I agree unless they will let me write iPhone apps in Ruby. I'm not a Ruby fanboi by any stretch of the imagination but Objective C sucks balls. I passionately despise it and their IDE for it is even worse than the language. Using a language that other people use opens the possibility of using non-Apple tools (which lets face it, suck). For all of Apple's efforts to make nice consumer devices, they don't give a rat fuck about developers and their tools. Xcode is lightyears behind the equivalent tools for Java, Ruby or Groovy. Seriously, it's from the dark ages of programming. The code editors I used 10 years ago (like SlickEdit) were better than Xcode is today. Even if it were brought into this millenium, Objective C is still a fucking joke of a language.
I would also suggest that any new graduate be prepared to do a lot of after hours studying to bone up on whatever frameworks, architectures, and tools your company is using. Your first couple of years of work in the corporate world should involve well over the 40 hours you're required to spend in the office (or whatever the norm is in the UK). Think of yourself as a sponge. I know this sucks because you might be a bit tired of all the studying from your college work but you'll be glad you did and so will your employer. You never stop learning in this profession but the initial load is usually pretty intense so brace for it.
One final bit of advice... Do not worry about compensation at all. The best thing you can do is to find a place that has great mentors and a great environment. You want to come away from your interview with the impression that these people know what they are doing. Most developers are defined by their early experience and if it sucks then they tend to suck through their career (at least that's what I typically see in my many years in this business). Once you get good, the money will come later (trust me).
Good luck to you and welcome to the wonderful world of bit twiddling!
The difference is that I have at least a little control over the asshole deciding what heaven (if any) I should be getting into.
People are under some kind of illusion that everything the government does is bad whereas corporate america is very competent and tends to do the right thing. How woefully naive that is. Just remember that it was the investment banks that convinced congress to just "trust them" so that they would approve the existence of credit default swaps. After all, they just know what they're doing and they couldn't possibly do something as stupid as destroy the world economy...
All entities are run by people. People fuck up. Sometimes very very badly. Government does not hold a monopoly on fucking up.
Fair enough, but you don't have much choice now. Your employer dictates your policy. Of course, you may purchase your own outside of your employer but nobody does that because it's too expensive. I'm self employed so I get vastly more freedom than most but even still my choices are very limited due to the cost.
Furthermore, if your employer uses an HMO, you have almost no freedom whatsoever. You have coverage as dictated by the HMO and what they are willing to pay for. They are notorious for denying all claims that aren't explicitly covered by the policy. With socialized medicine, it's the government making the decision. At least they aren't motivated by what their quarterly financial report is going to look like.
For the record, I don't really like the idea of socialized medicine. I just can't think of a better way to deal with the problem.
Sorry but you are massively uninformed. There are different kinds of health insurance just like there's different kinds of auto and disability insurance. What you are talking about is a "major medical" policy that only kicks in when your costs exceed ~$2k. This is the exact kind of policy I have. Why do I have this kind of policy? Because to get a policy that starts at $0 would cost me over a $1k a month. So, these policies already exist and they are already VERY common. The fact that you and the parent poster don't know about them is utterly fucking shocking to me. Even with major medical, I still have to pay over $200 a month for health insurance just for myself (non-smoker, non-obese).
The bottom line is that the cost of health care has skyrocketed compared to average income. It becomes less and less affordable and is becoming a greater and greater burden on the economy. In fact, the idiots that perpetuate the system we have today are driving us into socialized medicine (their worst fear) just because there will be no other way to deal with the costs. Frankly, I can't wait just so I can laugh my fucking ass off. Most doctors fucking suck anyway. Like everything else, 90% of them are worthless. Too bad you don't have time to shop around while you're in the middle of a heart attack.
"After all, if the government was or is so efficient at providing health care then why not have them provide other things too like cars, vacations, computers, designer clothing, and everything else that people want."
You must be fucking kidding me. It would be impossible for even the government to be less efficient than what we have today. Socialized systems in other western countries are far more efficient. We spend TWICE what England and Canada do per capita on health care.
Seriously, you need to actually READ about this stuff before you spout your mouth off. You have no idea what you're talking about.
You assert it was easily scratched yet you do not know how it was scratched. If you don't know how it was scratched, then how can you assert it was easily done? You didn't properly protect the device so I don't see how it's Amazon's fault. You should get the extended warranty so that they will fix it or quit whining. Either way, I don't care.
Clarification, the above review was for the Windows version. On the Mac, the startup and scrolling problem doesn't exist. It's still a huge memory hog though.
I've installed Safari 4 and while it seems slightly faster than Firefox 3, it's only very slightly. In some ways it's far slower. It starts significantly slower, and scrolling up and down is also much slower. So, there may be some improvements but it definitely comes with some costs. It's also a big memory hog. Perhaps they will eliminate these issues before it goes gold.
That said, I'm LOVING the new CSS 3 web fonts! Looks awesome!
Regardless, the stat is still meaningless. I have flash installed but I use NoScript to block all of it. I only have it to occasionally watch YouTube vids. I refuse to go to flash sites because they are 95% dogshit. I'm not exaggerating for effect...I honestly feel that way about flash sites. So, just because flash is installed doesn't mean a whole lot if a user blocks the vast majority of it.
Sorry but there's siply no comparison between using a PDA to read a book and a real ebook reader like the kindle. eInk is far superior to a backlit LCD screen not to mention the fact that the Kindle has numerous features designed specifically to support and enhance book reading that you won't get quite so easily with a PDA.
You've been going on and on about how much better Vista is for 3D over OS X, XP, and Linux and it all sounds great. There's just one problem with all of it...Vista runs games slower than XP. So I guess all that cool new shit in Vista is pointless because XP still kicks its ass in 3D rendering. Maybe I can't run 3 games at the same time in XP but who gives a shit...I can only play one at a time anyway.
Let me know when vista catches up to XP in 3D performance and then come back and impress me with all the new tech. Until then, it's all bullshit.
I don't think it has much to do with iTMS. I have yet to see an application (and I've looked at quite a few now) that I would be willing to pay $5+. There's simply nothing important or significant enough that I can run on the iPhone that's worth that much. Before you get any ideas about me being a cheap bastard, I spend at least $1000 on software every year. So $5 for an app is nothing for me. But lets face it, if it's on the iPhone it's a toy. It might be neat and all but it's just never gonna be worth a lot to a majority of people. That said, I'm looking forward to the day when I do see an app that is worth $5+. I'm just not holding my breath.
Are you sure America didn't fuck it up somehow? I mean, I'm gonna start thinking this isn't/. unless the US isn't somehow responsible for all the fucked up shit on the planet.
You're making the assumption that it was rejected because they don't believe the intent was emotional distress. The logs of their chats clearly show otherwise. In fact, they even suggested to Megan the world would be better off if she didn't exist. Clearly emotional intent was intended. They likely rejected those charges for other reasons.
Whoopie shit...you hear about the troller 3 hours earlier on the BBC. It's frequently the other way around.
As for the Mumbai situation, I actually heard a lot more about French hostages on CNN than I did Americans. I just assumed it was because that's all the information they had. That aside, of course news affecting Americans is more newsworthy to an American audience. So what?
Finally, this whole issue of journalistic bias makes me laugh. People argue about this as if there's the possibility that a news source can be unbiased. I hate to inform you all that there's no such thing as an unbiased news source and that includes the BBC (and I read their site frequently). They are all biased because ALL HUMANS ARE BIASED. It's not possible to not be biased. The only thing that changes is how much bias there is and there's no absolute way to measure that because it's relative to the observer.
It's not available. The military has had regulations preventing the placement of confidential information on publicly accessible networks for over 20 years (which is back when I was in the Air Force). I'll leave it to the amazingly brilliant posters of/. to figure out why they might make such statements...
Yes, I live in the US but I've traveled to many countries. I understand what you're saying about how being immersed in it on a day to day basis could color my opinion. However, I spent six months in England so it's safe to say I was fairly immersed there too. I met plenty of idiots in England but I feel that we're beating them on quantity and possibly the quality of their idiots too.
I can't speak for Japan since I've never even been there but, as I understand it, their xenophobic tendencies are less about stupidity and more about racism and cultural programming. Group-think occurs in every country. The average American thinks they live in the greatest country in the world but most of them couldn't valid arguments why. Most have very little experience in other countries to make such an assertion but brainwashing has managed to convince everyone it's true.
re:ADD I find it extremely hard to believe that ADD had anything whatsoever to do with making a voyage to the new world. There are people who have a natural need to explore and learn new things and they are more likely to be adrenalin junkies than ADD'ers (although, those conditions aren't necessarily mutually exclusive).
While every country has plenty of stupid people, I am starting to believe that my beloved America has more than most. I don't think it was always this way but I think our education system has declined to the point that we're left with a bunch of thoughtless ADD'ers who can't think of anything but themselves. Just ask some younger people anything about history, geography, and forget math... you might be surprised how little they know. Our schools don't teach kids how to think, at least not critically and it's fucking up our country (and the world).
Because Z doesn't get used enough. It's only fair.

"Oh and the government is capable of motivations far more devious than profit."
ROFLMAO...who do you think controls the government??

connectingsingles.com is also a 100% free dating site (it's funded with google ads).
Sorry to disappoint America bashers but we had nothing to do with this. Nice try though.
I can't blame you for leaving, but where did you move to that you don't have this problem?
It would have to be a hand-held (unless he owns his own plane), and there are no 100W hand-helds (try 5W).
