You're seriously comparing the car industry to the video game industry and then asking him if he's an idiot??
Why not compare gaming to other entertainment industries like the movie business which happens to be having it's best year ever...
Questioning the state of console gaming is fair considering that the movie industry is having its best year ever, recession be damned. People are still willing to pay for entertainment, so something is up. There are a lot of consoles out there, and most of the games just flat out suck (especially when you take the price into consideration). Gaming has also become an innovation-free zone.
I hate to tell you this but there are no such things as "inherent rights". Inherent rights are as real as fairies, dragons, and Elvis sightings. For there to be "inherent rights", it would have to be somehow granted by Mother Nature, and Mother Nature frankly doesn't give a flying shit about your sense of what's acceptable. Any rights you have are granted to you via your government (generally via some nicely worded document) whether you like it or not. Even then, they are only good to the degree they are enforced.
True. EQ was totally brutal but when my guild accomplished something there was real elation there. I never felt anything close to that in WoW. I will say that I never like multi-hour corpse runs cuz the server dropped half your clerics in the middle of a raid but I guess that contributed to the feeling when you were victorious. It's sad to here they nerfed it.
You're a fucking moron. Listen to what he said, not what you wanted him to say. He did, in fact, push to get it funded and yes, it wouldn't be here if he hadn't. At no point in time did he ever say he invented the internet. What's more funny is all the blathering conservative morons on youtube jumping on his case for saying something he never said after watching a 1.5 minute fucking video. Just shows you that the education system in this country is worthless, or maybe it's just that conservatives have so succumbed to group-think now, they will believe anything regardless of evidence right in front of their face.
I find it truly sad that the anonymous faggot above gets modded up insightful while I'm modded down flamebait. Truly, truly sad. The moderators should shoot themselves in the head because they are wastes of existence.
Please show me the quote where he claims to have invented the internet. Seriously, just one quote form a legitimate news source. One teeny, tiny, little quote. Otherwise, stfu.
Don't hide behind the DOM. JavaScript sucks because it's designed to be non-maintainable. To be fair, it was designed back in the day when JavaScript functions were just small little chunks sprinkled around here and there to do simple things. Now it's used for far more than it was ever designed to handle and it flat out sucks major balls. I can't think of a language that's less maintainable than JavaScript except for maybe MSBASIC but that may not be fair to MSBASIC. Seriously, it's truly atrocious and should be replaced ASAP with a real language. Like most JavaScript fans, I think you confuse the bells and whistles with quality while completely ignoring what's bad about it. I have yet to meet a developer that I respect that has an overall positive attitude about JavaScript.
"By then.NET will have had cryptographically verified side-by-side deployment of code for well over a decade."
And nobody in the Java community cares. Somehow we manage to survive without it. In fact, I've never ever heard from any Java developer bemoaning the fact that Java doesn't have "cryptographically verified side-by-side deployment of code". Nor have I ever had an issue that made me even think I need that I might need it. So obviously it's only important in your mind.
Oh I fully understand why they made the choices they made. In their place, I would undoubtedly have made the same choice. But it's still choosing money over environment.
Not that simple. Ask the average person in Shanghai to choose between their job and clean air and see how that goes. Ok, that's a straw-man.:) But seriously, you don't honestly believe that none of the rich people who run Shanghai actually live there? I think people make a lot of assumptions based on their own personal notions about these things.
"Your first paragraph seems to indicate that there are those who would actually choose smog over clean air."
Actually, there are. There are people who would choose money over clean air any day of the week. All of China has done it for starters. The fact that you find it hard to imagine doesn't make his argument a straw-man.
Personally, I don't really care that much since I have no children to pass the planet on to. So I'm all for saying fuck the planet and exploit the resources (including plants, wildlife, etc.) until there's nothing left of it. The human race isn't immune from natural selection and there's no reason to think that it won't select itself out of existence. Regardless, the planet will always be here (for a few billion years anyway) so our disappearance isn't particularly significant.
I'm fortunate that there are just enough skeptics to prevent any serious environmental change from occurring in my lifetime, thus sparing me what is likely to be a hefty tax or fee increase of some form.
Well originally you were arguing that it was impossible to rebuild your code to be exactly the way it was in a previous release. Now you're talking about dependency resolution.
In any event OSGI and Java Modules (JSR 277) address the dependency management issue. I do agree it has sucked up till recently and I would also agree it has taken too long to get implemented. However, in practice this has had little impact for most since most Java jars are designed for backward compatibility so grabbing the latest one is safe but one exception is with the xerces libraries which are pretty notorious for causing issues if you don't have your shit straight. I've been doing Java since 1.1 and the only time this has been an issue is with xerces.
I still don't see any wet dreams on the horizon though.
I can version a repo if I want to. Again, what special magic does Microsoft have? As for repeatable, isolated, etc...it's called a build script which you can execute outside of an IDE, on the command line. As for checking in the JDK, I can but I don't need to because I can retrieve any version I want at will.
As for Jar hell issue...most sources of open source jars also provide hashes to verify you've got the right jar. It's not rocket science. Granted, not everyone verifies these hashes, but that's not a Java issue.
Java does have deficiencies but you have failed to name any of them. Congrats! I have no problem discussing Java's deficiencies because I also have no problem being one of its harshest critics. Like I said before, it's not my language of choice -- it's the language I put food on the table with.
Finally, where did I rip on Microsoft? I certainly can, but I challenge you to find it anywhere in this thread. The only zealot here is you.
I'm afraid you know very little about Java development. Perhaps you just worked with incompetent developers but I haven't worked on a Java project in many years that works even remotely as you describe it.
Any company using Maven that's got any sense at all uses local repos so what you're talking about just can't happen short of your repo getting corrupted.
For companies using ant, we check in all our jar dependencies. This is by far the most common thing I see as a consultant. I've never had any difficulty building old versions of code.
Your dislike of Java appears to taint your understanding of how it's actually developed. There are certainly retarded ways to manage your code and dependencies but they aren't a Java or tooling issue since there are plenty of tools to deal with these issues.
In any event, you cannot claim the high ground by stating you code C++, which is a disaster of a language. In any just world, Stroustrup would be shot for creating it. Python is actually pretty sweet.
Finally, feel free to rip on Java. It's not my preferred language but it is what I make my living on.
I have no idea what you're talking about or how it relates to my question. I was asking a question of a guy who works on Microsoft products, so I'm having difficulty figuring out why you're talking about OSX. Yes, I realize that Microsoft makes Mac software as well but that's not what the discussion is about.
Once again, I ask what wet dream I'm missing out on as a Java developer that all these developers at Microsoft seem to have?
Actually it's a fair question because you don't generally find internet kiosks in the US (or internet cafes for that matter). It's just assumed that anyone who cares about internet, has it. What you do find is widespread wifi access.
Yes, clearly it's all bullshit. We all know the videos of the glaciers melting is all done on a soundstage in Hollywood somewhere (probably funded by Al Gore and his commie-loving liberal wacko buddies).
And all the temperature sensors in the oceans indicating warming were all put near underwater volcanic vents.
And the increased strength and duration of hurricanes over the last 30 years is actually a plot by Al Queda.
The problem with dipshits like you is that you try to find one little kink in the armor and make that the center point of your whole argument while simultaneously ignoring all the other evidence that exists, even the evidence that's blatantly fucking obvious with your own eyes. The reason? Political affiliation. You're a conservative and to agree with something promoted by a democrat makes you cringe. Your ideologies blind you to reality. I wish this were an isolated occurrence but unfortunately it is oh so common that it's depressing. Reason has no place on this earth.
lol...well done.

Along the same lines, I highly recommend "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. It's fiction but educational.
You're a fucking moron. Listen to what he said, not what you wanted him to say. He did, in fact, push to get it funded and yes, it wouldn't be here if he hadn't. You are the biggest douche I've ever seen on /. and that's saying something. Congrats. I hope you get anally raped, hard.
No, it's not ok at all. It's the fucking religious dipshits who keep breasts from OTA television.

A difficult choice or a short-sighted choice is still a choice.

You're right. I plan to as soon as my dog passes away.
