  3. Hand Held Media is Stupid on Bad Signs For Blu-ray · · Score: 1

There is no reason at all for any hand held media like CDs/DVDs to exist anymore. If I want to rent a movie, I buy the 24 hour license from Comcast digital cable - I can get it in HD and it's fine resolution. If I want a song, I either get it from a friend's CD or iPod or pony up the $0.99 to iTunes. Blu-Ray is technology looking for a home, and there will never be a home.

At CA you could only look at mail between 9 - 10 AM, between noon and 1 PM, and between 3-4 PM. This limited the amount of time people spent refreshing their email. We used to hate the policy but now I see that it makes sense. Email is supposed to be store and forward, not real time communication.

IT boxes need electricity but not petroleum products. We'll see electricity generated via alternative sources sooner rather than later - look for a resurgence in nuclear (the best choice IMO) as well as advances in wind, solar etc. If something needs petroleum products to be manufactured (e.g. tires), or operated (e.g. most cars) there's not much alternative except to invade the countries that have it.

  10. These guys are the real deal on New Racing Simulation Distances Itself From Gamers · · Score: 1

I recently had a business meeting with these guys and saw what they are doing. Their goal is to give real drivers more "track time" without the hassle or expense. They capture actual tracks using survey grade laser measurement equipment that is accurate to the millimeter. They analyze the road surface and build cracks, bumps and other surface anomolies into the siumulation. They have captured every tree and other environmental feature and render them in position - this was feedback they got from drivers who needed to see the trees in position to feel as if they were on the actual racetrack. I "drove" Laguna Seca in a stock car and it is not anything like a "video game." Their goal is to have you actually learn the track and be ready to race when you get there. While the simulation lacked the tactile feel, sounds, etc. of actual driving, I was pretty sure I was getting all the feedback I needed to familiarize myself to a specific track and car for when I arrive at the track for a race. My guess is early adopters were expecting a flashier experience and they needed to clearly state their mission to set the right expectations.

  15. You are in the wrong by refusing to help. on Can I Be Fired For Refusing To File a Patent? · · Score: 1

So, the boss obviously thinks the patent filing will increase the value of the IPO. They value your work. You work for this company and in return they pay you, and they own the IP you develop. The boss has to run the ship competently, and that means filing this patent. IMO if you refuse you should quit now and go find employment that is more to your liking, because the company is making the right decision and it is in everybody's best interest. Before you stomp off, consider this. If you refuse to help, you could make the IPO less valuable. I'll bet you have coworkers who have stock, and I'll be you do too. Do you have the right to refuse to help implement a good company decision that costs your coworkers money?

Hi, I can address this. Velodyne is the outlet for technology developed largely by Dave Hall. We already make servo and DSP controlled subs and sell tens of thousands per year. In the late 90s we got into robot fighting, which gave way to the Grand Challenge - all of which was really a hobby and a chance for some TV time. In the first Challenge we used stereo vision but found it inadequate, so we developed a 64 lidar sensor that was 2 feet in diameter. We finished 11th in the second race (bad steering motor), but everybody was so impressed with our lidar system we decided to commercialize it. We sold it to lots of teams, and 5 out of 6 finishers including the winners used it. The name of the sensor is the HDL-64E (HDL=High Definition Lidar) but everybody just calls it "the Velodyne." So here we are, with a name that covers both subwoofers and lidar sensors. There are worse problems in the world. Bruce Hall President, Velodyne
