And outside of dimwitted tech reporters who work for Ziff-Davis and USA Today....Who really cares all that much about "winning" over "average" users anymore? This is the mistake that sank the Atari ST and Amiga and quite frankly is one that should be avoided at all costs. Linux and the BSD's are doing just fine without chasing after "Joe Six-pac" and his brood. If they want to take the time and effort to learn Linux or any other OS, fine. But we shouldn't bend over backwards for them. The companies who make and sell those shitty Winmodems should be recieving all the abuse they are getting from their customers over manufacturing and selling such a shitty product. You're the idiot. What you've said is utter rubbish. Most of the old DOS games that ran under dos on the 486's still beat the crap out of their counterparts running under Win95/98 that need a P2 300mhz machine to eek out the same performance a 486 66mhz machine got you.
And your argument is a stupid one. It's still going to take one hell of a long time to download the movie, and that's assuming perfect conditions. Throw in the real-world status of the typical cable modem connection to the internet and you still got something that not really workable in the real world.

You're an idoit and a techno-snob. Strange isn't it how the two seem to go hand-in-hand. Go to Wal-mart and see just how fast a shipment of those $79.00 4-head stereo VCR's vanish from the sales floor. Movies released on VHS tapes aren't going to disapear anytime soon, no matter how losers like yourself scream, moan and bitch about it.

There's another Y2k-type problem out there and it has to do with data stored on older computers and file formats/filesystems. Linux supports this a hell of a lot better than Windows does.

Get over yourself. Why would someone buying a PlayStation II for their kids (yeah, right) to play the games they'll buy at K-mart or Wal-mart even care about a video port compatible with a VGA standard? It's not like they're going to go out and buy a SVGA monitor if they don't already own one. You PC gamers can't stand the thought that the PC gaming market with it's totally absurd hardware/software requirements is going to get creamed by the PlayStation II and other Consoles can you?

Bleh.
What are you ranting about? I find actually using my Iomega external parallel port drive easier under Linux than it is under Windows. Let's see you put more than one partition on a Zip diskette formatted for use with Windows. I know guys who've installed two or more seperate Linux-formatted partitions on the same Zip disk, though this something I've never done myself. I like how linux treats the Zip drive as a normal drive, you can format it,eject the disk from the drive, ect using the normal linux comands.
> Here are a few related questions: >1. Why focus on Linux over all free Unix (aka freenix) in general?
Because BSD users like yourself tend to sit on your ass and want other people to do your work for you. That's why Linux has the mindshare over BSD because the Linux users for the most part actually got up and busted their ass for what they believed in. This DVD issue is a perfect example of this. Does anyone really doubt that if a bunch of BSD types had gotten the letters from the DVD lawyers, they wouldn't have tucked their tails bettween their legs and whimpered like a whipped dog?

Crap. Matrix filiming sucked because the movie sucked. Want to see a really good and fun movie with great effects? Go to Blockbuster and rent either "A Chinese Ghost Story" or "Wing Chun". Both these movies make the Matrix look like the lame bullshit that it is.

Maybe because myself and one hell of a lot of other people don't *WANT* to use credit/debit cards? Or have *ZERO* interest in using or being a part of online banking money transfers? Every credit card application I get goes straight into the round file after being ripped into tenny-tiny pieces, especially those "pre-approved" scam cards I keep getting from my bank and other places.
