The AC has a valid point, just saying it works for me is not helpful and definitely not +4 Insightful. Ubuntu 12.10 has some serious problems with some Nvidia cards.
I agree with your modding comments, but this is slashdot... Meta mods to the rescue?
Why is it bigotry to say that homosexuality should be stamped out, yet not bigotry to say religion should be stamped out?
Because: "Those Who Can Make You Believe Absurdities Can Make You Commit Atrocities". However don't be under the mistaken belief that it is an attack on religion, it is not. It is an attack on anything that is based on tradition, faith and revelation, as it happens religions are just a large target.
Dawkins may or may not be a bigot, however I can't agree that he is based on labelling religious believers delusional. For one, it is a conclusion that is based upon evidence, not obstinately held. Secondly I don't see how that comment shows Dawkins treating the religious with hatred and intolerance.
Delusion is commonly used to describe belief in anything without evidence. The anecdote you linked to perfectly fits this definition. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
Logical conclusion? That argument is actually a logical falacy. See Russell's teapot. Your ancedote shows that more investigation is required as currently the workings of the brain are not fully understood. Using a god of the gaps argument is not very convincing or a reasonable position to take.
Bigotry "a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices".
delusion: something that is falsely or delusively believed or propagated
Calling religious believers delusional is accurate, not bigotry. If presented with evidence to the contrary then if Mr Dawkins still called religious believers delusional then I would agree with the bigot tag.
Seems like you have gone off the scale with Stalin. Not going to bother...
To be honest, having your graphics card lag a year behind is perfectly acceptable unless you absolutely need to play the latest games on top settings (or do heavy CAD, I guess, but I think that market operates differently from the consumer market I know so I can't comment on it).
I'm currently using a Geforce 8800 GTS. Yes, 8800. From 2007. It still does modern games reasonably well and if it wasn't so RAM-starved I'd keep using it for another year. When I'll upgrade my gaming rig at the end of the month I'll put in a card with a six times the RAM, which should last for another four to five years.
Yes, a videophile would argue that playing on anything less than 2560x1440 with 16xAA and all setting maxed out is an insult to human eyes but the opinion of any -phile only vaguely applies to normal users. I'm perfectly fine with "mere" 2xAA at 1080p; the gameplay is more important than the graphics anyway. (Case in point: Due to RAM starvation I play Borderlands 2 with fairly bad texture quality but the fact that I can't read Roland's Facebook post doesn't keep me from enjoying the game.)
I disagree, unless we have a different opnion on what is a modern game. I can't any recent games my old pc with an 8800gtx with a "reasonable" frame rate @1080p.
Nice try but, once you have accepted the existance of an omnipotent being it is no longer possible to prove an event hasn't occured. For example, god cleaned up after the flood so that is why no traces of a worldwide flood exist anymore.
Coffee consumption can lead to a greater risk of developing exfoliation glaucoma, the primary cause of secondary glaucoma, all over the world.
The coffee is only a problem if you don't combine it with enough cigarettes, chocolate cake and bacon. Once you have the combination right the secondary glaucoma will not trouble you.
Australia has large urban sprawl and large commute distances and almost absent cycling infrastucture. Cycling in summer or winter (if you can handle it) mandates a shower after arriving at work. Wearing a helmet is crap but you can get used to it. But until there is enough housing density and infrastructure cycling is for the most part not pratical.
FTFY, Australia is a big place. There are plenty of places that have suitable infrastructure for cycling. The two biggest problems I have found with cycling is, the lack of secure parking and the lack of shower facilities.
What is the point of expensive bike paths when half your bike has been stolen while you have been working?
If 12 people with a degree in separation claim they saw that or anything else no matter how incredible it sound, then it is credible that something happened to make you all think you saw it. Usually, this is enough to convict someone of a crime as far as evidence goes- no matter how outlandish your claim might be.
I'm not sure why that seems like such a shock to you. But it is the way the world works.
I agree, but that does't make it credible that it was actually seeing the plates that caused them all to think they saw the plates. I can imagine it would be quite easy to get someone to say that they saw golden plates and write a testimony to that effect. The fact that the seeing the plates allows you to marry the hot 16yo next door and have a credible excuse to give your existing wife would have no bearing on my testimony, however it may affect others judgement.
I think we are in agreement. My issue was with the wording, "If you were brought up in a Muslim culture...". I feel that it distracts from the underlying problem of people not relying on their own judgement and being guided too heavily by their culture. However its a very circular argument as its likely that the culture and lack of education and censorship factors into the ability for an individual to reason and make decisions independant of their cultures traditions.

By default Ubuntu will use the open source video driver called Nouveau for your NVIDIA graphics card.
Usually you will see a notification and/or an icon in the top panel, reminding you that restricted drivers are available.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia
Going to be hard to spot that notification icon when the installer doesn't even work...
I'm happy it worked for you. It doesn't work for everyone... The gui installer didn't even work for me, failed at step 1.
You could not be more wrong.
Ubuntu will do it all with shiny pictures for you.
While I can't speak for the AC, his experience mirrors mine, ubuntu 12.10 with a nvidia 5950 ultra.
But the sender has lots of money and only pays once. While they're making new rules, they should require that the sender pays me too...
So far, not ONE format for storing entertainment content has lasted without eventually being made obsolete

Without indication one way or another, the only logical conclusion is agnosticism. However, many of us have had such an indication.

Holy books can drive the desire to read right out of a person.
In real terms, the Queen has less power than a broken toaster. The true power lies in the Palace of Westminster and Whitehall.
No, the true power lies with the people. Convincing the people to use that power is the tricky part...

Good luck with quitting!
Do you feel the same way about pedestrians and people who insist on getting in/out of baths without a helmet?

He was just following the example of the Prophet.
Looking at a magazine is outside your little closed world that you carry in your pocket.
I use an android phone.
Is there really anyone out there who doesn't read "f**cking" as "fucking"?
I read f*cking as fucking but f**cking is a bit more ambiguous.
The asterisk indicates there is zero or more of the preceding element.

Now look, once you have got past the virgin birth of a god to a mortal woman, all the other rumors will pale in comparison and not seem so crazy.

Reason, is the human capacity for making sense of things, for establishing and verifying facts, and changing or justifying practices, institutions, and beliefs based on new or existing information. You won't see much of that happening in an average church. Perhaps you have a different definition for Reason.
