Of course it would be funny as Hell if, while Berman was sitting on his hands killing Trek, Battlestar Galactica went and became the next major franchise. From what I've read, (Haven't seen any of the new BSG episodes) it looks like the new show may very well be head and shoulders above anything ever seen on Enterprise.

    Me and file sharing.

file sharing has dramatically increased the number of CDs I've bought. There are artists I would have never even looked at had I not downloaded their songs by mistake when grabbing other content.

I was deliberately avoiding the whole "Harry Potter" thing, as I saw it as a rip-off of Gaiman's "Books of Magic" series based on a similar premise. I ended up downloading the first book off the net out of curiosity, and after reading it, ended up buying the rest of the books, the first movie and even some of the food related branded products.

Of course, the flip side is I know people who are proud of never having bought another CD since they started downloading.

In the beginning, P2P had the potential to be a major advertising stream, like the Radio. Remember that most of the arguments being used against P2P were also used against the Radio and TV when they were starting up. It's gotten out of hand at this point, with the Internet being used for wholesale theft of IP instead of advertising of that same IP.

Ultimately, the refusal of the media companies to change and adapt to new technology has resulted in the technology developing in such a way as to deny the media companies most options for using it.

In my case, the Internet has served as more of a library than anything else. I'm not hoarding data, I'm listening to it or reading it once, and then discarding it. Functionally, and in it's impact on the people who would otherwise make money off it, it's no different than if I'd checked the CD and the books out of the library.

In the end, I dumped the data that wasn't legally free. I'm not going to give artists I would otherwise ignore a chance if I'm likely to get sued, fined or tossed in jail over it. After I uninstalled my last copies of Gnutella and eMule, I also stopped buying CDs and most "Mass Merket" books.

Their refusal to let me preview the content in a manner that is convenient for me has resulted in them losing all of the sales I would have represented. I find it ironic that the time during which I was downloading the most was when I was buying the most.

But then, I'm not one of the guys who, like a former web developer I used to work with, was downloading MP3s so he could burn CDs instead of buying them.

I'm not really sure we've evolved to "desire what's preferred by others". I think that's more a matter of socialization. We're clearly a species of "Followers" and "Leaders" but there's no way to tell how much of that is evolved and how much is the result of upbringing.

But you're right, the ones who've either evolved as, or been socialized as, followers will tend to follow the preferences of others, regardless of the evolutionary suitability of said mate. If it's evolved, then the people who bent to the will of their leaders were more likely to survive.

Actually, it all has to do with economics. The western economy is a culture of shame. "You're not good enough, so buy this product to BECOME good enough." The idea is to create expectations that are impossible to reach, so people are always striving and buying to get something they can never have.

Mind you, I don't for a moment think this is the result of any kind of organized conspiracy. This is the logical consequence of about a century and a half of advertising campaigns telling us ways we're "not good enough."

Toys like Barbie don't help matters much. I won't speculate about the motives behind the people who created the doll and it's proportions, but the end result has been a couple of generations of women growing up trying to look like that, and men growing up to expect women to look like that.

One of the replies to your post was from someone who finds Paris attractive. I'm sure there's a percentage of people who are just naturally hard wired for those preferences, but given the fact that Paris' body isn't really capable of supporting a pregnancy without medical aid, I doubt she matches the image of what we EVOLVED to prefer.

This advertising based image of the "ideal" is older than anyone alive today, and has become so ingrained that most people think its "normal" to find such an absurd image attractive, and even grow hostile towards those who imply otherwise.

Actually, given the photos I've seen of Paris, and the statistics I've read (Some VERY thin friends are having kids) her chances of having a child with birth defects are a few orders of magnitude greater than the average American's. Having so little weight probably makes it difficult to carry a fetus to term and provide it the nutrients it needs to develop properly.
