  1. Re:Everyone keeps forgetting. on E-Voting Companies Answer Critics With ... Spin · · Score: 1

Here is the Miami Herald's recap of the press-sponsored recounting of the 2000 Florida ballots. Feel free to read it.

There are two key terms to define:

"Undervotes" - these were ballots that were machine-recorded as having no vote cast for any pres/vp candidate

"Overvotes" - these were ballots that were machine-recorded as having a vote cast for more than 1 pair of pres/vp candidates

Here are some of the outcomes if you just recount undervotes - completely ignoring overvotes.

    4 county recount (I believe)
    1) count anything that looked like a punch: Bush wins by ~800 botes.
    2) count 2-corner missing chads, Bush wins by ~300.
    3) count only cleanly punched ballots - Gore wins by 3.

Lets say you include both undervotes and overvotes:

    Whole state recount:
    1) Count anything that looks like a punch(this race only): Gore wins by 600
    2) Count anything that looks like a punch (whole ballot has punches not push-throughs): Gore wins by 300
    3) Count 2-corner missing chads: Bush wins by 407
    4) Count only cleanly punched ballots: Bush wins by 152

So the way I see it - the press recount said "Bush won . . . or maybe Gore. It depends." It is ironic that applying Gore's preferred method of recounting, Bush would have won. But that does not change the outcome of their recount - a Gore victory was possible under a couple of different scenarios after a recount.

This isn't ancient history - this was 2 years ago. Heck, the recount info came out just last year. Why the hell can't people get this right?

So my point was, I read the original poster as saying "there is no way possible we could use Macs because they don't have parallel ports." I respectfully disagreed with him - saying that it was likely one could replace whatever item he had with an equivalent item connecting through a USB port.

I did not worry about financial considerations - that depends on the specific business, the cost of replacing any other infrastructure, etc, etc, etc.
I was responding to a technical question - CAN we do it, not WHY should we do it.

Your concern is focused on the WHY part of the question (ie, the system works, why spend the money to upgrade it?) A perfectly valid point. So the answer to the question "Should we replace our systems with Macs?" might have been,"No. we CAN do it (ie, technically possible), but it would be more expensive to do than it was worth."

    Does that make more sense?

At any rate, you can buy parallel port to USB and serial port to USB adaptors for $10-15 each, so it's not even like you'd have to throw everything else away.

You will be questioned on why you're joining. "I want to help my fellow man and don't mind living in really horribly crappy conditions for the next 27 months" is the correct answer. Anything else will likely raise some eyebrows.

You've got to have a useful skill or show some previous initiative on public service. Experience teaching is a plus. Knowledge of waste water treatment plants is a bigger plus. 6 months volunteer work at a tutoring center is a plus. Experience with Linux, C, C++ will be greated with a blank stare (and yes, I know about the program to wire Senegal).

You've got to be healthy. If you need dental work, it's got to be done before you leave. This can get expensive if you've been putting things off because of lack of insurance. If you're on prescription meds, the number of locations they can send you goes way down (so the length of time you'll wait to get assigned goes way up). If you've been depressed/ever seen a mental health professional (likely if you're suffering through bouts of unemployment) it gets even stickier.

You've really got to not mind living in crappy conditions. I want to emphasize that.

    That is all.

Textbook sales are another good example of the professor and business. When the prefessor, or department, can dictate the purchase of thousands of dollars in books, you can be certain that there is a great deal of schmoozing going along with the sale.

It goes without saying that this isn't always the case. An example:

The "classic" textbook for a particular course in my department (which, it so happens, was written by 3 professors in the department), is not always used to teach the class. If whomever is teaching the class that semester decides they want to emphasize a particular area which is covered better by a different book, they use a different book. This directly takes money out of their pocket, but so be it.

I think they also do it because it lets them approach the material from a different perspective, which gave them ideas for the next edition of their own book.
