    An orbital craft can be used to deliver nukes. Hmm.... Are we going to let this reach the public domain any time soon? I think not. I mean, we don't like North Korea having such things that can hit other countries, much less being capable of going around the world.

    Do you even know that SSO didn't and cannot reach orbit? And that it is much harder to reach orbit because of escape velocity and the like?

    And that NASA enabled this by releasing all the information onto the public domain?

    I don't understand why everyone dumps on Scaled Composites. I mean, they only spent $20-$30 million, but this was because scientists under NASA had already done a lot of the enabling R & D and put that into the public domain.

    Furthermore, this is a far cry from orbit. This was just lifting something into the sky. (Potential energy, which is equal to mass * grav. constant * height.) To reach orbit, you have to hit a really high rate of speed, which is kinetic energe: .5 * mass * velocity squared. V^2 is a really large number.

    So Scaled Composites was a great achievement, but it stood on the backs of giants. It's rocket will not scale to orbit, either, nor would that craft survive orbital reentry.

    Statistical sampling of lots would reduce this. You could cheat as a supplier, but the cost/benefit analysis would be unfavorable.

    This is what open-source needs: a quick and convenient upgrade/patch system. I went to the system settings and ten seconds later, my Firefox was patched.

    I worked in a research lab with an ionized water source. I drank a lot of the water, thinking I was pulling a great stunt. Absolutely pure water sucks. It has no taste, and it burns just a little because it is so pure that the osmosis does weird things.

    The parent post makes a lot of sense. The article doesn't say the advantages of the format, as over, uh, PNG. It doesn't say what is so special about it and whether we have to pay to use it and thus keep it out of legitimate OSS. (LAME is the best example of category, since it deals with MP3, it's binaries cannot be included in distros that follow the law.)

    I dont' know why the parent post got knocked down so much. Perhaps the mods are trying to get him a coveted +5 Troll?

    Oh, well. I'm going to get modded down now, aren't I?

    You can sell mods for a dollar. Seriously. Most flamers will not want to do this, because it will make them trackable. Someone who really wants to mod, who is willing to go through the credit card process is someone worth believing. Then you can meta-mod by other, established mods. And if there is an evil mod, well, at least he's paying ya. Heh.

    You can say it's cheaper because you can get an X-Box used, etc., but you can say the same for hardware. This is especially true about the case, cd-rom, floppy, screen, fans, keyboard, mouse, hard drive, etc. People just need to buy an Athlon 64, a graphics card, a motherboard, and RAM.

    There is a reason Gaim devs hate Gentoo users. The users mess with all the settings instead of compiling the source "straight". They put all these compile flags and stuff trying to optimize the hell out of an instant messenging client. Then they bitch and complain to the devs about how the software sucks.

    This is just to illustrate both sides. I used to use Gentoo and I was annoyed by my fellow users.

    Courts normally shouldn't interpret the law as unconstitutional unless it's hands are forced. The court could have interpreted the law as being legal as long as it complies with copyright law. For example, if the sale violates the copyright of the artist, then the law is valid.

    Hotmail has slow service, and it's interface still has problems. However, it works for me while Gmail does not.

    I mean this in a literal fashion. I use Firefox 1.0PR with Kerio Personal Firewall 4.1.0 and Gmail does not work. The code for the easy interface apparently is really complicated and just doesn't work. It doesn't work in IE, either.

    Hmm... Anyone else see this problem? Since Gmail is experimental, google searching has been fruitless.

    OK, not under its own power. But it had to be flown, right? So that's how.


    The Buran, unlike the US space shuttle, has jet engines that allows for powered flight in the atmosphere. This also allows it to land automagically with no persons on board. In fact, this was done in the first and only space flight of the Buran.

    Remember Google-hacks at http://johnny.ihackstuff.com/? Basically, since Google effectively snoops millions of servers, you can use this information to break into servers and get information. Having an internal feature that connects broken links to real pages may be orders of magnitudes worse. What if I imaginatively "linked" to a made-up URL to see what's on your servers? This could be bad news if it's effectively done.

    It is independent of all MS libraries. The recent JPEG vulnerability in Firefox is a separate issue. Firefox is OSS, and thus cannot use closed-source libraries such as the MS one in trouble.
