  1. Oh, well. . . on Slashdot Updates · · Score: 0

Could you tell me the new ad sizes and addresses so I could add them to my proxy filters?

  2. The Liscense is Liscensed! on Unsafe At Any Runlevel · · Score: 1

Anybody notice the irony in having a restrictive terms of use for the liscence? You can't put the liscense on a computer network. How do you follow it if you can't even distribute the liscense?

  3. Will slashdot be sued? on Who Owns Your Culture? · · Score: 1

Apparently, the linux community, in a move to protect their culture, has decided to sue slashdot.org for their use of words such as "linux," "slashdot," and "Andover." No comment on violations of the GPL.

  4. What about other means of cheating? on Asus Dropping See Through Drivers · · Score: 1

If people cannot use special video drivers, what about using memory modifiers and proxies to help you win a multiplayer game? I haven't seen any large outcry about a proxy for Quake that helps you aim. General purpose memory modifiers also work well for cheating, but those can be compensated for by checking on the other end. I have yet to see a game that has this checking, however.

  5. Read the plain text. on XBox Screenshot Flim-Flammery? · · Score: 1

I opened the new screenshots straight from Microsoft here in a text editor and found "Photoshop 3.0," "File written by Adobe Photoshop 5.0," and "Adobe" in the first few lines. Have they really cleaned up their act? Why don't they distribute the "screenshots" in .PSD format?

  6. Re:This removes the mystery of nature. on "Mirror cells" May Be Key To Communication · · Score: 1

"The scientists are perpretrating a myth, and a dangerous one at that." Given you are obviously not a scientist, the statement equally applies to you. We know the brain is a bunch of neurons. You're just afraid to think of yourself in that way. Maybe your mirror neurons have failed to produce logic as a reason for others. Are you saying that I could destroy all of your neurons and you would still feel (religious beliefs of an after life are irrelevant).

  7. Suspiciously in the TOS on Humorously Bad Web Hosting Policies · · Score: 2

From section III of the TOS: "5. Check the spelling of usage. Notice how this protects the charges. I've never seen Telnet or SSH take up more than 1 kbps, unless port forwarding is on. Anyhow, how do they calculate bandwith usage? Do they use usage statistics?

I normally browse with no cookies set (except slashdot and e-mail) and when I clicked the link, it gave me an "Incorrect Access Permission" page. I personally don't like the idea of forcing people to accept cookies for marketing data.

  12. Has anyone looked at the stills? on Trailer For First Person Shooter Documentary · · Score: 1

If you look at the stills page, there are a lot of Gateway boxes and signs in the background. Makes me wonder if and why Gateway would sponsor Frag.

  14. Does anybody read HNN? on Convicted Hackers Snubbed by Security Firms? · · Score: 1

Hacker News (operated by @stake) had a story on this yesterday. Interesting point: the government will higher criminals, but the security industry won't. Hacker News also points out that the article implies that anyone who has used a handle (Do slashdot IDs count?) must be a gray hat hacker.

  15. Grammar on Judge OKs Class-Action Suit Against Microsoft · · Score: 1

Look at the phrase "Has it's monopolistic practices harmed Calif consumers." Notice specifically "it's." "it's" is a contraction for it is, which makes no sense in the sentence. The correct word is "its" which is the possessive form of it. I'm not going to complain about "Calif", although I probably should.

Anybody know what Gateway has to do with anything? Gateway serves newbies, the last people that would change operating systems, even if that change was from a text terminal to a GUI. I followed the news link and all that gave was a list of Gateway related news.
