtime in 13 years. Actually, it did not have any downtime in that time, since the dual cabinet layout made it possible to do large scale updates of hardware and software without bringing the system down.

This article is mislead in so many ways. People here have covered the fact that BT and WIFI are ment to co-exist, so I'll skip that.

Anyone who have seen an Apple intergrate with an Ericsson t68i will be convinced that BT is a killer app. It works seamlessly and is so beautifully integrated that I could cry with joy when I get to send an SMS on-screen "just like that".

BT suffers from ONE thing only. Bastard companies that love proprietary devices. Like Nokia. Nokias BT headset twists the BT regulations by transmitting the audio through data profiles, not audio profiles like it is supposed to. So you can't get cheat headsets for Nokia until someone makes a data-only headset. This is killing BT, not lack of usage. BT along with Airport is a marriage made in heaven.

Visit us in Europe, and see that BT is in daily usage mr. Frankston.

BONUS: Try the Bluetooth pic-swap-game! The rules are simple. Be sure to have a cool picture of yourself on your fancy-schmancy phone. Nudeness optional, but recommended. Keep Bluetooth enabled on the phone (Notice how this does not drain your batteries like you were jump-starting an F-16) When bored, search for other phones in public places. When you finde a phone, transmit the picture and it will pop up like a message on the other phone. If the other person is cool and tech-savvy like you, (s)he will transmit a pic back. Yay!

They're accepted as part of the daily dealings with computers.

Aaah, but what happens when people find an alternative? My mom (yeah,yeah...) was shopping for a computer to use in web publishing. Previous OS: Windows 98 SE. She bought an iBook, and as a direct result the support phones to me has gone down from 2 a day to 2 a month. And then it's usually about the web publishing tool.

As a result of switching to MacOS X, life at work becomes unbearable for her. She gets pissed off if a flaky Win2k driver results in a 2-hour work loss, as we should be. The colleauges shrug it off andgo for a smoke while the computer reboots. How did we get used to this? I think we all should use an OS that is more stable than our everyday OS just to expect more.

Sometimes the bugs aren't in the code, but in the infratructure. Let me tell you the Saga of the Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse...
'Twas in the days where the Bluetooth system was in its infancy. XP just reached SP1 and MacOS X ruled the user-friendly skies. I borrowed a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse to test at home. As I read the description on the web page, I looked forward to the " effortless, cable-free connections with Bluetooth compatible devices*, including phones" as advertised on the web page.

I went home and tried to set up this little blue wonder. I was merrily greeted with a "FUCK YOU go buy XP" message on the screen of my Win2k machine. Oh fiddlesticks, I said to my self and phoned a friend with XP. We went to try the Bluetooth wonder on his machine. I popped the USB dongle in, and by the way it is a LONG dongle. The always-friendly message popped up on the screen: "Your system suck, upgrade to XP SP1 now", wich was fortunlately included on a CD with the mouse. I upgraded the system and half an hour later I rebooted (twice) and popped in the Bluetooth XP stack drivers. It seems that Microsoft shipped the Bluetooth stack in English, French (Probably not anymore), Spanish, Japanese, two types of Chinese, Portugese, Arabic, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, and German but not in Norwegian as the system was installed. It would not install, as I might be exposed to English in some menus and we all know that it could be fatal. So the installation was cancelled and I poured my self a hard drink of vodka on the rocks.

A couple of days later, I was at my mom's chopping down a tree in the garden. The Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer for Bluetooth was still in my backpack. I went to the iBook to do some mental meditation when I got a wicked, wicked idea. What if I tried the Bluetooth dongle on the iBook? What could happen??? So I tried it. I popped it in and the blue light went on, and... ...nothing. Not a driver request, no fretting about shelling out more dough to buy another OS, no nothing. I was a bit disappointed, but then I saw it. The Bluetooth rune symbol went on and the The Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer for Bluetooth finally worked. Not on ANY Microsoft product I tried but the iBook. And it worked perfectly from the get-go. When my phone recieved an SMS, it popped automagically up on the screen where I could type in a reply, add the phone # to the address book or make it fetch a cortado from the caffeine dealer down the street.

    Now that's good programming.

Disclaimer: I don't own an Apple, but I really like them. My home OS is RedHat 8. So now you know.

People have a choice. They do not have to buy the game and give it to their kids. I would never let my kids play this game, since I don't believe it is in their best interest. But I want to play it, and buy it. This chain is actively hindering me in buying it and thereby forcing me to take my business elsewhere. But if I just did that, they would not notice. This way, they notice.

BTW: I talked to a friend about the policy, and he agrees. He is in the process of redecorating and will not not buy the kitchen appliances, electrical heaters, TV or anything else from this store. A short introduction: My fridge kicked the bucket two weeks ago. I quickly started investigating where to buy a new and cheap fridge fast. The trip went to the Expert chain on the other side of the road and I inquired about the latest Whirpool fridges. I talked to the salesperson on the showroom floor and then went to the checkout to investigate the prices. I also started to look for a stove and a to-piece ceramic plate for later

There I saw a familiar sight. There was a poster of GTA3 along with a printed message saying "This store does not carry the following games: GTA3, GTA: Vice City and BMX XXX. because we don't sell violent games to youngsters. We boycott these games"

The really catered to the asshole in me and I asked exactly why they did not want to sell these games. The clerk stumbled out som answer like "We don't want young people to see graphic contents etc.". I asked her if she had actually read the covre of games like GTA:VC. The cover here is covered with a warning not to distribute to youngsters, approx 1/3 of the front in size. She had not.
I asked her if the store prevously had a practise of selling this game to children, thus ignoring the manufacturer's warning. She said no.
I then said that if you only sold the game to people 18 years of age, why boycott it? She could not give an answer to that.

I then spoke to the store manager and said: "I disagree to your boycott and have decided to cease all purchases from this store and all Expert stores until you let people think a bit for themselves. This wil cost you the following in lost sales in near future."

The owner really got something to think about then. He looked dumbfounded.

I walked out of that store and went to a mom-and-pop electronics storer that did not carry videogames at all and they were nicer and cheaper. After completing the purchases there I went to the Expert store and showed the manager the 3000USD reciept for sales he missed. I underlined that I would NEVER purchase anything there, but walk a click to the next store.

Again, I believe he started to think about the boycott.
