    The average Chinese young person has never heard of Tiananmen Square (or at least, they've never heard of the protests). Personally, I have a problem with that.

    Having said that, IIRC most copyright laws including the DMCA make exemptions for "archival or backup purposes", which a mix-cd is.

    How will humanity progress without the geniuses? How will we reach for the stars (and colonize their planets)? You need geniuses if you want to progress at a remotely reasonable rate (just look at quantum mechanics for an example of rapid progression spurred by geniuses, keeping in mind that no work is wasted).

    On my computer, at least, I think he meant "man filesystems" (plural) since man filesystem is about the signaling event, which isn't very helpful at all.

    Just because people regularly bash the company for dumb reasons doesn't mean that every time someone bashes the company it's for a dumb reason.

    ObTopic: Just wipe all the OSXen and replace them with Ubuntu 10.04. Install AWN and Compiz, configure keybindings and themes, and no one will know the difference. Then you can use ext4.

    No, they left private beta. They're still beta IIRC, it's just that you don't need an invite any more. Wave is actually pretty fragile; it's not coming out of beta for a while.

    I thought presidential elections are technically run on a state-by-state basis? That is, each state is required to select some electors for the electoral college, and they all happen to use the first-past-the-post system, but they don't actually have to do that. If this is correct, nothing at the federal level needs to happen to fix the presidential elections; instead each state needs to change.

    There's no such thing as a physical crowd on the internet, and the article is about the internet, so why is any of that relevant? When people type in ALL CAPS they tend to get ignored, not just on /. but practically everywhere, so shouting doesn't seem to "work" here.

    What do you mean "man hours"? Transcoding can be scripted and automated with ffmpeg. You could probably produce the requisite HTML5 with Perl. No humans are involved in day-to-day operations of such a system, so where are the "man hours" you complain about?
